As posted in another thread below, I am organizing a great Hoya pool for the upcoming BE season. Participanst must try to predict how the Hoyas will fare throughout their entire BE Conference schedule.
As for tiebreakers, one idea would be to reward correct picks with a point, and then go to predictions of our final Be record as the first tiebreaker. A second tiebreaker could be a prediction of how the Hoyas fare in the Big East Tournament. We could also take estimates of our "final" regular season RPI, just in case, with the miraculous collective intellgience on this board, more than one participant nails the first two tiebreakers perfectly.
Let's say that we get 25 people together, each forking up $10 - that would be $250 to be donated to Hoya Hoop Club. Hoya basketball would benefit, as would the winner, for the donation would go entirely under his/her name, not only making them a proud Hoop Club member, but also making them eligible for special benefits awarded to members in the $250-500 range.
Say we get 50 people at $20 each - the winner would be responsible for donating $1000 to the club, and could subsequently reap the member benefits that come with that high contribution level.
Basically, it would be great if we could all agree on a fixed entry fee. Originally I suggested $10, but given the initial feedback, I think we will up the antee to $20.
Or how about: $20 for alumni (or 21/+ if not alumni) and $10 for current students (or participants under 21).
So far, we have 4 entries. I believe they are each for $20:
MEGAFAN CambridgeHoya YB SFO Hoya
Put your money where your mouth is and fork up a little cash in support of our team.
What do you say?
P.S. If our Hoyas exceed expectations and begin to gel at the right time, perhaps we could get really crazy, a la MEGAFANLAND, and take a portion of our collective donations and roll the dice on the Hoyas taking home the BET trophy. Imagine if we raised $600, gave $500 to the Hoop club in honor of the winner, and wagered $100 on a 10:1 Hoya underdog. We could then collect $1000 (pay ourselves back for the original $20 each) and proceed to donate the rest of the money to the Hoop Club. This is obviously too premature and I have got to settle down, but just thinking aloud.
GO HOYAS!!! BRING HOME A TROPHY FROM HAWAII!

I'd be in. Payment methodology? Paypal would be great.
Also, I would like to suggest that the payment to the HHC be delayed until July 1 so the new free member can actually reap rewards.

Yeah, I was thinking that if everyone made a payment to my PayPal account, I could then go online, and use my PayPal credit card on the Georgetown Website. I would simply charge the total and fill the form out under the full name of the winner.
I agree that ideally we should delay the donation until July 1st, but I guess we could leave that up to the discretion of the winner.
I don't think it is a problem, and obviously the winner could confirm the donation, but I hope people don't have reservations about depositing money into my personal PayPal account. We are all Hoyas, and of course, I have no problem disclosing my real identity (watch out for my Bourne Identity: MEGAFAN).
Other thoughts?
GO HOYAS!!!

10:1 dogs in the BET? I bet its waaaaay more than that. 25:1 perhaps? Not the point though.
I'm in, as Chinatown knows I can't resist a good gamble these days, and its for a great cause after all.
Moneybags HoyaSox over there should get in on this too.

I say we add a point system to account for margins...
For example:
1 point for calling the correct outcome, win or loss
10 points for correctly guessing the exact margin 8 points for guessing the margin give or take 1 point 6 points for guessing the margin give or take 2 points 5 points for guessing the margin give or take 3 points 4 points for guessing the margin give or take 4 points 2 points for guessing the margin give or take 5 points
Therefor, for example I called the Penn St game as a 70-58 victory for the Hoyas...12 point margin. The result was a 66-53 victory...13 point margin. In this scenario, I would get 1 point for the victory and 8 points for calling the margin within one. So 9 points for the game total.
This should ensure that there won't be a tie and adds a little spice to the end of matches as we have to worry about the margins.
However, we should keep the overall BE record as a tie breaker...just in case.
BET should be a separate betting/fundraising opportunity...let's not count our chickens before they hatch/reverse jinxing going on here

That's a little complicated, don't you think Cambridge?
Maybe just pick each game result.
Tiebreak: Overall BE Record Second tiebreak: pick Hoya high scorer for each game; most # correct wins this tiebreak.

It ain't betting if it doesn't involve a spread damn it...I want to make this interesting...hahahaha. I mean I need an excuse to spend hours researching pomeroy, rpi, sagarin, various offshore bookies, reading scouting reports, etc to determine the final margin. Win or loss...too easy. Hahaha. I jest, whatever you guys want works for me.

I agree that you're getting a little too complicated... leave it to hoya alums to make a basic knowledge of astonuclear physics necessary to compete in a sports betting pool Let's be inclusive here.. the more people that join the merrier... If you keep it simple, I'm in

Everyone agreed on my suggestion for the rules then? Almost makes it more of a true pool. Pick the winner of each Hoya game and the high Hoya scorer. The overall record is first tiebreak; # correct leading scorers is second.

Although I find CambridgeHoya's suggestions intriguing, I think it may be more manageable if we stick to prior suggestions, mostly because it will encourage as many people as possible to join.
So, the winner will be that individual who gets closest to predicting the outcome of each BE game.
If more than one person nails this, then we will revert to predictions for our overall BE record as tiebreak #1.
Finally, if more than one person nails the tiebreak, we will move into double OT, and I guess YB's high scorer suggestion would serve as a fun tiebreak #2.
So, although we still have a little time to get this thing rolling, I would like to set a tentative deadline of December 24th (after the Hawaii tournament) for all entries and $$$.
We can throw around some more ideas, but so far, I think we may have to pass on the more complicated ways in service of simplicity and time.
Also, I'm not sure what the best way to do this is, but I was thinking about trying to post a link to a separate site to make everyone's predictions public.
OK Hoyas, if you're not already involved, get involved, and if you have already expressed interest in participating, spread the word. Perhaps we could even send out a massive email, and try to something BIG, like accumulate $1000/+.
GO HOYAS!!!

Any activity which collects money for the outcome of a sporting event, is (by the definition of many jurisdictions) a form of gambling, and the NCAA takes a dim view of such activities.
A sports pool is therefore not suitable for this board.
