How About ,
Hey...... GU Hey......GU Hey.......GU
H-O-Y-A-S and so on
Back in the day, the chearleaders had the Go GU... Go GU..... Go GU chant which was pretty tough and haven't heard it in a while.
But the you suck with HOYAS does not work. At the Marquette game, the guy behind me kept saying yah, I agree HOYAS suck. The eagles were only down 12 at the time !

Until we start saying things to the effect of wanting to have sexual intercourse with JJ Redick's 12-year old sister.. we won't be quite as classless as Twerp fans
this is really not that big a deal

This annoys me as an extremely unnecessary restriction of student conduct. This wasn't something that needed to be addressed and the micromanaging really bugs me. I was with a group of people when someone in the administration asked our opinion on the song in passing and if I had known what was at stake I would have been much more forceful in the vocalization of my opposition to this ban.
It makes me afraid of what comes next. As St. Pete mentioned Hey Baby is heteronormative. Really just frustrating.
(Oh and don't laugh, I heard that people in the administration objected to the kiss cam because it was heteronormative).

Personally I don't have much of a problem with the song itself. My main issue is the fact that these are all the words that are sung/yelled. Hey! You Suck! Hey! You Suck! HOYAS! If they didn't spell out H-O-Y-A-S at the end, the "you suck" wouldn't be nearly so dumb. But I'm not sure what You Suck Hoyas! is supposed to mean. This actually had me laughing out loud in the office. Well done THB.

Either nice sarcasm or someone really needs to get a better college experience. I don't find it offensive at all. It isn't too harsh. It doesn't hurt my feelings. It is just stupid. That's all. The crowd sounds like a collective idiot. It bothers me about as much as any unoriginal humor. Thanks, SFHoya, for saying it better than I did a few weeks ago.

I'd like to see "You Suck" go away, but I don't think "Hey... GU" would catch on. Part of the reason that people shout "You Suck" is that they're trying to go after the other team, be intimidating, add to the atmosphere of a college game. Whether it's effective or not is irrelevant to the people shouting it.
"Hey.... GU" would be way too tame - it doesn't have the "we're better than you" message that people like to send at a college basketball game. Something like "Hey.... OUR HOUSE!" would work better in my opinion (especially if used on a roadtrip).

I would agree that too big a deal is being made out of this and for athletics to step in seems a little overboard, but the fact of the matter is the song (with the fan chants) makes us look like poor sports who have the mentality of 6 year olds. I'm all for taking shots at another team if they are clever, but this just makes us look bad, and while I'll miss the song, I won't miss the chant. And anyone who thinks that this is an integral part of the game should try paying a little closer attention to the actual game.

Wow. I don't care one way or the other. Never really paid attention to the song. But 3 pages in just over 1.5 hrs is impressive!

I love yelling "You Suck!". That's the only noteworthy part of that song for me. Get off your high horse, it's a basketball game. I think it's ridiculous that the athletic dept. wouldn't let a band play it because of the fans using a relatively innocuous word like "suck". Also, did they just realize that fans yelled this?
Finally, it's over-dramatic to say that the fans who yell "you suck" have "ruined" anything for the other fans.

these games at the verizon center are feeling more and more like NBA games...and we all know how fun those are.
I don't like Jamie Foxx telling me to get on my feet and make some nows. I also don't like listening to hip hop on the loudspeakers during a tv time-out rather than letting the band play. Oh yeah, I absolutely HATE that new bulldog graphic that comes on everytime before the team comes out of the lockers.
THIS IS COLLEGE BASKETBALL!! Let the students cheer, let the band play! Reading some of your arguments against R&R gives me the impression that many of you would prefer the fans to sit quietly during the entire game and clap politely when our team scores a bucket. We're supposed to be trying to create a hostile environment for opposing teams to come into! So what if R&R isn't the coolest sounding cheer. As long as we can get the whole section chanting, yeling and pumped about the game, that's all that matters!
I'm tired of hearing opposing fans make fun of our home-court advantage, or lack there-of. Controlling what the students can and cannot cheer just puts us back one step further.

Hey This Sucks!
The band should be allowed to play it and we should be allowed to say it.
This is ridiculous. It's not offensive and it's fun. What's the Editeding problem. I don't understand how it sounds stupid. I can see how we add the H-O-Y-A-S at the end can sound a little silly but in general I think people need to get off their high horses when they say the students sound stupid chanting it.

If you think yelling you suck during a song during timeouts is increasing our homecourt advantage then keep on doing it.

I love my high horse. It keeps me above all of you peasants.
Your revolution is over. Condolences. The bums lost. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me?

If you think yelling you suck during a song during timeouts is increasing our homecourt advantage then keep on doing it. Listen, don't act like I'm stupid for yelling "You Suck". I don't think that increases the chances of the Hoyas winning. For that matter, I don't think turning off the lights for the starting lineup announcements increases our homecourt advantage. Neither does serving beer in the arena, or anything I do, really. Yelling "You Suck" during the Hey Song just amuses me, that's all. I enjoy it; just as I enjoy that they turn out the lights for the starting lineups and serve beer. I'd be upset if they stopped doing any of those things.

Perhaps its my public school upbringing, but y"ou suck" is just such a tame phrase that I'm impressed that we can keep it so calm. For those of you who argue that it is not part of the game, after the WVU game there was a man outside the Verizon Center with a trumpet who started playing it and the passing croud broke out into a loud "Hey, you suck, H-O-Y-A-S". I for one will rebel and be shouting you suck as loud as I can.

Controlling what the students can and cannot cheer just puts us back one step further. HoyaBliu, let me tell you from one band generation to another, things are LEAGUES better than they were in the early MCI days. Back then, the combination of a smaller band and smaller student section meant that the jumbtron dominated the games, and the band's playing time was considerably limited. From a ten year perspective, Athletics has opened up the game far more to the "student" elements and limited the jumbotron (also it helps when you play right through the ineffective moments). And I do think the department genuinely wants to encourage as much POSITIVE student enthusiasm, including, cheering, yelling, and singing. A hostile atmosphere can easily be created by the sheer noise, movement, and energy of the students.

First, has athletics made a final decision on whether or not the band can continue to play this song? Are they able to be persuaded if HB comes up with some viable options?
Second, I like the "Hey . . . G! U!" suggestions, but another idea would be to have every game's cheer sheet designate the name of a current two-syllable GU player and yell that name rather than "You Suck." Baer with me . . .
Hey! . . Jeff Green!
or
Hey! . . . Ew-ing!
or
Hey . . . Dizdarevic!

MY GOD PLEASE PLAY SHOUT.
The crowd participation would be crazy for the call and response parts and its a song everyone knows but is more uptempo than hey baby. I think it is at least worth a test run.
