Well, it may not be a big victory, but it still feels good! I have to say it's been a while since I've been so excited about a Hoyas team. Though I only heard part of the game on online radio, I feel like this team has more drive than recently. And it feels good to get a win!
I look forward to the next one...

Just got back to the computer in my room, which is only about 3 minutes walking from McD - which is a strange, but beautiful feeling.
Less beautiful: our offense tonight. If we had played the way we played against Illinois tonight, we would have won by 40+. No one Hoya, beside Ray Reed, had much fire tonight. Guibunda came in, which was nice to see - until he threw up a shot that looked worse than Roy's flailing against IL. Hopefully he was just nervous.
More later. BTW, our crowd's intensity was great.

Ugh. The offense was repugnant tonight. Not a fun game to watch.

Alright, so maybe the offense wasn't so good. But McDonough was pumped? A raucous crowd would be fun.

From what I've heard (on the phone with a couple buddies who were at the game), our poor offensive performance was much more the result of a JT III trying to work on various aspects of the offense, as well as giving some burn to bench-warmers, rather than us really struggling with our shooting or scoring.
In other words, I heard that if our goal would have been to score 80 points or so, we could have, and more importantly, that SJS couldn't really do anything against us until the end.
I also heard that Hibbert looked good, making some very astute passes for a 7 footer (as indicated by 5 assists in 23 minutes), and blocking/altering many shots (more than 2 shots indicated in the box score). Otherwise, the most important stat of this game is that 10 players saw double digit minutes (technically only 9, but I threw in Diaw, as he played 9 minutes).
I also heard that any conspiracy theories as to why Guibunda isn't getting more time should be put to rest, as he appeared to be out of sorts on the court. Not only is he not physically prepared for the Big East, but he also put up, what by all accounts was one heck of a brick.
Good news is that not only was there a Ray Reed sighting, but he didn't turn the ball over, and appeared to be in control, and more comfortable running the offense. In prior games, I thought he was guilty of over-dribbling and seem to be forcing things. Obviously, this was against SJS, but still, I think we shouldn't be giving up on Ray Ray just quite yet.
I'm interested in hearing more from people who were there. What single most important thing did the team take away from this game (besides an apparently enthusiastic on-campus crowd)?

Roy looked SCARED STIFF everytime the ball was passed to him with his back to the basket. I know he's a freshman and he's raw and blah blah blah...he better not look scared in Big East play. Chris Taft et al. will eat him alive. He did have a nice little layup before which he took about 64 steps though. Highlight of the game was the Sead Dizdarevic basket. Brought down house.

BEAT ORAL ROBERTS & BRING HOME A TROPHY! I gotta take issue with your Reed evaluation. He did play better than normal Reed, but not really in as much control as a point guard should be. He drove in a couple times and it was a bit out of control, his misses (although only 3) ought to be counted as turnovers because they were after bad drives and were mainly desperation drives. Also he wasn't into the flow of the offense. A couple of times he didnt cut when it looked like he should have, and even one of our players kinda yelled at him to move because he was just standing their. A couple of his drives were purely selfish and it was clear 3 seconds before he drove that he had no interest to work the offense (i think one time there had only been about 8 seconds off the shot clock. Ok, now the positives. He had 3 assists and no real turnovers, he did look good about 75% of the time. His D was great, hardnosed and no holds barred (one time i think he got caught up in a pick which is no big deal). If he played like this all the time than i think he would be more productive, but again, he isnt all there yet.

Just a brief recap - it was an ugly, ugly game to watch, but we came out on top and that's all that matters. The atmosphere was decent, not fantastic, but not horrible either. The game didn't sell out, but according to Yahoo the attendance was 2,154, which isn't too bad for a 2,500 seat arena against a pretty bad team.
Ray Reed was our leading scorer with 10 points, he played MUCH better today. He stayed in control for the most part and had some nice drives to the hoop. Our starters didn't play very well, Brandon and Jeff were fairly quiet with 9 and 7, and Wallace was 2-10 from the field. Our shooting was pretty bad, and we STILL can't get many FT attempts, only 9 today. We MUST get more physical on the interior both on offense and on D.
My main issue today is that we weren't AGGRESSIVE enough on both sides of the floor, it seems like we were sleeping through some parts of the game. We need to learn to attack the basket and draw fouls. That said, a subpar effort in my opinion was still clearly too much for SJSU.
And, yes, Sead's jumper from just inside the three point line with about a minute left did in fact bring the house down.
Now let's tear ISH up in Hawaii!

Thanks for the extra insight on Reed's play today. I want you to know that this wasn't my evaluation, as I was simply repeating the info I heard from a couple other board members who were at the game. Not that I'm making excuses or anything, but I didn't see the game, so I'm relying upon other's info to form an opinion. I may have been listening with rose-colored glasses (headphones?), or maybe you saw some things with a more critical eye than others. Either way, I am glad that despite your criticisms, you think he played well 75% of the time, and also, perhaps more importantly, that his D was strong. Let's hope his play makes at least incremental improvement, because we may need some additional depth as the season goes forward. IMO, I would prefer to see Cook play more minutes at the 1 (if Wallace is out), and see Ross play more, but I'm sure JT III sees things he likes about Reed, and that is why he is trying to develop him during real-game situations.

Great quote by JTIII in WP about Big Roy:
"He's one of our better passers," Coach John Thompson III said. "Roy is not a mascot. For us to have success this year, he has to keep getting better. . . . His size causes dilemmas for people, and his passing will one day cause dilemmas for people."

I wasn't there today, so I can't assess how Roy played. I will say that he did not look "scared stiff" against Illinois. He rushed some shots, but he looked alright during the games. Give the kid some time. He's going to be a good one. And, Chris Taft has eaten up a lot of people....if he does so to Roy, Roy won't be the only one. There is a reason Taft is expected to be a lottery pick. Also, after watching Shagari Alleyne today, and how much he has improved in the last year, I think that Roy will be just fine.

I agree HoyaNJ5, I wish people would stop bashing the kid anytime he doesnt score 12 pts and grab 10 boards.
Just because he doesnt have a great game doesnt mean he's scared stiff. Joe, do you have some personal issue with Roy? You're being really harsh on him, you wouldnt even describe a really nice post move without calling it a travel. This guy has had to deal with a lot of critics and I wish people would just let him get a break for once, especially today. The guy just turned 18!!! I think he can really develop into a solid player over the next 4 seasons.
HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY ROY!!!!!

hibbert was not bad he was a presence defensively.. he had a couple of nice passes one great one off the high post to an easy inside basket... he does need to learn to go right up with the ball he has soft hands and can pass.. he missed a couple or few hooks on which he coulda dunked jeff quiet and wallace no mattte what a calm point guard and key presence...and reed a couple of bad shots gotta a rebound with hew minutes left and put up wild poor layup in stead of using the clock jt3 didtalk to him right after that and im sure thats what it was about... and reed did hustle alot much better and aggtressive than ive seen him in a long time and did hit two frees at one time thats better.. and ramell ross another nice outing good d.. and i think they said six rebounds in not alot of time an jt did use alot of plawyers earlier and was teadhing i thougth it was good and bring on oral robert s not a slouch team at all if we can pull out the first and then might bring home a trophy then howard who aint bad i think still undfeated and then norfolk state didnot bobby dandridge go there go hoyas nite nite

I thought the same thing at first. Whenever he got the ball he didn't look like he was gonna do anything offensively. He would just pass it out then it would be passed right back to him. Then I realized there was a method to it--its our offense. They pass it to Roy (or Green) and the opposite end wing cuts to the basket right when Roy gets the ball and that is the #1 pass. If it isnt there Roy looks to the bottom wing or he gives it back to the player who passed it to him. It looks redundant and ineffective if neither of the passes are there, but it works so well when it does (look at the amount of assists our Green and Hibbs have). It is cool as hell to watch when it becomes clear (took me 4 live games to get it). I think we have to remember that everytime the ball goes to Hibbs or Green it is not for a 1 on 1 post up. Look for them to go to the basket if the shot clock is under 10-15 seconds but not if it is above that mark. This team is looking to pass first and get a quick layup ALWAYS, not 3s, not 1 on 1 matchups, unless the shot clock is down or the 3 is wide open. So, long winded response to Roy looking scared, his wandering eyes were not looking to just get rid of the ball, but looking to make a pass to a cutter.
