Odd that UNLV has 21 votes (3 more than hoyas) in coaches' poll yet has NO votes in ap poll.

Polls don't really matter and I'd rather us play hungry. That being said the AP is usually a better indicator since you have SOME writers who pay attention. The ESPN/Coach's Poll is the dumbest idea ever. In all seriousness no coach can possibly do a good job picking the Top 25. It violates the reality of the job. A coach by definition only pays attention to his school or teams in his conference/schedule.
At least writers might watch more games and have a better feel.
No worries. Vegas has us as having the 12th best odds to win the whole thing...that's the poll people should be focused on.

Don't try to figure out the coach's poll. It will just hurt the brain and frustrate you.
Just understand that most of the coaches vote (if they do the actual voting at all) based on reputation and raw win/loss totals. You'd be surprised how little they analyze the details.
If JTIII was a voter and he spent more than 3 minutes on it today instead of preparing for Nova we'd be furious. Same thing happens everywhere.

Coaches don't vote in the coaches poll. It is the least important part of their day. Someone in the basketball office fills the ballot out and sends it in. Its not really a coach's poll at all.

WHich is another reason to ignore it. So then it's a PR guy poll...nothing to pay attention to.
AP is better...

As a reminder, here are the coaches who vote:
Mike Adras, Northern Arizona Dana Altman, Creighton Tevester Anderson, Jackson State Ronnie Arrow, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Eddie Biedenbach, North Carolina-Asheville Jim Boeheim, Syracuse Matt Brady, Marist Rick Byrd, Belmont Charles Coles, Miami (Ohio) Dick Davey, Santa Clara Steve Fisher, San Diego State Pat Flannery, Bucknell Tim Floyd, Southern California Greg Graham, Boise State Tom Green, Fairleigh Dickinson Johnny Jones, North Texas Jim Larranga, George Mason Bob McKillop, Davidson Phil Martelli, Saint Joseph's Ronald "Fang" Mitchell, Coppin State Dan Monson, Minnesota Dave Odom, South Carolina Doc Sadler, Nebraska Joe Scott, Princeton Bob Thomason, Pacific Jimmy Tillette, Samford Perry Watson, Detroit Mercy Gary Williams, Maryland Doug Wojcik, Tulsa Ted Woodward, Maine Rich Zvosec, Missouri-Kansas City
This list dates from Jan. 1, 2007, so obviously someone has replaced Dan Monson, who quit. I'm just not sure whether the vote stays with his program, with him, or with somebody else.

Any poll where Gary Williams and Jim Boehiem get to vote probably won't give us must respect.

People are wrong on Boeheim- he will gladly rank Georgetown highly so that he looks better, win or lose.

I'm just not sure whether the vote stays with his program, with him, or with somebody else. Does this go on some sort of rotational schedule within the conferences, or is it just based on who bother's to return calls to USA Today? It's a silly poll no doubt, but I'm curious if there is any logic to it. Also, it's odd that coaches from major conferences make up such a small portion of the total voting population. I assume this is because only one coach from each conference gets a vote (6 of the 31 votes), but does it make much sense for 25 mid to non-major conferences to have as much say in determining the top teams as the coaches that actually are prepping to play them on a daily basis after January 1st? This is especially true when the major conference teams make up 21 of the top 25 spots like they do currently. Does football work the same way?

www.nytimes.com/2007/01/07/sports/ncaabasketball/07irish.html?em&ex=1168318800&en=60a87ab75493dcb5&ei=5087%0AThe Hoyas had just defeated No. 17 Notre Dame, 66-48, and Green was ready to board the team bus and head into the unseasonably balmy afternoon. But first, he listened to a quick lesson from the former Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., who is the father of the current coach, John Thompson III. “All that rankings stuff, that doesn’t mean a thing,” said Thompson, who coached the Hoyas to the 1984 N.C.A.A. title. “You guys will get there, but that ain’t nothing but dessert.”The elder Thompson, a Hall of Fame coach, was not trying to minimize the Hoyas’ victory against a ranked team. Rather, he wanted Green to realize that Georgetown’s early fall from the national polls was never a cause for concern.

the espn/usa today poll is a total joke and even espn knows it. they now show it on the right hand side while ap gets prominence on the left side. it used to be the other way around. they had more and better get better coaches on the voting list or else the legitimacy of that poll will fade away into oblivion.
