I know Leonsis already donates a lot, but wouldn't he benefit directly if III keeps packing Verizon?

Guys, DeGioia was on Comcast SportsNet on Friday saying he'd meet with III to ensure he had a package "that would keep him at GU for a long to come." Not saying that's the same as KY's package to Donovan but clearly the administration gets it. Not sure how productive it is to flood Bernard's and Jack's in boxes when the plan is in place already... Totally agree. This is a non-issue. Bigger issue than his contract are the longer term issues of a practice facility and on campus arena. Agree partly. The University only has enough land to have EITHER a practice facility (highly likely) OR an on-campus arena. There is NO WAY we get both, and Coach has indicated he likes playing regular season games at Verizon. As for pressing the Administration to work out a deal, the ball really IS NOT in their court. Coach will do what is best for him & his family (which may, indeed, be staying at GU during these trying personal times), and I will support him 100%. If he decides the time is right to test waters, so be it, but we as fans cannot influence the negotiations (unless, of course, you are the individual ponying up the necessary money to keep him).

The only reason for the extension is because you can't have a lame duck coach and I don't think our previous AD was really ALL THAT committed to winning per his comments on making the NCAA every year Totally disagree on that one. Athletics reported to a different administrative chain of command in 2003 which was focused on other things--an AD cannot overstep his own bosses when it comes to University-wide priorities. Lang's comments on measured expectations were 100% correct--repeat, 100% CORRECT given the institutional commitment Georgetown University was showing to athletics at that point in time. In 2003,a t least, Georgetown did not have a constitutional right to the top 20 if it was spending 20-25 cents on the dollar to its competitors and making no long term investment in program support. Fans may not like hearing that. If that has (or has not) changed in the intervening years, it does not change its essential truth at that time.

You don't give a guy a SIX YEAR extension if lame duck status is your primary concern. You give him two, maybe three.

Is Esh still getting paid or did we buy him out? Maybe that's why he hasn't taken another job as a coach, because he is still making big bucks off Georgetown. (Of course there could be other explainations for why he hasn't taken another job as a coach, but I am not going there.)

DFW can correct me on this, but I think even with extensions his contract only ran to 2006? If so, I think it's all over there. Esh also has a wife who is asst Commonwealth's Attorney in Arlington. I doubt they are hurting for money, which is good for him. Frees him up to do what he loves, which he is doing on CSTV.

For many years, Athletics reported directly to Student Affairs. The Student Affairs dean at the time of this discussion was Juan Gonzalez. The 2009 contract date is corroborated in the link to the Associated Press, which also noted that, as of March 18, 2004, "Progress toward a new campus arena has been slow." And now it's 2007. sports-att.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=1761419
