Update: the protest is resolved and Men's 800m results are official. No change in the order, unfortunately for Tinoda. Bummer.
Still an excellent season for the young man. We're all really proud of him and can't wait to watch him in outdoors!

Tinoda unfortunately was 4th in his heat and 9th on time, and as of right now will not qualify for the final in the 800m. Well-known dickhead Sean Dolan of Villanova (who, like Scottie Reynolds before him, has been competing collegiately since the 90s) cut Tinoda off at ~225m and broke his stride, and Tinoda was boxed in much of the rest of the race. Defending champion Yusuf Bizimana of Texas also did not make the final.
There is a protest - seeming to involve Wisconsin's Abdullahi Hassan. I'll update if that impacts Tinoda's status.

Abel looked great, very in control hanging in 4/5 all race always in contact with the Auto Q spots. Got tangled up with NAU's Sahlman in the last 10 meters but still finished 4th in 3:58.77 to automatically qualify for the final.
Way to go, Abel! Great start to the meet! Hoya Saxa!

Men's declared list: www.rtspt.com/ncaa/d1indoor24/men_declared.htmAll anticipated Hoyas made the field! And all Hoyas entries have the potential to score and earn AA at the meet! Event 4 Men 800 Meter Run Prelims =============================================================================== Name Year School Seed =============================================================================== ... 8 179 Tinoda Matsatsa FR Georgetown 1:46.87 Event 5 Men 1 Mile Run Prelims =============================================================================== Name Year School Seed =============================================================================== ... 9 338 Ethan Strand JR North Carolina 3:54.62 10 184 Abel Teffra JR Georgetown 3:54.62 (A lot of attrition from the season list with guys opting to focus on other events, but Abel (16) would have made the meet anyway) Event 10 Men Distance Medley =============================================================================== School Seed =============================================================================== ... 11 Georgetown 9:23.78 1) #182 Matthew Payamps SR 2) #178 Nicholas Givan SO 3) #179 Tinoda Matsatsa FR 4) #184 Abel Teffra JR (All teams ahead of the Hoyas declared [that was a dumb speculative post on my part] but they made it! It will be interesting to see if a substitution is made for Tinoda or Abel on the relay. Heats of both 800m and mile will run before the DMR so coaches will be able to gauge how guys are feeling.) Go Hoyas! Women's field to follow!

I don't know if TFRRS lists are complete, but Sunday February 25 was the last day to post a qualifying mark.
As of this morning Tinoda Matsatsa is 8th in the 800m (1:46.87), Abel Teffra is tied for the 16th and final qualifying spot in the mile (3:54.62) (though several runners ahead of him will likely run other events), and the men's DMR is 11th (9:23.78) (12 relays qualify).
For the women, Melissa Riggins is 14th in the mile (4:30.73). Chloe Scrimgeour is 8th (8:50.97) and Melissa is 14th (8:52.82) in the 3000m. Chloe is 7th (15:24.36) in the 5000m.

Also, I would be surprised if Northern Arizona entered a DMR at Nationals. Young and Quax seem likely to double 3k/5k. Sahlman has one of the fastest mile times in the nation and that's a really tough double to come back from mile prelims to the DMR (especially with the expedited timetable of the men's/women's-only nights). I don't know what the substitute rules are, but I think it used to be you could only swap out one runner from the qualifying squad (when I was a freshman, Colorado St. qualified a DMR with Bryan Berryhill anchoring, then he only ran (and won) the mile at Nationals and the relay got pantsed without him). I know nobody is relying on my "expert analysis" (biggest of sarcasm fonts) on this, but I took a second look at the 5k charts and reconsidered my take on whether they'll run the DMR. Obviously Nico is doubling 5k/3k and not going to run the relay (he's not Rupp, and not even King Ches could pull off the triple), so they would need to sub him out (they have another 3:57 miler (run at Boston, so not even an altitude conversion) or shift Sahlman or Quax and slip a sub in the 1200 or 800). However, NAU has another guy higher than Theo Quax on the 5k list, so holding him out doesn't cost them the points I thought it might. A DMR/3K double is very doable for someone of Quax's caliber. The real risk is still Sahlman, who would need to double back from the mile prelims to run the DMR. Maybe they'll move him to the 800 leg (he's run 1:47.88 indoors this year) for less cumulative work or to the mile anchor leg for an extra 6 minutes of rest after his mile heat. Either way, if NAU is a serious contender for the Indoor title, the points of a high-finish in the DMR aren't ones they're likely to leave on the table. Bummed that the Hoyas men won't have a buffer, and I hope they make the meet.

At the Notre Dame meet Men's DMR 1 Northern Arizona 9:17.43 2 North Carolina 9:17.92 3 Michigan 9:19.33 4 Wisconsin 9:21.07 5 Indiana 9:23.41 6 Cornell 9:24.49 So if the Notre Dame results stand and the Arkansas meet stands, it looks as if the Hoyas have the 11th fastest time; remember the top 12 go to nationals. Also, the Notre Dame track is 320m, which is bigger than the 200m track, and I think the times on that track will be modified down. Thank you for the update and analysis. Hopefully the men get in!
