There are people who aren't sports fans. I'd be more upset over her "I didn't think they were going to win" comment then that fact that she wasn't watching, but whatever.
The bigger issue here is (more) poor journalism by the Washington Post, IMO. In journalism, usually you want quotes from the most relevant, important, involved people avalible. They should have been talking to the students who were hosting game watch parties, the students who were leading the celebrations in the street, the students decked out in Hoya attire. I'm guessing (hoping) "Claire Cooper"'s comments don't represent a vast majority of Georgetown students (or atleast Hoya fans, although those should be the same thing!) and you'd think a smart writer (who was apparently in the MIDDLE of the post game celebrations would be smart enough to know that. Then again, I guess "smart" can be asking a bit much from the Post somedays...

The Post's reply seems sort of a "man bites dog" approach - not only did the Hoya faithful/insane get excited by this, but so did the people who are usually shut up in the library. It also sort of perpetuates the "Georgetown students are bookworms" storyline. Also, I'd doubt that the Hoya writer was in the middle - they were probably on the edges, where less-strident fans are more likely to dwell.
For the record, the part of me that took the SAT tests didn't think we were going to win either. The part of me that brings signs to Hoya games thought that there was a good chance, but still couldn't comprehend it.

yeah, but I hope 'Claire Coopers' don't read this as being advocacy for coercion into cheering for the Hoyas. If you can't get excited for a regional final with the buzz on campus that must have been palpable (is there any other kind?), then being a Hoya hoops fan is probably not going to happen. although, you just wish this segment of campus would just give it a try and not worry about being one of the herd (not always a bad thing).
I have a feeling that Claire Cooper may have been the only person not hooting and hollering and looked very approachable for a coherent, sober quote.

Some people don't like sports or watching sports. That doesn't make them bad people. Okay, now that's just crazy talk.

You are always going to have these Claire-types at G'town. I remember back in 1996 after the loss to UMass one of my buddies was so enraged seeing people in the library studying instead of watching the game, that he went in and yelled at everyone in the library. Good times.

Without defending Claire Cooper or the Post's reporter in any way/shape/form, people will always have some sort of excuse to be in the library. Guarantee that even Saturday night will find a non-deserted library. That doesn't excuse them from being LAME or WEAK though.

Yes, agreed that their lack of fandom disturbs me.
The major thing was calling someone out that was rooting for us insufficiently - someone that we don't know and who didn't post anything on the talk board so she couldn't defend herself. This wasn't the person who said "I want my $90 back" after the Old Dominion game (actually, it could have been).
And not watching sports doesn't make them bad people - just incomplete people. Rooting for universities that get most of their endowments from tobacco money or that burn couches whether they win or lose makes them bad people.

Its not a disinterest in sports that we should be concerned about. Its a disinterest in living one's life, in dealing with humanity, in having fun, and in not taking oneself too seriously. That said, anyone who is found studying in the library on Saturday afternoon should be summarily dismissed from the University. No exceptions.

better yet, the library should be closed saturday afternoon, so students that work there don't have to show up to work

The line went something like "There are a million stories in the Naked City." Is it possible that this reporter's take was to get the perspective of students who weren't caught up in Hoya BBall fervor? As has been pointed out by others, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of kids like that on campus. Clearly is not axiomatic that if you are a GU student, you're a basketball fan, too.

Although I'm also behind any plan that keeps the Hoyas playing in a different venue along I-95 every weekend since I haven't gone to work on a Saturday in the last four weeks.

There are lots of Claire Coopers at Georgetown, and that's OK with me. There are lots of ways to enrich Swift Potomac's Lovely Daughter, and doing the basketball thing is just one (very huge and important) way (that I spend FAR too much time and effort focusing on).
Maybe she's into soccer or sailing, or into community service or campus ministry. At the very least, you now know who will serve as a conduit for getting season tickets last year. My roommate would go to all the non-basketball kids on our floor and buy their season tickets off of them so that he could bring friends/family to the games (he was a local).
My $0.02.

Unless there was a sea-change this year (haha...sea!), then I can vouch that human beings(?) such as her do not exist on the sailing team. Besides, can you imagine Claire Cooper's being a national champion in anything, except for being LAME! and WEAK!?

I know the Claire Coopers exist but that doesn't mean I have to like them.
A current student I know posted on her blog that she had been indifferent to the Hoyas for four years but decided to become a fan with ten minutes left in the UNC game on Saturday.
No, I didn't get the day wrong, she did. For suddenly choosing to be a fan, you would think she'd at least get the day of the game right.
I quote here: "So I fell in love with Georgetown basketball in the last 10 minutes of the game on Saturday. haha. During most of my time here at Georgetown, I was pretty indifferent to basketball, but now I am a true Hoya. M street so got mobbed when we won and thousands of students ran 2 miles down to the White House to sing the fight song. I wish I could have been there! Curse living off campus!"
Ugh -_-

True fans have to have suffered to appreciate the glory of success. All others are suspected pretenders and are on probation for now. Thus, all those post-Esherickians are hereby issued a warning, it's all fine and good to jump on the bandwagon now, we enjoy the company...but we better see you still holding on tight if that wagon veers off course, catches flame and tumbles off a ravine.
