One ref was awful tonight (in particular, and even worse than the others). He called EVERYTHING against the Hoyas -- it was totally laughable.
If you were in attendance: It was the white ref with the huge baldspot working the base line on the South side of MSG (our offensive court in the second half).
This is the ref who:
(1) called the same play two different ways (contact on one in bounds play, foul on us; contact on second in bounds play, no foul on ND, out of bounds on us).
(2) called Roy with his last 2 fouls (his last one, for sure).
(3) called Jon with that foul on the baseline with about 2 minutes left during a scramble for a loose ball.
(4) called seemingly every out of bounds play in ND's favor.
There is more evidence...If I watch the game on DVR, I'm sure I could add some, but that would be too obsessive. I have to read everyone else's posts instead of just writing my own.
Officiating (mostly poor) was just a HUGE part of the game....and we still won!
Key observations from watching the game in person (A list of HoNYaSaxa-isms):
(1) When Jeff realizes and plays like he must take a game over, it is amazing the level of passion and technical skill that he puts forth. He is very special -- Anyone who questions whether he has the skill repertoire to play the one-on-one, run-and-gun, no-D NBA game need look no further than tonight.
(2) Notre Dame can shoot lights out. A performance like theirs tonight would beat all but 99.999% of other teams in the country. They are capable of doing serious damage in the tourney. Sweet 16 or Elite 8 are not out of the question. Wow, what would happen if they hadn't sent McAlarney packing?!
(3) That one ref...
(4) Pat Ewing Jr. has the heart and growing talent level to be a HUGE contributor for the rest of the NCAAs and next year....and a leader as well.
(5) After numerous trips, I'll never get over how tight the Garden packs fans in to those seats. It's a good thing I was surrounded by Hoyas.
(6) This is the first game in a long, long time where the game pace was too fast for Roy to play in the regular rotation.
(7) Jeremiah is our best perimeter defender -- moves his feet very, very well and uses his hands effectively to check the man and the ball. Everyone around me, for virtually the entire second half, was shocked every time Sapp came back into the game. He kept getting smoked by Jackson.
(8) The student section cheered their butts off, upstaging by a wide margin the Notre Dame students. Too bad their attempts at getting MSG-wide cheers of We Are Georgetown, Let's Go Hoyas, and Hoya Saxa couldn't get off the ground...The rest of the crowd needs to pay attention.
Let's make it a home atmosphere tomorrow night!
