This doesn't qualify as an official annoucement, and it's something we've known about "semi-officially" for some time now, but according to Josh Barr, WaPost, St. John's assistant coach Donald R. Shopland Jr. has announced that Mescheriakov is indeed bound for Georgetown. Transcript issue are no longer a problem he says. blog.washingtonpost.com/recruitinginsider/

It wasn't to be announced until Thursday according to the coach's request and Barr otherwise ignored this, which is a venial (if not cardinal) sin in journalism.
A more appropriate post might have been "A source close to the situation reports that an announcement on Mescheriakov (Mescharakou) will be made as early as tomorrow morning." What would have been wrong with that?

super thrilled to see a Russian Hoya play! now i have an extra reason to cheer for our boys Yup yup yup! I found some varios bits of info on him on Belorussian basketball websites. He's listen as being 200 cm tall, born June 16, 1988 (Happy belated birthday!). Apparently was on the Belorus U-20 team. Not sure where the "Mescharakou" transliteration comes from. The one the Post has been using is the accepted way of rendering "Никита Мещеряков"

Also "leaked" yesterday in the Hoya Hoop Club blog: "We have four new recruits coming next year. Austin Freeman from DeMatha, and Chris Wright from St. John's high school are both two local high school players that everyone knows about. Both were two highly recruited guards that should fit in nicely with our team. We also have Omar Wattad, an outstanding player from Tennessee, and Nikita Mescheriakov another local product. I look forward now to seeing the recruits as usual in McDonough in a few weeks at the Kenner League." guhoyas.cstv.com/genrel/062007aab.html

This post is great news. I hope he is better that Sead. I know they are apples and oranges, but he is our most recent euro-import. I googled Nikita yesterday to see if his scholie had ever been officially announced. He seems like a nice addition.

Dan Helle, who yesterday did a feature on Buzbee, did one today on Nikita on local NBC4. Introduced the subject by saying that Georgetown signed someone who might replace Jeff Green but went on to say "in two or three years". Said next year it would probably be PE2. I didn't know Nikita was a lefty. Showed him taking some shots and doing a layup, then interviewed his coach that said Nikita had been playing games at Georgetown the last two weeks and the Hoyas seem to like what they were seeing. Nikita talks with an accent but speaks English pretty well. Helle might be becoming a Hoya fan what with two features in two days.

In the segment I saw Nikita took a bounce towards the rim and rose up quickly and high and did a one-handed (left hand) slam that started with his hand and rock a good distance behind his head. He has some pretty good 'ups", just like his older bro. Perhaps better than his older bro. Now I know he was doing this in a non-game situation with no one around him to defend the rim. But if he has athleticism, and can really shoot (as almost everyone agrees he can do) and can drive and lives up to his rep as a gifted passer.... good times. He won't get much run next season but the Hoyas may actually have something for down the road. Maybe.
Another thing...though it was hard to be sure considering he was wearing an extra-large T-shirt which he seems to have a nice build. I was expecting a physique like that European player Gtown had on scholarship for about two years in the early 90s; the one that never saw the floor and looked as if he weighed 140 pounds even though he was 6'8 to 6'9. But Nikita looks as if he could have a legitimate build for a D1 college small forward. Then again his older brother was plenty strong now that I think about it.

I might have worded this a little differently:
"Once the money came from coach John Thompson III and the Hoyas, fresh off a run to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four, Nikita's decision was simple."
