we all know who is in the final 5, so here's my top 5 all time hoyas 5. AI 4. reggie williams 3. sleepy floyd 2. alonzo mourning 1. patrick ewing Tough to ague with those picks. Now if someone were to create an all-time defender list, I'd start with Gene Smith, the toughest stopper in this or any other world. (Sorry for the crude hijack.)

I really like the way the final rankings are going. Predictable, but so very accurate to have Reggie, Sleepy and Patrick as the top 3 Hoyas of all-time. Those guys were truly awesome. Great job, DFW. I agree - Reggie is either number 2 or 3. I was there for both Reggie and Alonzo and Reggie's g-town career was better. Alonzo's game still hadn't fully developed. I love him, but reggie ranks higher. I didn't see sleepy play enough games to make a call b/t he and reggie.

All this love for DFW getting the top four in the right order is fine by me, but I need to register a complaint on how Eric Smith got rated behind Jonathan Smith, Art White, Perry McDonald, Brandon Bowman and Jerome Williams. I will not comment on other players that I never saw, but I saw all of these players and to me, there is no question which was the most valuable to Georgetown basketball.
If the evaluation is based on what they contributed over four years at the Hilltop and you weigh them each as a balance sheet and do not simply look at the overall offensive statistics, most of these are not that close in my opinion. In my book, Eric Smith is the number one under-rated Hoya of all time. A nearly pure plus player who knew his role, made few mistakes, defended brilliantly, and was better in the bigger games. Lastly, improved every year of a solid four year career that spanned Georgetown's breakthrough to the top.
Jerome has been a solid pro and a credit to Georgetown since he left, but was a two-year single dimensional player on teams that under-achieved. Jon Smith was explosive his first two years, but tailed off significantly by his senior year. Art White had a very promising sophomore year. Good Brandon outweighed bad Brandon, but the margin was sometimes close. Perry McDonald was a great over-achiever and is the closest call in my book.
Thanks to DFW for bringing back the memories, but I think his effort deserves a little debate and not just praise as he must get tired of nothing but that. Internet smiley deliberately omitted.

GP - I agree on the Brandon assessment - I would have put him much further down - and similar goes for braswell for that matter. I have a lot of bad memories of both of them. Perry McD was one of the great overachievers of all time and did a huge amount - incredible. I can't accurately comment on how Smith compares to him

Patrick is #1 but after reading this line...
..."in the end Ewing committed to Georgetown over UNC."
WOW! Ewing, Jordan,Perkins, and Worthy.?? YIKES!

The UNC flirtation was nothing, I truly believe he was a lock to Georgetown by his sophmore year at Rindge & Latin. Incidently the 26 year anniversary of that momentous moment in Hoya history is a week from monday night, February 16th, when Patrick commited to Georgetown at Satch Sanders restaurant in Bostons Back Bay.

GP you are so right. Outside of AI, Eric Smith was perhaps the finest athlete to ever play for the Hoyas. He subjugated his offensive talents to the likes of Duren, Shelton, Floyd and Jackson and was the most complete all round player that i have seen in 35 years of following Georgetown... He was perhaps the most gifted overall defender with the unique exception of Eugene Smith, but he could rebound , pass, score and do all the little dirty jobs, every single night, that get by-passed in the stat line.He always got the tough defensive assignment whether it be a hot shooting guard or a big wing or occasional power forward and he almost always delivered. He, more than anyone "officially closed Manly field house " Sleepy may have been the star of those 78-82 teams but Eric Smith was clearly the leader. IMHO he should be pushing the top 10. Clearly ahead of Bowman, Braswell, The cool man Jon Smith and Merlin Wilson , Martin and Tillmon. 2 years of Victor page and Jerome Williams. I put him right up with the other all time underated Hoya, Michael Jackson. That said, a great job on a difficult task. Thanks DFW.

Smitty was also the only Hoya who didn't freeze after Freddy threw the ball to Worthy. He hustled down court, fouled Worthy and at least gave us a last chance which to quote the Hoya had "good spin, on line, just short"

Have to agree re: Eric Smith, although I do not have the GP advantage of laying eyes on Jonathan Smith and Art White. There has not been a better Hoya 'glue guy' since him in my mind. Somehow his excellence is diminished, probably due to the brilliance of his teammates.

This post (and Dan's) summarizes my thoughts far more eloquently than I could have written. Smith's contributions were huge, just not the type that led to box score prominence. What a wonderful basketball player!
