This can’t be real life. We can’t hire one of the greatest coaches of all time because of what happened at Louisville but we can hire one of the assistants that actually got in trouble. This program is a complete joke. I can’t wait to hear the spin on this one. Regardless of KJ's role in whatever went down, the spin is quite obvious. It's public perception and name recognition. Almost everyone knows who Rick Pitino is, and he has a slimy perception amongst a lot of college basketball fans. Now, how many people do you think know Kenny Johson? And how many people will even know he's an assistant coach at Georgetown? I'm old enough to remember hand-wringing and pearl-clutching from some around here when we hired the likes of Broads and Nickelberry. But I'm sure those folks will be on board with this hire.

Do you honestly not get this line of thinking - i.e. you’re shocked that people are frustrated - or are you just being obtuse? And enough of the core talk. There is no core. There are 4 new freshmen and a at best 2 or 3 mismatched parts that helped win zero conference games that weren’t against DePaul. Not sure why the need to call me obtuse because I disagree. It was an honest question.

Very disappointing news. One of the selling points getting Cooley is that the full overhaul every year we had under Ewing would be a thing of the past. Even in the free agent era of college basketball, the best programs figure out a way to keep pieces around and grow. As poor as this season was, the silver lining was supposed to be stability. Instead we are back to square one. Sigh. Let’s hope $$$ cures all ills. I dont get this line of thinking. If you keep 3 core guys from last seasons roster and have 4 incoming recruits (top ranked group in BE) then you do have a 7 person core to build off of. That's not square 1 Do you honestly not get this line of thinking - i.e. you’re shocked that people are frustrated - or are you just being obtuse? And enough of the core talk. There is no core. Serious question, not related to the current discussion: how many more rebuilds and more empty seats will it take before Georgetown University says "enough"? I think this scenario is closer than we think it could be.

Here’s the more troubling thing - if we assume that Cooley also really wants to bring back Fielder, and it’s true that we have this vaunted gigantic NIL piggy bank at his disposal, then you just make the kid an offer he can’t refuse. If he liked the school at all, he’d probably stay over similar offers. Pay the main, Shirley.

To me, I think Fielder is the biggest player we absolutely need to retain. Beyond that, I am not going to really get upset over any others. From what I’m hearing/reading, you are going to be upset.

Disappointed by the news on Rowan Brumbaugh. I'd hoped the revolving door to which we became accustomed under the prior coaching staff would change. I must be naive. What was the damn point if you were going to lose a guy like Rowan this year?!? Why did I sit through that? Cook/Mutombo I get. Guys who are seasoned and probably capped out I get. But Rowan is on the upswing. I'm like others that if the sport keeps trending this way (and Georgetown in particular), then I'll still tune it but I don't think I can keep buying season tickets. I'm cheering for the Georgetown brand, not the player who pops in for a year and then leaves. If this is a one off, so be it. If this continues the trend from prior years, I'll go cheer on real pros without the veil of education. This. There is no argument now for those that defended the team’s performance on the court this season as building toward something. That debate is closed. We’ve lost 2 players and seem guaranteed to lose at least 2 more. We need to hire a new assistant coach. How did we manage to hire the second coming of Coach Patrick Ewing?

Three schools in three years for the kid. Kind of a joke at this point. What a sport.

This is going to be a rebuild through HS recruiting. Constant recycling of transfer portal players can't be the answer. Your HS recruits are pretty incentivized to transfer after their first year as well. The sport is in ruins.

Lmao. Rowan was not a high major PG. If that wasn't obvious I don't know what to tell you. I'd be much more disappointed if Fielder left This is how I feel. It wouldn't have been next year. I think he realized he was gonna get a bunch of time cut and decided to leave. He wasn’t a big east starter, but certainly could have been a decent contributor down the line. He’s the type of kid you’d like to keep and this program desperately needs some stability - but maybe that’s impossible these days.

So the season was a complete waste on a development front, while also squandering any positive momentum from hiring a new coach. Awesome. It’s really hard to imagine any other coach doing worse than what ours has done so far. Actually shocking.

Do not let Brumbaugh leave. Glue guy and potential all BE player in year or two. Agree with this 100%. I would like to believe him & family see the vision and future at Gtown with him being a huge part of it. A lot of these guys were forced into service much sooner then anticipated. LOL. The “solid core” seems less than solid. Good luck to Rowan. Seems like a good kid.

The conundrum with this core is that the problems (in terms of positions), and thus the solution, are not glaringly obvious. I can talk myself into Brumbaugh, Epps and Mulready being sufficient with another year of development. I can talk myself into Cook, Fielder and Sorber being a solid 4/5 rotation. In both cases we'd probably need at least one more body, but you can see a scenario where the core guys hang around and improve and we just need to augment with depth rather than needing to land a superstar in the portal. Of course we know that can't really be the case (or the strategy) because if we believe in both of those things we're essentially running it back with a 2-18 team and expecting a dramatically different result. Can't do that. So with that in mind, plus our purportedly substantial NIL budget, we start "star hunting" in the portal. But the simple fact is that none of this stuff happens in a vacuum, and whatever position we spend most of our NIL on, there's a very real chance that it drives off one or more of the current guys who feels recruited over. For example if we spend big on a point guard we might lose Brumbaugh, if we land a big fish at PF/C then Fielder and/or Cook may enter the portal. So you have to think not just one but two or three moves ahead and prepare yourself for that. Inevitably there will be some people that lament the roster turning over yet again, but coming off of 2-18 you have 2 choices--either keep the core guys happy and run it back, hoping they miraculously grow into a >.500 team (or accepting it if they once again are not), OR, upgrade the talent and live with the hurt feelings and portal declarations that follow. It's unfortunate but to me the choice is obvious. I think we have no choice but to upgrade as much as we can wherever we can and let the chips fall where they may as it pertains to departures. The biggest issue we had was our woeful defense and especially opponents 2point FG%, which I largely blame on not having anyone who can protect the rim. Getting that player in the fold would be my priority #1. I would then try to upgrade both guard spots. If there's an elite forward out there who wants to play for Cooley, sign him up too. This seems right to me. Some folks around here have been talking out of both sides of their mouth about this team all season - on the one hand, this is a "solid core;" on the other, we simply couldn't compete in the Big East this season because of our lack of talent. "It's the talent" was the mantra for many after every loss. Well, if it's the talent, then why would we bring it all back? Why would we want to? We need *major* upgrades across the board, and the incoming freshmen can not be expected to provide that. Bully for them and us if they do, but it can't be part of the design. We need a couple of impact players to displace a couple of the players who were in the rotation this year. It's an uphill battle. Let's see what Cooley and company can do.

Can someone help me figure out this math? We have 4 highly regarded incoming freshman, 5 returning contributors, and 4 transfers … but play MAX 9 guys? So are freshman expected to sit (and then stick around for year 2), is anyone from the returning group going to take a step back in minutes, or are any of the transfers coming without a clear role? And where does the improvement come from that’s going to make us a bubble team? Start with Sorber starting and Cook moving to the backup role. We have much improved interior defense, our greatest weakness, and a very good passing big man to create more open shots. First step to significant improvement. Then Fielder is able to move to the 4 with healthy legs giving him good mobility. We now have a significant improvement over Massoud defensively, 3 point shooting, and rebounding. A second significant improvement. Styles can stay at the 3 instead of having to play the 4 much of the game so he has fewer fouls and will get more looks for open 3s with Sorber and Fielder on the floor. He will have better backup with Drew and Caleb than he had with Bristol. A third improvement. Epps has a backup in Mulready to keep him fresh and an alternate when he has a cold shooting night. Probable small improvement. Rowan, if he stays, as a year of D1 experience and showed a lot of improvement at the end of the season. If he stays and continues to improve that is another small improvement. if the transfers give us depth and experience at the PG and PF spots, that would be a significant improvement. we really only had an 8 man rotation with Massoud playing only because we had no other choice. Having a strong 8 man rotation with a solid bench to cover injuries and foul trouble is a significant improvement. with a couple of high quality transfers and at most 1 person from the returning core leaving, we have a significantly improved team on paper. That needs to translate to a MUCH improved defense and multiple offensive threats on the floor playing against good Big East teams. How big a step forward Cooley will make with that roster will only be seen a year from now. I think being a middle of the pack BE team with a .500 record in the conference is possible with that roster, but not any certainty. Anything other than a significant improvement over this year would be a major cause for concern. This scenario ... would not do it. You're basically inserting a freshman center into the current lineup, moving Cook to the bench and expecting significant improvement. That's a pipe dream. We need at least 2 new starters who are better than anyone we have on the team in order to make any sort of significant improvement. And that's the floor.

I realize we are in the Wild Wild West with the portal and transfers, but are there any rules about when a player can announce his transfer choice? I would think the NCAA would not want announcement to detract from the ongoing tournament, but they don't seem to have much power or control over anything at the moment.

I mean, OK, yes, losing to us would have really hurt their chances but I believe the overriding point is that beating us doesn’t help their chances at all. We’re just kind of there on opposing Big East schedules as a bullet to be dodged. It’s certainly a long way from when we assumed that we would be one of the standard bearers of the new big east back in 2014. But what was assumed in 2014 means nothing, if they can’t anticipate that DePaul and us are gonna result in at least 2 Q4 matchups right now and can’t beat us handily then that’s their fault. Them missing the tournament is all on them. When Cooley gets things moving again then they will complain our budget or some other nonsense. If your offense can’t obliterate what was (what many complained for months on here insufferably) one of worst defenses in BE history then you’re not very good. Just look at their actual net record breakdown. A couple teams have Q3 losses, one went under .500 in Q2 games and some have a ton of Q4 games. I do think bid stealing should be form the bubble team in your own league if there is one, it’s dumb to take from another when non of your tournament teams could win the championship against a non tournament team. Not sure how you got that I was saying a 2014 assumption affected this years tournament selections. I wasn’t. Just a testament to the downfall of our program.

PC not blowing Gtown out in the two regular season games hurt their NET, it wasn’t just about getting wins but the margins you won by. I understand. But if Gtown or DePaul had higher NETs that would've likely meant wins in games we had a chance late in games - like Seton Hall, St John's and PC. Which would've made their candidacies even more moot. I mean, OK, yes, losing to us would have really hurt their chances but I believe the overriding point is that beating us doesn’t help their chances at all.
