So, I have been a good boy and kept my mouth shut about this for a while. But this getting absurd. Does anyone have any info on the JTIII contract extention? Anyone have any ideas what we can do to pressure the administration? FWIW, Esherick's extension was announced on May 1, 2003 -- exactly 4 wks after the NIT championship game that year. Now, obviously comparing Esh and JT3 in this situation is like comparing apples and oranges -- but at the very least, it suggests to me that there's a very good chance that nothing will come up for at least the next 7-10 days. Personally, if nothing's come out by graduation day, then I'll start to get concerned... but until then, I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch.

If the timing of announcement of He who shall not be named is consistent--it would be cool to announce III's extension at the Team Banquet! (realize it's not likely to happen but have to come up with a positive after He who shall not be named was brought up)
I think it would be cool if III's extension was announced, Jeff/Roy announced their final decision all in same time frame--and Hoyas add 2/3 more commits--and while it's dreaming--it would be fun and typical Hoya "hit you in bunches" type of info. ;D

By the way your lack of extension for over 3 weeks sounds like a medical problem to me - I'd consult your doctor. Pure gold! Seriously though, give the man time. JTIII has never publicly demanded an extension, and the first thing he did when he got back from the Final Four was go on a recruiting trip. He had plenty of opportunities over the past few weeks to make noises about leaving (which would put a lot of pressure on the administration), and he didn't do it. Those things say to me that he doesn't see his extension as an urgent matter, and that he's willing to let it wait.

Let's hope the delay means III is/was asking for "something" more than just more money. And, of course, let's also hope that Swift Potomac's Lovely Daughter is working on getting the teams of attorneys, architects, etc., necessary to get that "something."

THe man is under contract for next year - there is no immediate urgency to complete or announce anything. How many unfilled major conference jobs are waiting right now? Zero. And if an NBA job is what III really wants, I'm sure there is an out clause in any contract he has or will sign to allow that opportunity. III has a full plate right now with trying to replace assistants, spring signing period, draft matters and the like. As someone said above - who's to say it's not done already. I too think the Banquet would be the proper forum for any kind of announcement or update on the situation. Maybe even some good (or bad) news on the "returning to school" front.

Announcing it at the banquet along with the new practice facility, new assistant coaches, and the signing of a 7 footer might be what it would take for this board to have a dead off-season.

Well there'd still be the Kenner League recaps. Oh wait, there's talk there might not be a Kenner League this summer or it might be moved? Okay... Ummmm..... ...anybody else here think Hoyatalk has jumped the shark lately? Anyone?

Well, there's at least one person who doesn't think we should give JTIII a raise: Will Sommer of The Georgetown Voice:"Keep JTIII in the $500,000-a-year poorhouse," he says, while also bringing up the Egerson saga and getting D-minus Brown to offer up a story of how Pops preventing a player from being an econ major. Faaaantastic. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t let Thompson and his adherents hamstring Georgetown’s ability to educate its students, or basketball players’ access to that education.

Can they just fire the guy already? Stupid tenure. We should prevent the writer from access to season tickets, if he wants to write stupid he doesn't get to enjoy the basketball team

He has a right to free speech.
I also have the right to say he's a self-important clown that writes for a joke newspaper.

Having been one of DMB's students last semester, I can unequivocally say the guy is delusional. It's not to say his arguments don't have merit, but this is also a man who claims the average American owns 1.75 homes, thinks a $40 toll to use the Key Bridge is justifiable, and believes the majority of his class will fail unless they put in two hours every day solely to the study of micro principles (Econ 001). No, he probably can't be fired, which is especially ironic in that he no longer chairs the department because he tried to fire approximately half the professors in the department last time he was in power.
Someone with much more access to information on the Athletic Department's finances would know better than I, but I'm willing to bet our $450,000 "investment" in JTIII's salary got a pretty good return in terms of merchandising/TV, and will continue to generate the same return if we even come close to approaching the same success this year. This isn't a matter of a school selling its academic soul for athletic success--everyone knows we don't have the resources to compete with the $75-100M budgets of other schools. It's a matter of rewarding a University employee who has taken great strides in advancing the school's reputation and brought money into the program. Unfortunate that Doug Brown's bias against where those rewards go and where that reputation is built has rendered him myopic in seeing the benefits of paying JTIII the market rate--also ironic for a man who beats the drum for the efficiency of the market in every class. But if the opponents of investing in the future of the basketball program are going to rally around Brown as a poster boy, all the better. After he's done badmouthing the program he can get back to telling us how we can all build houses for $9,000 if we just move to extreme rural West Virginia.
(all references to Prof. Brown's delusions cf. my notes and recollections from last semester)
