Am I the only one who screams every time Macklin has the ball down low with nothing but oxygen molecules in between him and the rim and he stops to put the ball on the floor before going up?
All it does is give his defender time to get position and force Macklin to lay it up instead of throw it down.
It must be some sort of Mackey Sasser-esque tic, but Roy seems to have overcome it and if Vern is to be a quality backup big man, he needs to figure it out as well.
Drawing the foul is great for some guys. Vern needs to dunk that stuff.

One of my ongoing frustrations with Roy's play down low is how frequently he opts for a layup when he could just as easily slam the ball home. Since I really haven't seen the Hoyas play yet this season, if he's now regularly demonstrating power moves in such situations, I'm pleased with the change. He's still 7'2", right?

ok - i don't want to change the thread... but i once was frustrated with roy for doing the same... putting the ball on the floor rather then taking it straight to the hoop. if you can remember freshman roy and sophomore roy - this was a common occurrence... and usually followed by a turnover. layup or dunk - i really don't care - just put it up, not down. roy is much approved on this front, macklin should learn from him.

nothing but oxygen molecules in between him and the rim To be fair, there's also a lot of nitrogen, some argon, and some CO2 in the mix as well.

Destroya hit on a great point (".........but i once was frustrated with roy for doing the same... putting the ball on the floor rather then taking it straight to the hoop. if you can remember freshman roy and sophomore roy - this was a common occurrence... and usually followed by a turnover...........") that I'd like to highlight.
I'm sure there are many posters here who can remember other Hoya Big Men having the exact same issue. Alonzo may have been the biggest perpetrator of putting the ball on the floor, but other Hoyas with similar tendencies included: Sweetney, Harrington, White. Note that each of these guys started showing more strength in the paint (& less tendency to dribble) as his career went on. As with Roy, I fully expect Vernon to overcome this unnecessary aspect of his game, and I expect it soon.

I think you have the whole dunk/lay up thing wrong - the reason why the ball is brought down is to wind down to then explode up because he is looking for a dunk where he doesn't have one. That goes away 2 ways: 1) catching the ball on the move so that you can carry momentum to the hoop or 2) develop better around the basket finesse moves... he is already pretty good at 1), needs to work on 2) a lot (a nice up and under Vlade Divac style and a kid with his athleticism would be unstoppable)
The comparison with Roy is also a stretch as Roy had confidence and strength issues that led him to try and wind up by bringing the ball lower. Though confidence could be a small issue for Vernon, I highly doubt leg strength is.

Cool, big Vern came through in the ODU game and had some nice dunks, yes he needs to put them long arms and big hands in that paint also.
