With the BE season about to begin (UCon v WVU noted), I thought I'd look at the schedules of the 10 likely Big East contenders. For each school, I looked at the current KenPom rankings, and determine the strength of schedule by average, median, home average, road average.
For example:
G'town (Current Rank = 20): Ave. = 54, Median = 38, Home Games Only Ave. = 28, Road Only Ave. = 81
Some things to note:
- Pitt and Nova have the hardest BE schedules right now by average, while Nova, G'town and Cuse have the hardest by median (average of 8th and 9th toughest opponents).
- UCon, WVU and NDU have the 3 easiest schedules, so may be able to maintain their 1-3 rank.
- DePaul and Syracuse have relatively easy schedules by average, but difficult by median, indicating a few lousy teams (e.g. Rutgers, St. John's, USF) are skewing things.
- G'town has far and away the hardest home slate, but one of the easier road schedules this season. Assuming a home-court advantage, this could help much with the conference record. Conversely, this will probably hurt the RPI relative to some other BE teams.
- Villanova, Louisville and Pitt will have a lot of tough road games and their record will likely reflect this.
- For some teams (e.g. G'town), this is all of their remaining games, while others (UCon, Nova, WVU) have quality OOC games remaining.
For example:
G'town (Current Rank = 20): Ave. = 54, Median = 38, Home Games Only Ave. = 28, Road Only Ave. = 81
Team (Rk) | Ave. | Med. | Home Ave | Road Ave |
UCon (6) | 75 | 54 | 83 | 67 |
WVU (11) | 65 | 58 | 61 | 69 |
NDU (14) | 69 | 54 | 56 | 81 |
Nova (17) | 50 | 38 | 61 | 38 |
G'town (20) | 54 | 38 | 28 | 81 |
Pitt (27) | 50 | 40 | 58 | 41 |
DePaul (35) | 64 | 44 | 59 | 70 |
Marq (40) | 56 | 41 | 67 | 46 |
Cuse (47) | 61 | 38 | 40 | 82 |
L'ville (62) | 54 | 40 | 65 | 42 |
