nice title...oxymoron in itself. ;D You beat me to the punch SFHoya99. I was gonna say something like: "Wow, I didn't know they were adding that kind of functionality to this message board. You mean that we can now add audio and post oral messages." I know, I'm a loser, but I can't help it. GO HOYAS!!!

I thought the Admin might pull this one because its title might be a little too, ahem, suggestive... explicit even...

These Oral Roberts posters clearly were not talking about me. . . Knowledgable? Respectful? What language is that? I'm not familiar with those words. oralroberts.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=1815&tid=44863142&sid=&style=2Eaglebackr: "I just checked out the Georgetown message boards, all ready to lay down with some heavy smackola.....AND I CAN'T DO IT!!! They were just too knowledgable about basketball and respectful of ORU. They know they probably have more talent than we do, but that they can't afford to look past us. There wasn't one single smarta** comment about Oral, or Richard, or 900-foot-Jesus, or anything!! WHERE'S THE FUN IN THAT?!? Seriously, it was refreshing." Mad Adder: "Agreed. I checked out their message board, and the posts regarding us are all about how they can't afford to overlook us, that we're a pretty good team." oruvoice: "My thoughts exactly. Seemed like a bunch of intelligent, polite, thoughtful fans. REFRESHING!"

They have a 900-foot Jesus?
Wow, that's a lot of Jesus.
And people were complaining at GU about the crosses in the classrooms!

Thats nice to hear, its so rare for a group of fans to be able to communicate intelligently and respectfully over a message board these days. I respect the Oral Roberts fans for those comments and I would like to thank goldeneagle for his contributions here so far.

I did some research on google, this might explain the 900 foot Jesus thing a little. 1977 Oral Roberts claimed that he received a vision, or revelation, from God. In the vision he claimed that God told him to build the City of Faith Medical Center. He also claimed that he saw a 900 foot tall Jesus, who said that the City of Faith would be successful. Four years later, in 1981, he opened the City of Faith. www.ondoctrine.com/10robero.htm

Apparently that refers to the vision that told Oral what to do.
I knew nothing about that. I did see online that apparently Oral plans to rule alongside God at the end of time? Did I see that right?

I guess you guys are pretty young. There was a time when Oral Roberts (the man, not the university) was on TV all the time. Before Jimmy Swaggart and the Bakers there was Oral Roberts. ORU did have a very good team in the late 70's, early 80's. I guess they came on hard times, but it seems as if they are bouncing back.

He followed up the 900-foot Jesus fundraiser with a vision in which God ordered him to raise $8 million in scholarship money in a year or God would "call him home." He said he had raised $3.5 million and begged his viewers to save his life by sending in the remaining $4.5 million. www.equip.org/free/DR170.htm

Have to say I'm kind of disappointed it isn't a literal 900-foot Jesus that they've erected on campus.
That would be kind of cool.

As for the fundraising scheme... I heard a pretty bad joke (apologise in advance to ORU folks out there).
Q. Did you hear that Oral Roberts died?
A. The check bounced

Nothing like a little googling to provide another...
The Pope, Billy Graham, and Oral Roberts died in a plane crash. They all went to the pearly gates together.
"Oh, this is terrible," said St. Peter. "Your rooms aren't ready. We can't take you in just yet and we can't send you back."
Then he got an idea. He picked up the phone, "Lucifer? St. Pete. I got these three guys up here, but we're not ready for them. Could you put them up for a couple of days? I'll owe you."
The Devil agreed.
Two days later...
"Pete, this is Lucifer. You gotta come get these three clowns. The Pope guy is forgiving everybody, Graham is saving everybody, and Oral Roberts raised enough money to buy air conditioning."

I've heard the Pope, Graham, Oral one, but the check bouncing one was funny.
No, there is no 900 foot Jesus as you have probably heard already. We do have a couple of hands with the fingers interlocked called the praying hands. It's probably about 30 feet high.
The City of Faith used to be the ORU med school. It was funded by expected giving, people pledging that they would give to the school regularly. All the sudden after the Jim Bakker/Jimmy Swaggart scandals, people started getting afraid that Oral was trying to take advantage of them as well. They stopped giving all the sudden, so the formerly funded City of Faith became the City of Debt, plunging ORU into $42 million in debt. Since then, the school has bounced back to about only $19 million in debt. However the building was leased out and the name was also sold to become the Citiplex Towers, a 60 floor building, the tallest in Oklahoma.
The school itself was only founded in 1963. We only joined the Mid-continent Conference in 1998, I believe. Our last NBA player was Haywoode Workman of the Indiana Pacers.

How the heck did you guys get out of debt? We have a similar issue with a bleeding hospital that's giving the school all sorts of money problems.

Aaaah! What happened to my great title for this thread? I mean that is the guy's first name... If we can't say "Oral" on this message board, what can we say? How about Penal Colony? I was at least hoping for a warning ;D

Haha, agreed. Oral must live on! Who doesn't love Oral?
If we were playing them at home, do you think it would be out of line to chant, OOO-RRRAALL, OOO-RRRAAAL!! ;D
