I was thinking about this back when Kentucky played UNC the previous weekend. Hibbert, for all of his flaws, was simply furtheer ahead of Shag even though Roy is at least two years younger (I think Shag was 19 when he made it to UK).
Hibbert last season in high school was All Met worthy and more successful than Alleyne's senior year in NYC. Nevertheless it was Alleyne who was generally more highly regarded by national gurus. Let me point out that Alleyne, like Roy, had to deal with a lot of people (fans and gurus alike) calling him overrated and incapable of playing in the Big East (back when he was committed to Rutgers). Now on a Rutgers forum you'll find that a bunch of people are suggesting he would be the best player on the Scarlet Knights' team which is an exaggeration at this point.

It's a little bit of the "streetball effect."
Perimeter players look cooler. They are smooth. Things look effortless. Their abilities seem to come from skills, not something "natural" like height.
It's the reasons why people think Kobe was more important to the Lakers' titles than Shaq.
For this reason, since tall guys often do it ugly, basketball fans choose to ignore the fact that even a gawky-looking player like Roy, Shagari or dare I say Yao Ming can have a tremendous positive effect on the game.
Even the #1 team in the land, Illinois, altered their shots for Roy. Sure, they still beat us, but these are the quickest players in the country, and he was still somewhat effect defensively while in there.
Offensively, it seems he has a bit to learn. The offense just doesn't move as quickly with him in there, and he lacks dimensions Jeff has.
But people have to adjust their expectations for Roy:
1. He's never going to do a 360 dunk. You accept some missed layups and accept the total package. If he shoots 50% - be happy in that even if there are some really ugly shots. 2. Acknowledge what the announcer said of Alleyne yesterday: "You never realize how tall a 7' is until you try to play against one." There's real value in Roy or Shagari even without a 360 dunk..
