Kentucky beat South Carolina (10-7) and lost to Vanderbilt...and they moved into the rankings why?

The coaches poll is truely worthless.

I haven't checked for the coaches, but that's last week's AP poll, even though SI.com claims it's been updated.

I believe we had 17 votes in the AP last week, and this week we received 28 in response to our two wins. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/rankingsindexAP - 28 votes, ranked #32 Coaches - 5 votes, ranked #40

In the ESPN poll, Vanderbilt (7 votes) has more votes than West Virginia, Connecticut, and the Hoyas (all three with 5 votes). That is a very questionable placement for them, though I do realize that they've had a successful couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how their season pans out.

ok i get that texas, tennessee, and Kentucky all dropped out so they should still be ahead and villinova and texas AM both had big weeks. but N. Iowa? explainto me how they jump from 2 votes to 46 based on their past two wins? and i'm not even going to touch the idiocy of the coaches poll.

Really, guys, who cares? The polls are completely meaningless right now. It was nice to be ranked in the preseason for all the accompanying hype that came with it. But now all that matters is that we're ranked at the end of the season. Anyone watching this team closely can see they are getting better with every game, and should be able to play with anyone in the country once conference and NCAA tourney time arrives...

Right on, Guru. Beat DePaul, beat Cincy, go to 15-5 (5-2) and then we'll talk. What matters is how well the team is playing and where we are ranked in the Big East standings. Subjective polls are crap. Pomeroy, Sagarin, et al are all that matter to determine relative strength and progress. As long as those numbers remain strong, the other polls will take care of themselves.

I find it a little humorous that so many people who don't care about the rankings found the time to read the thread and post that they didn't care...
I'm not surprised too much by the AP. Austin was correct in saying that I probably overestimated the volatility of the polls (I guess I was just going by how much the rankings usually drop us whenever we lose, silly me).
As for the coaches' poll: any poll that somehow has us behind Maryland (1-4 in the ACC!) and tied with UConn is pretty much completely worthless. Which is why I made sure to specifically put AP in the thread title yesterday.

I think the most important question is can we overtake VaTech as #1 in the Post's area poll?
PS: I love seeing GW low and not only behind us, but behind at least 13 teams we will play this year. What a hoot that "major" program is.

Just the polls - at this point in a season, the only "worth" they provide is fodder for discussions like this. Which, I guess, is their entire point.

Rockaway:
Thanks for your thoughtful analysis that produced an interesting thread and displayed how rational thought had no bearing on poll outcomes.
While polls don't tell you how could your team is anymore than US News rankings tell you how good your university is, they do serve as the short-hand answer for how the rest of the world thinks of Georgetown. They also get coverage and a line score in the morning newspaper if you live outside of DC. When my friends ask me how Georgetown is doing this year, it is a lot easier to say we are in the top 25 than to give them my 10 minute disquisition on how long it takes a team to jell and that computers think we are pretty good. Two more wins and maybe we get there.
