While I'm all for accountability and believe the kid should have received some form of punishment, this seems a bit steep. I'm not looking to start rumors on the board but the punishment seems to suggest that perhaps there is more to the situation. If not, then there seems to be a sizeable disconnect betweent the "crime" and the punishment.

Thats a shame. Ill bet if he was underage drinking, something that can actually kill you, the punishment would've been severely less.

Sheffey seems like a parallel, but it was much less clear what occurred. As I recall, Sheffey was busted over the summer, did not play basketball first semester sophomore year, and then left school for second semester. He was never formally suspended from school, and there was the implication in fall 97 that he would be able to return if he got his act together. Pops was judge, jury, and executioner. McAlarney's punishment appears to come from a school judicial process that involved other administrators, and I don't know of many prep schools that would toss a kid for a first offense with pot, let alone colleges. Either ND is very tough or there is more to the story.

ND is very tough. Keep in mind that he was also caught with pot in his car. While the police didn't charge him with driving under the influence, the University isn't held to same burden of proof.
That's a lot more serious offense than just possession.

Hope it hurts them with recruiting! ;D Oh yeah, they were really getting the same quality recruits that we are. Macalarney's a good recruit - but he's not fit to hold Austin or Chris' jock.

The word "suspended" is a bit misleading. According to ND Nation, he was dismissed (once known as expelled) with the opportunity to reapply. Suspension suggests that he is only gone for a semester and is back in the fall. www.ndnation.com/index.php

So is he being kicked out because he has made the institution look bad or can schools today suspend/expell students based on criminal activities outside the realm of the school?
Clearly, he shouldn't be playing, but it's not as clear if this verdict is the result of McAlarney being an athlete who has special privledges and responsibilities or ND is really so strict that you're basically "always" on their campus.

Most student codes of conduct (including GU's) include a portion about school penalties for committing crimes, etc., no matter where they happen.
In terms of what schools "can" do, most private colleges retain a wide range of rights in terms of what is a "dismissable offense," and generally that category is left intentionally vague. I'd imagine public universities have a slightly tougher time suspending/expelling students.

I think a four game suspension would have been plenty and you could tell him the next time he is gone. Don't the domers believe in all that "He who cast the first stone" stuff???

A bit severe for just some Weed.
It's not like he had 3 pounds in his dorm and was selling it.
I wish him luck. A mistake like this shouldn't cost a kid his future.

Well, they'll need something to blame their season on (we all know they'll burn up), perhaps they simply love to have "We hold our kids to standards" debates every year

One of my high school friends who went to Notre Dame smoked morning and night in his ND dorm room. This suspension is unfair and inconsistent, when taking into account what non-athletes get away with.

If he was expelled as that NDNation article says, it is flat out absurd.
