However, I do have one question for any legal scholars out there...
Are NCAA teams allowed to hold raffles? That would constitute a lottery...right? So how would that be allowed?
Carnivales with Guess Your Weight booths? I guess the old Milk Bottle toss is out too...

CA, if I missed the point of the other posts, then you aren't even in the same universe as my point.
I explicitly said that I commend MEGAFAN for thinking creatively in trying to help the program. I explicitly said that the most important thing is that people send the donations in. I also explicitly said that this is probably not the only way to get people to donate. In my own words:
"There has to be a way to avoid the whole "Neuheisel" thing (as someone referred to it) and still get people to donate."
I''m sure there are plenty of ways to encourage people to send their bucks in to help the program. Like Cambridge said, we don't have the money or resources of other elite universities/athletic programs, so the number one priority is getting that money in to the school and the program. To repeat what I said probably three times already, there has to be a better way to do it. If someone comes up with one, I'm all for it. I never said this way the only way; so there were no words being put in anybody's mouth by me.
Looks like you just wanted to pile on because you disagree with other things I've posted. But unless you've been experiencing a post-exams hangover (which is a perfectly legitimate excuse), then re-read what I wrote. I'm not wrong in what I said. It's what you think I said, or meant to do, that you're saying is wrong. If I said it was a "stupid idea", as was already attributed to me by someone else, or if I said this was the only way to get people to donate, then fine, I'm wrong. But I didn't. So I'm not.
Georgetown encourages its students to engage in discussion and debate about all sorts of topics, and to do so in a civil manner with respect for the opposing viewpoints of the others involved in the discussion. Apparently this does not carry over to the internet message boards. I may be guilty of some unnecessary arguing in the past, but when its everybody-against-one, and I get called out, I'm going to defend myself. I'm not going to apologize, and I wouldn't expect anyone else to. I just hope that some people realize that in the end, we all want the program to succeed, and that accusing others of "raining on the parade" just because they have a different opinion is not productive, not sensible, and not right. I'm not interested in ruining anybody's fun. I'm also not interested in potentially getting Georgetown in trouble, either. The NCAA rules are very anal (even employees of the Athletic Department - including students - who have nothing to do with basketball can't participate in a tournament pool, for example), but they are the rules. You can either live with them, or don't play. I choose to live with them.

I reread your post and now realize that your point was the danger of the wrath of the NCAA in conducting such a pool. OK, so now we can all move forward. This was a point that I did not get in reading your other brief posts, so perhaps that is why I glossed over it.
We’re all making assumptions about each other that lead us nowhere. My mistake was that I did not understand in your previous posts why you were opposing this. You made it clear in your last one. However, to quote you exactly, you say, “Looks like you just wanted to pile on because you disagree with other things I've posted.” This is absolutely not the case. In at least one situation in the past, I’ve defended your viewpoint. The moment we start taking things from posts that are not written there, this forum for civil discussion can degrade into a flurry of allegations and personal attacks.
I agree that we should respect a wide variety of viewpoints in this message board, that’s what makes this board so great. However, I can respectfully disagree with you and have an opinion that you are wrong, isn’t that allowed? It seems that this pool idea is all but killed now, which is too bad because many on this board, myself included, thought it was a good idea. However, if we are sure that the NCAA bylaws prohibit something like this, then I guess that’s that. Like you said, I guess we’re just going to have to find another way.
