I just wanted to say that I am so happy that the student section has taken to Roy. I mean I love Jeff Green and man, do I appreciate Wallace. But Big Roy is special.
Not only is he a local kid, but he's a local kid that always wanted to be a Hoya. When he verbally committed so early (at 14), he was already a man-child, but many criticized his coordination and ability. He took quite a beating on this board too. People questioning if he had the fire. To top it all off, the Hoyas had a disappointing season, followed immeadiately by a nightmare season. Esh left. Things seemed uncertain at the Hilltop...hell, the Princeton offense was coming to town.
But what did Roy do? Did he panic? Did he head for greener pastures? Noooo, Roy went to work. He kept his head in the books and his body in the gym, always the first in and the last out. By all accounts he worked harder than anyone over the summer. Even when the Kenner League accounts painted him as a huge project, he continued to work.
According to JTIII this work ethic didn't stop when he got to GU. He busts his butt and is described as a coach's dream. He goes out and plays hard. Running harder than we thought he could. Adding a much needed defensive presence in the lane. All at the tender age of 17.
But he's done something else, perhaps even more important. Not that he's done this alone, as the other players certainly have played a role, but Roy has touched off something amongst the student population. Perhaps it was the moves he busted at Midnight Madness. Perhaps it is his personable nature. But whatever it is, this lifelong Hoya has found a home...
The Roy chants are incredible and touching considering he always wanted to be a Hoya and has worked so hard to make that dream come true. He has taken a lot of flak and will probably continue to do so as he developes as a player. He certainly has a ways to go before he is the dominant force we know he can and will be, but there is no doubt he clearly possesses the heart of a Hoya.
