they just take some horrible shots. the last 4 games, sapp is 8-33 from the field and a whopping 0-17 from 3. 0 for freaking 17. the fact that he takes as many or more shots than jeff, roy, and jon is ridiculous. summers is 11-46 his last 6 games and 5-27 from 3. these 2 have to realize they are options 4 and 5 on the floor.

I actually think Jessie and DaJuan played well in the first half. 2nd half... different story. Both have to make their FTs. Jon's not going to always be the one taking the FTs at the end of the game. DaJuan needs to give it 100% every second he's in the game. One particular play which drove me crazy was when Sumpter totally caught DaJuan off-guard and blew past him, forcing DaJuan to foul. I'm happy both showed improvement in the first half. Just need to channel it for a full game.

I have no problem if they have an uncontested shot or take it to the paint to force the action, but shooting early in the shot clock before letting Green or Roy touch it is just dumb.

When we are up, taking a 3 with 20 secs on the shot clock is a travesty. These 2 have to understand how to play with channeled, focused basketball IQ- not just unfocused energy and jacking up shots.

Ya i dont think the problem was the quality of shots they were taking (most were uncontested), but the time they were taking them at. Up by double digits, you should never take a long-range shot with 20+ seconds on the shot clock. Thats how you let an opponent get back into it. I'm sure JTIII will let them know that they can't keep doing that.

They could have gotten those 3s anytime they wanted. Taking them with 5 secs left would have been better than 25 secs left. Also, how about going inside-out for them? Roy and Jeff were effective down low....

I like to talk about our players as to whether or not they are clutch. In my opinion, we have 3.5 starters who have been or can be, clutch. We shouldn't have needed any clutch performances in this game, however, with the 25-point leads. BUT, we ended up needing clutch plays, free throws, blocked shots, and I'm glad some of our guys played as they did.
Oh, and Jeff almost played himself OFF of my clutch list with the foul on the 3-pointer. It was too reminiscent of the BoBo 4-point play a couple years ago.
Before I get bombarded with people saying the above paragraph is unnecessary, let me say that I OBVIOUSLY KNOW that Jeff is clutch, the best player on the team, best in the BE, and happy he's a 3rd-team AA. It's just that very play is not what you need in a game like that. Aggressiveness is great, but I prefer controlled aggression, where you block a shot cleanly & risk no foul (i.e. Jeff's block of Reynolds' layup, & Patrick's block of the late 3 attempt that he put about 5 rows deep!!!).

Agreed - Wallace, Green and Hibbert need to be the guys shooting the ball. Look at all of our losses this year and you'll see that when we deviate from that, we lose. Sure, Summers and Sapp have had some nice games this year and they are good players but we MUST live and die with Jeff, Roy and Jon. If we go down that way, I can live with it. If we go down with Ewing, Summers, Rivers and Sapp playing poorly, that is unacceptable. The coaches need to find a delicate balance between giving guys the green light/encouraging unselfishness and telling the second-tier guys to feed the horses.

Summers has made himself an easy cover--he only spots up for 3's right now--and he's at his best when being versatile. He's got to feed the post too--it sets up give and go too--feed to Roy/Jeff and cut to hole and you get a hoop--if you just stand and hoist--you make yourself a one dimensional, easy cover.
Sapp played perfect ball the First Half--he took at least 2 questionable shots in 2nd Half that ticked me off but some of his looks were good--and at least he pulled trigger. Missed good shots are fine--it's when ball doesn't move and we hoist I get ticked.

I'd be awfully surprised if neither Wright or Freeman unseats Jessie next year. He plays some good D and makes good backdoor passes, but his instincts on the fast break and outside shooting in general are TERRIBLE.
Not sure why Summers name is on this thread - his 3 late in the game at a time when everyone else was being tentative really took the air out of Nova's comeback.

I'm with you, Tri. Say Wright and/or Freeman enter a game and start scoring like S. Reynolds, but with less shots. That player will get the PT over Sapp and Rivers. We could eventually play more 3-guard offense.

summers is clutch as balls - don't forget what the kid has done for us all season long people. BUT i agree with RDF that the kid is a multi-dimensional talent and should not settle for spot-up 3s all day - tho i dont cringe when he takes them
jessie just needs to work on taking care of the ball - he has all the tools and just needs to play smart - he is a slasher though and has a nice touch on drives and that was SORELY lacking with this team earlier in the season - he creates that threat and that is invaluable. ALSO i think jessie played a VERY good defensive game in spurts and held reynolds largely in check...don't forget that
it comes down to our guards still not being entirely comfortable with breaking the press. Rivers plays hot potato, wallace is vulnerable going left and isnt the quickest, and jessie makes bad decisions too many times. we do need to attack the press b/c the easy baskets are there for the taking...
all that said, i cant fault this team for a shaky endgame after they way they played the first 12 minutes...that was beautiful to watch...just take CARE of the ball and we will be fine.

Sapp's shooting has been horrific lately. It's going to be a huge problem if he doesn't turn it around.
Summers was in the same boat, but at least he knocked down three treys today. Agreed that he needs to be more than a spot-up shooter, though.

They're scoring options 4 and 5? What team are you watching? Ewing (Mr Out-of-control, Probably Charging) is a higher option? Or is it one of the freshmen you'd rather have the ball? Or Rivers?
I think Summers is 2 and you can argue that with this ability to slash and penetrate, Sapp might be 3 over Wallace.
EDIT: Apparently, you're watching a team from 9 months ago. My mistake. Depending on what was going on last year, I probably agreed with you.
