The school where you received your undergraduate degree (or are currently attending in pursuit of an undergraduate degree) holds the trump card for any conflict. If you have other reasons for an allegiance (grew up a fan, graduate school, etc.), those allegiances have to be considered secondary to the alma mater. i dont know man...i went to james madison...played a sport there...and i never considered rooting against the team i have been following since i was 8... i even went to the game at jmu 2 years ago...it marked the 3rd i had been in the convo center for a game... growing up in the area and always having season tickets...its kind of hard to throw that away just b/c you went somewhere else... but to each his own... you dont have to throw away your childhood team, i still root for st johns when possible, but your alma mater is part of who you are and you are a part of that school, thats why GU wins mean more to me than anything else, it isnt even close. did you have a chance to compete against GU when you played a sport at JMU? did you purposely play bad or ask the coach to take you out so the Hoyas would have a better chance of winning?

To make things easier, just do what I did attend the school of your childhood team. that way there's no conflicts.

The "always root for the undergrad alma mater rule" doesn't always work, especially when the school you grew up rooting for is basically like the local pro team (like Syracuse or Kentucky - both of whom, coincidentally, have *been* the pro team). If you're one of these cases, and went to numerous games with your parents and had a birthday party there, you're exempt, especially if you did your undergrad at school like California of Pennsylvania.
The exception is during the time that you are actually a legitimate undergrad. You do not root against your classmates (exception - a very close friend (significant others don't count) has a key role on the other team, or a very close friend does not have a key role on the team, but the game will grant the friend something incredibly memorable, like a first-ever NCAA berth).
After you graduate, you get to pick one school. You may root for the other school, and even attend championships and rush the court if the other school wins. But you are not allowed to root against the school you chose. On the bright side, if the school you chose ever performs a significant feat (make the tournament for a dinky school, Final Four for the first time in a long time or a championship), you are excused from the usual rule that men not cry and all of your other friends who chose the same school and were there with you can't mention any of things that you did in celebration of that significant feat when toasting you in the future.

Sounds like someone is carving out a category of one member. How about this: the rule is: always root for the Hoyas. No matter where you grew up, what school you attended, how many schools you attended after, etc. More seriously, if you went to Gtown undergrad, how can you ever root against them after graduation? You just can't. You may root for a lesser alternate school, but you may not remotely root for any event that might tangentially negatively impact the Hoyas. Its just unnatural. Like the tensile strength in Rick Majerus' belt.

Don't forget the other prime directive:
Always root against fat slob self-promoters who paint their bulbous bodies.

I am a Hoya since 82 and live in Knoxville for the past 22 years. I was at a fund raiser dinner last night and talked to Coach Pearl for a while and he said that a HOYA-UT game will not happen this year since the Hoya's are playing Memphis. He was disappointed that they are not playing but I told him that maybe we would meet in San Antonio in the semis. He laughed and said I hope so. By the way, he is not as chubby in person as on TV! GO HOYAS and Jeff please stay.

Bruce Pearl is a ham and egger bent only on bringing his half SWEAT half BUFFOON traveling road show into bigger and brighter lights. He'll never really win anything because ultimately he cares most about himself and not the school he currently schills for. If he kept both eyes on the court and his players instead of publicity stunts and looming want ads he might be a good coach.

I can understand the dislike of Pearl's road show, but I can't really understand people thinking he's not a good coach. He's won everywhere he's been and he's won quickly. I don't like the guy's antics or ethics, but how can you say he's not a good coach?
Would people rather play UT or Memphis?

I don't particularly like his style for winning a national title per se but for consistent winning, recruiting, and just fun to watch basketball, call Bruce Pearl.

Right now, Memphis is higher profile b-ball wise becuase of UT's football prowess. However, they could become another FL if the school continues to put money into the program. That said, the SEC has been the premier football/basketball conference for a while now. III seems to notice that some of the best talent is coming out of the south consistently and by playing a UT or Memphis or Alabama defintiely helps recruiting. The top player in '09 is a kid named Demarcus Cousins from Birmingham. Big Cuz, as he's called, is 6'10 PF/C with plenty of ball skills, can face up and shoot the 18 footer and still bang at 235. Runs the floor well and has grades. As he told me last fall, his mom won't let him play if he doesn't have his grades. Looking academics and ball. III is aware of him. ATL is also rich in talent.

Memphis won't be another Florida for a while, if ever. Florida won two titles. Let's keep some perspective.
It's also very difficult to remain a national power in a weak conference. The last team to do it was UMass (also run by Calipari), and they eventually collapsed.

Defiently rather play memphis now that jeff is gone they will be preseaon #1 and we play them early enough so they probably still will be when we beat them.

But it's an intersitng point, who will be? I'm not sure I'd really be willing to even guess right now. Any takers?

ESPN had Memphis as preseason #1 after everyone declared for the Draft. Cbssportsline put out a top 25 after the withdrawls today. Memphis is #1.
Gtown is #8.
