Bilas just came out with an insider article on 8 teams that could crash the final four...they are:
Pitt Kansas OSU Oregon Texas A&M Marquette Air Force and
wait for it...
NOTRE DAME
Is he for real?!?! I mean seriously. He starts off by writing "The Irish are the unconventional choice for this level" gee Jay...YA THINK?!
Basically he says they shoot well from the outside. Man...and Bilas is usually pretty on his game but I just don't get this one

That's terrible...and 3 teams out his eight are from the BE to "crash" the Final Four. There's a backhanded compliment for the BE.

How could you call it "crashing" the Final Four if they make it? At least ND is an unconventional choice.

It's crashing because the other article on ESPN is basically locked into a UNC-Florida-UCLA-Wisconsin Final Four.

ND makes perfect sense... They
A. Lost their star player in an embarrasing situation that has drawn national attention
B. Biggest win is Louisville
C. Can't win on the road, and no Syracuse doesn't count
Final Four run indeed

ND has as much of a chance as Air Force.

Best part of that one is that Notre Dame is shooting a stellar 35.6% from three-point range in conference play. (4th in the league after Pitt at 43.3%, the Hoyas at 40.8%, and WVU at 37.8%).

Their offense is built primarily on outside shooting. When a team of shooters gets hot, sometimes they are the ones who can string together a few upsets in a row. Mason of last year was less athletic and less talented than this Notre Dame team, but they were hot. Remember the WVU team of two years ago? Also not a team full of great athletes, but they got hot from the outside for a few games straight and were a hair away from the Final 4.
Not saying I agree, but a team like Notre Dame potentially could get pretty hot and win a few straight in the tournament. Could.

How many teams get hot for two weekends? Mason didn't make the Final Four based entirely on hot shooting -- they actually had a strong defensive frontcourt and penetrating guards. I can't remember a team that really has -- West Virginia came close a few years ago (when they lost to Louisville).

I agree which is why the WVU offense is garbage to me and also why Villanova with the greatest lineup of guards ever assembled couldn't "crash" the final four shooting jumpers. Mason was not going 16-27 from three as you point out. They did their damage just playing good solid basketball and winning the close ones (getting to play two rounds essentially at home didn't hurt either). Jump shots do not win championships. Easy baskets and good defense win championships. So anybody looking to shoot to a title, well, good luck with that.

Granted the only time I saw ND was when we absolutely crushed them, but that team didn't even look like it could get to the NCAA Tourney, much less the Final Four. I still expect Brey to coach his team to the bubble by this time next month.

ND will lose at South Florida this weekend. Mark it down.
I love that we are so under the radar. A sweet 16 team from last year, 16-5, 6-2 in the BE. I love it.

I think taking care of the ball is the most important, but teams that can't shoot don't win championships either. And, unless you have a dominating front line or some guys who can create easy baskets for themselves and their teammates, jump shots matter. A lot. But, I agree jump shooting is becoming a lost art in the league. That's why I like WVU so much. Belien recruits shooters in a system that rewards them and guess what? Elite Eight and Sweet 16. If that's garbage, so be it, but it works.

Yeh, after the way USF played against Marquette, and ND's play on the road, I had a feeling this was coming. I guess beating Syracuse on the road will probably keep ND in the top 25, but we'll see.

Having Kurz hurt and not effective did not help them, in addition to the fact that with MacAlarney out they start a freshman at the point. ND got killed on the boards. They seem to have trouble with teams that have athletic big men, as their big men are not. Their soft BE schedule probably insures their ticket to the Dance, but I can't see them sniffing the final four.
