I think your take is a bit premature. The Big East conference will be much weaker this year.
Meanwhile, we should be a bit stronger at every position and much better defensively overall. A competent 5 who takes the pressure off of Fielder and Sorber would be an important add to raise the ceiling.
If you were to offer me a bet about them being the 2nd worst team in the conference again, I think I would bet confidently they will do better.
Seton Hall and Villanova are struggling to fill out their rosters with quality.
DePaul has brought in a bunch of bodies, but it is unclear how quickly Holtzman will get them to improve their results.
I think UConn, Marquette, Creighton, Xavier, and St. Johns on paper are better than the Hoyas.
I think Butler and Providence are debate-able. So, I think 6th, 7th and 8th are in play. It is slower progress than I would want, I think that is potentially acceptable progress.
Hopefully, the luck starts breaking in our favor with Curtis living up to his projections and a couple of the freshmen being ready to contribute.

Mack started last season on fire from 3 before he caught mono. Hopefully, that is indicative of his long term term ability. That would go a long way to address the team's outside shooting needs. If he struggles and if Curtis can't regain his confidence, then we could be challenged from 3.

I've read that it doesn't block us as several as expected to make their own decisions (e.g. A. Lewis) , but it certainly doesn't help us with the Durant guys.

I am also disappointed not getting Dainja. Not sure everyone realizes that Memphis has FedEx money committed for NIL. Best I can tell, Memphis and Arkansas currently have the deepest pockets in the game. It is disappointing we couldn’t peel Dainja away.
I am conflicted - on one hand I understand the degree of difficulty given supply and demand and threading the needle and getting a sufficiently strong center to fill the need while also leaving some space for Fielder and Sorber. On the other hand, GU pays Cooley $6M to get this done. He had NIL resources as well. One of the risks with Cooley was that he could talk the talk but couldn’t walk the walk.
There is a chance that Fielder and Sorber are (mostly) ready. There is also an equally large chance that we won’t have enough fouls or that we will have an injury and find ourselves in a world a hurt. I guess Burks could play a small ball 5.
At some point, we are going to have to ask ourselves the most undesireable question I can imagine: Everything else being equal and with no other bigs signed, are we a better squad with or without Cook. Being so atrocious defensively last year was upsetting, but I think we are a better team with him.

Dain Dianja would signficantly raise the ceiling of the current roster on paper. It would make for an exciting season of watching Georgetown basketball.

He understudied Kofi Cockburn, but then took a slight step backwards from sophomore to junior seasons. Saw his minutes cut in half. Epps loves this kid and coach thinks he could make him into double double machine. More to come. I think he just needs about 20 minutes a game and a couple of post up called for him to get double doubles. He is a big boy especially with a lot of the size in the conference not here next year.

Boya or others any idea who this "Formal Hoya" is on X? Very new account, seems to have some insider knowledge... To be clear I am not asking to have anyone outed...more asking we think this person has some legitimate ties and can be counted on for Hoya news...? Formal has shared that he a a member of small chat group that includes people closely connected to the program. I understand that the situation is 2 degrees of separation. He is considered to be a reliable source, but we have to remember that he has been able to share what EC are the staff think/expect and not what an 18-24 year old will actually do.

Potentially huge news for the Hoyas. Stay tuned. It’s gonna happen. Coach seems confident. We’ll be done after this and our rotation will be about 9 deep. Thanks, B&G. Generally, or are you referencing Dainja?

I apologize. I had shared the significance in another thread.
Don't overread into this. Dainja had committed to Memphis. Then, Penny signed Cisse on top of him. There is speculation that Dainja will shake loose. Observers think there may be 'smoke' here reading the social media tea leaves.
Dain Dainja is exactly the big bodied center that fits our need. He could be better on rim protection but he brings experiece, size and strength and is a force in the paint.
I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. He is graduating today so no updates are expected until early next week at the earliest.

Cooley, Georgetown and Georgetown fans were stabbed in the back by Benedict Akok at the last second. This doomed the season from the start as Akok was slotted for a starting rim protecting role, NIL allocated, etc. At that point it was not possible to find a comparable replacement. Akok Akok averaged 13.6 minutes, 3.0 points, and 2.5 rebounds for a 9-23 West Virginia team. Acting like he'd have made a substantial difference on last year's Georgetown squad is insane. Boya, If you don't think a healthy Akok that would have kept Ish and Heath off of the floor and provided instant rim protection that Cook couldn't provide wouldn't have been a massive help, then you know less about basketball than I thought. On last year's team, Akok might have been worth 4 additional wins.

What?! …”he's listed as a guard on the team's official roster, at 6-9”…He is super-athletic. I think he has also been listed as a SF. Kentucky used him as a reserve 4, and 4 is where I expect we will see him. That he wants to play such great defense is great news for us.

With Cisse apparently joining Memphis, there is speculation that Dain Dainja may shake loose. Thanks - saved me from posting anything about Cisse. Here are Dain's highlights, has a nice low post game, seems sneaky athletic but not sure how good he is defensively...would be a guy you don't have to promise minutes to and if he beats out the Freshman a good problem to have... I think you need a big body to deal with Hugely and Christ in conference. And then he can bully teams that don’t have size and strength. He gives you a different look. You play him 20 minutes a game and have Sorber back him up. You put Burks and Fielder platooning at the 4. Then you have a variety of big pieces. Super athletic, great long range shooter, bully, and a bit of all-around. I think he fits…if he turns out to be the guy.

It was good to know from CaliHoya’s report that Cooley knows he still needs a center. If we add one that is a veteran, big bodied and defensively solid, then the ceiling of this team rises - potentially significantly. That is the biggest missing piece. Part my concerns about the Hoyas under-performing and losing momentum with retaining players and recruiting others have stemmed from the need to shore up the defense at the 5. Now that I understand Cooley is on the same page, it sets me at ease
Given the last 4 years, I don’t blame fans that bring a modicum of skepticism. We have had our hopes up too many times. And those hopes were crushed…absolutely crushed. When you take a deeper analysis, Peavy is a great add. Mack is a great add. I can see why Curtis was added. Banks is a great add. (Imagine Karaban having to deal with his defense). One more solid piece away from having a young team capable of going .500 in the conference.

Well, all of his additions minus Peavy are players who will be upperclassmen in 2025-2026. And they are high ceiling guys. Regardless, he is building for the future and not the moment.
