Well, that is a big drag for the Big East. Beilein is going to have Michigan in contention immediately. That sucks.

It is a great get for UofM. Beilein has shown the ability to win with less than blue chip players, now if he can plug the Detroit area athletes into his system Michigan will be dangerous. I have my doubts though about his recruiting ability.
This would seem to be the end of West Virginia as an upperlevel Big East squad for the time being. I can't see many coaches getting in line for that job.

They'll setill be good for a few years.

Wow. I am actually starting to feel bad about the hex we put on the Coliseum in Morgantown the day before they played UCLA. It seems like they won that game and everything has collapsed in a downward spiral since then (unless you count winning the NIT as upward momentum). While this is good for Georgetown I guess, it kinda stinks to lose a good coach in the Big East. I guess that whole rivalry thing with WV that we talked about this season may not work out after all. Oh well, let's dominate in '08!

Don't we play Michigan at home this upcoming season? Should make that matchup more interesting.

I think WVU drops off unless they get one of his guys. I hope they don't come after our remaining assistants, especially due to the style & proximity to the DC metro area.

Beilein built that program into a contender, I think WVU falls back to a Providence-like level very quickly. Depending on who replaces Beilein, I would expect quite a few transfers, these guys signed up for a very specific offense and defense. Just bad news for the BE, hate to see these Big 10 schools swoop in and buy our coaches.
Great move for Beilein and UM. They get a proven coach who can win pretty quickly with all levels of talent. Should be a fun match-up for us next season.

Ah, now I see it was in the dreaded "Pro & College Sports" category. I will leave it to Big Dog to argue the merits of starting the thread there versus here.

Deja Vu? ? You guys should read the Michigan message boards. Most (but not all) of them are unhappy about the Belein hire. "He plays the Princeton offense." "He won't be able to recruit." Real athletes won't want to come to Michigan, etc. Does that sound familiar?? Sounds somewhat like this board when JT3 was hired. I'm with you guys!! He is a great get for Michigan.

Hey, my wolverines' games might become watchable again in a few years! Out with the brainless Petway's of the world, in with Beilein! I like it.

Everyone thought WVU was dead before Beilein took over then showed otherwise. Let's wait and see who they hire before signing death certificates.

I remember someone arguing that Michigan was not a plum job. I beg to differ. While it isn’t, say, Kentucky or North Carolina, it has been an upper echelon Big Ten gig for sometime – I go back to before Cazzie Russell led them to consecutive Final Fours. And I knew they’d get a very good coach. Enter Beilen.
I’ve been very impressed with what he’s done with the personnel he’s had. I don’t think he’ll miss a beat with the Wolverines. His offensive and defensive schemes have proven competitive in as strong a conference as there is and to think he won’t be able recruit is very much beside the point – what he does is win no matter who he has on the floor. He’s insightful enough to go after the types of kids who will thrive in his system, rather than merely recruit so-called All-Americans. Frankly, I think he’ll be able recruit even better talent at Michigan than at WVa because kids are more likely to say yes to that school.
Wolverine fans should relax and smell the bananas: they will be well served by Beilen.
As for WVa, I’ll reserve judgment until I see whom they hire as a successor. I do know they have virtually all their players back, as they had mostly freshmen and sophomores this season, plus a handful of redshirts. They could be a tough out for a few years to come.

In other news, Texas just hired away Duke's womens' b-ball coach.
The money disparity between the big-time football schools and the basketball-first schools is becoming a real problem.

it will be interesting to see if WVU persues Bob Huggins. He played at WVU I believe. He has a great class coming in to Kansas State next year but it was always believed that he would bolt as soon as a better job opened up. If WVU goes after them, it could be interesting.
