of the past in the pre Big east part of the season. They talked about "daddy" scheduling St. Leo's and mentioned that we had played Citadel and will play Norfolk St. and Howard. I guess the point is that scheduling the #1 team in the country is a big improvement. Almost every major college team has some cupcakes on their schedule, so Citadel, Norfolk St, and Howard aren't a problem in my opinion.

The Hoyas haven't played St. Leo since Iverson's freshmen season I believe. And despite some bad strength of schedule as a result of too many MEAC teams the Hoyas have played at least a couple of very good and ranked teams for non-conference games for the majority of the last ten seasons. Nevertheless ESPN and others in the media will hold on to these dated notions of the Hoyas playing nobodies until the end of times it seems.

Very true, I haven't checked the schedules lately but Pitt and Syracuse usually tend to have notoriously bad schedules as well, Boeheim sometimes doesnt leave the state of New York till January. They just play one game in a thing like the Jimmy V Classic and all else is ignored, while that isn't the case for us.

FWIW - Our SOS rank is currently 24 for the 2005 season (as per Pomeroy's RPI site below). Granted, this will dip a bit after San Jose St, but still not that bad considering we'll have 3 Rainbow Classic games which would presumably offset some of the softness with Norfolk St and Howard still looming on the schedule. kenpom.com/rpi.php

It doesn't matter what ESPN says, it is what the computer says. The people on the selection committee punch in the numbers and that is that. And besides, when we are playing Illinois they are number 1, period, end of story.

kenpom.com/sked.php?team=Georgetown&t=pAssuming we split the other two Rainbow Classic games, Pomeroy's prediction is 7-9 in the BE and 13-12 (or, rather, 14-13 adding the two other games). I would be very happy to be NIT bound this year, and going through his W/Ls, it seems pretty reasonable. Hoya Saxa -- great start to the 1st half last night. Hopefully we'll be able to stretch that 16 minutes to 40 against less tough opponents!

I'm really not surprised that Every Syracuse Player's Network (ESPN) would continue to deride our schedule - maybe when they actually air our games on more than a sattelite channel they can comment on our games. My personal feeling is that when we are good (next season) and Dicky V comes over to the student section - I will politely inform him that he isn't a basketball analyst or a basketball fan - he's just a fan of Duke, Syracuse, Oklahoma State, and UConn - and he can stop blocking my view of the game.

Our schedule is solid this year. We won't finish below 50 in SOS for once.
Of course, with this young team you wind up with a poor record perhaps in the end- but not necesaarily a bad thing as they develop and grow.

My only gripe with the schedule (aside from Sunday noon starts, lack of a 'Cuse rematch, and the scheduling of a certain home UConn game over winter break ) is that we basically only have 1 real quality opponent in our OOC, that being Illinois. While we do have some decent mid-major to major conference foes - Temple, Penn State, Davidson, Oral Roberts and whoever else we play in Hawaii - we will likely only be playing one ranked team before BE play. Admittedly, it was the #1 team in the nation. However, remember that the NCAA selection committee looks for "quality wins" in non-conference play. We basically don't have a shot at that now this year. I know it may be too early to put NCAA Tournament and Georgetown in the same sentence yet, but it can be an issue for future years.

CAHoya, I disagree. I think they look at quality wins, period. At Davidson, PSU, and others will count. We didn't have to win Illinois, but Temple might have been nice.
In the end, we will likely backload our year with wins. That counts also.

I agree. We're being singled out bc of our past but totally without reason, I think.
Look at Syracuse's schedule. Or Maryland's. Yuck.

How did you fail to mention Pitt or ND's schedule. Those are pathetic. In the bottom 10 of SOS.

We basically don't have a shot at that now this year. I know it may be too early to put NCAA Tournament and Georgetown in the same sentence yet, but it can be an issue for future years. I think that we should definitely look at scheduling 3-4 top 50 schools in the non-con schedule of the future, but I also think that if we do well in the Rainbow Classic, we'll have a solid chance at a quality non-conference win, against last year's Sweet 16 team UAB. Temple, if we had won, might have had a chance to be a quality win. And we'll have plenty of chances for quality wins in the BE schedule. Quality wins only matter out of conference if you're in a weak conference. The tourney selection process is based on a number of things. 1. RPI 2. Quality Wins 3. Road wins The only time that quality wins OOC would be a major factor is for a bubble team on the order of 45-50 in RPI ranking.
