OOC: Winston Salem vs. Ferrum (DII)
BE: Pittsburgh vs. South Florida Cincinatti vs. Rutgers Marquette vs. Syracuse
Observations: -Marquette-Cuse loser will fall to 0-2 in the conference, so it's a pretty big game for both teams -Cincinatti is the only BE team not to have played a conference game yet this year

Indiana beats #24 Mich St. - good for a team earning a move into Top 25.

Watching the Cuse/Marquette game, neither team is hitting 50% of their free throws and its turnover city. No flow to the game. The Hoyas at this point would destroy either of these teams.

Yeah, the Warrior/Eagles and the Orange are also a combined 5-27 from three!

Yeah, the Warrior/Eagles and the Orange are also a combined 5-27 from three! MU can't figure out the zone inside either. The rest of the conference besides us has been pretty ugly this weekend.

WVU and Pitt didn't look too shabby.
By the way unlike with the Hoyas, the strength of the Golden Warriors is supposed to be their guard play. But teams are zoning them anyway. I guess their guards are only a true threat if they penetrate to the hoop or dish. What's the name of that draft site (not nbadraft.net) that claimed James was the best pro prospect in the Big East?

I watched most of the Cuse game. It was ugly for both teams and the wrong team pulled out the win (Cuse)

These early games only go to show that the rankings right now are meaningless. It is easy to go 13-2 or whatever in OOC play if you beat 13 teams like WSSU and lost to two top 5 teams and then get ranked. It is far harder to go 13-2 and pick up 2-3 wins that will help you get into the tournament.
A quick look at Marquette's resume shows a nice win against Duke but absolute stinkers against NDSU and Provy. Is that good enough to be ranked 15th? I don't think so, but it is also too early to tell.

You're right, those teams have looked good. Good observation on Marquette -- while watching the game I kept muttering to myself how much an extra year of eligibility for Novak would have helped the Warriors. The frosh from Venezula (name escapes me) had a couple nice looks from outside, but other than that I didn't see any deep threats.

The SU/Marquette game was one of the ugliest I have seen in awhile. Having SU win at the end only added to the sick feeling I had after watching it. I have no idea how Marquette is ranked......both teams looked wildly out of control taking bad shot after bad shot. Those are the types of teams we should be able to pick apart like a vulture on roadkill.

After seeing a few of these, if we are not the #1 or #2 seed in the big east, we had a bad season. Pitt is solid and after that, it is a crap shoot. UConn is getting exposed for what they are right now but we will play them after they have had a full season to get it together. Cuse will always be tough for us even though our strengths match-up well. Cincy, Johnnies, Ville, Rutgers??? The hall has had a couple nice wins and Depaul is so up & down you don't know what you'll get. WVU has looked good but they have all been at home for the most part. Hoyas need to strive for 13-3 in conference or better because our conference is down after the player losses of WVU, Nova, UConn.

Neither Marquette nor Syracuse are very good right now. MU fans had an over-inflated sense of self after they beat an overrated Duke team on a neutral floor in November. Meanwhile, they could have easily lost to Idaho State and Valparaiso, but narrowly escaped those before going down against NoDakState. With a brutal schedule upcoming, they could be buried in the conference race before it gets started.
Syracuse won last night only because they had a huge height advantage over MU and were able to just sit back in their zone and watch D James and others miss with regularity. The Orange missed a ton of close range shots, committed more unforced turnovers than I've seen from any team in years, and missed a bunch of FTs. But they still pulled off the road victory.
