I understand your point St. Pete, but at the end of the game how come no one is cheering for Tay like they do for Sead and Izzo?

I think that, even if it is about race in some way, it's a positive cheer, not mocking. It's like if the team were playing in front of a mostly Tasmanian audience, and the benchwarming Tasmanian finally got in the game at the end, of course they would cheer, and they would want to see him score - to be happy for him, not to mock him.

If it weren't about race, Spann would get the same reaction now and Brendon Gaughan (sp?) would have back when he played.

FL Hoya didn't metion it in his WSSU recap but the crowd was chanting for the coach to put Tay in at the 5 minute mark. Now that people are realizing Tay isn't going to be getting quality minutes he is starting to get the same treatment.

If it weren't about race, Spann would get the same reaction now and Brendon Gaughan (sp?) would have back when he played. I think Spann gets a different reaction because he hasn't been written off. People still wonder why he isn't playing, since he was a pretty solid recruit and was supposed to be in the mix for minutes this year. I think it was Jeff that said he was the best player in practice last year for awhile. Tay might be a victory cigar, but that wasn't necessarily the expectation for him coming into the year. Izzo and Sead are what we think they are--benchwarmers. Spann is more of an enigma, since he's supposed to a possible contributer.

I think that if our 12th or 13th guy were black, he'd be getting the same cheers as Sead and Izzo. If Tay were the last guy off the bench, we'd be going nuts for him. I see it as a positive thing, not mocking in any way, just appreciating our lesser-seen players and their role on the team, and hoping they can make a shot. I really think people are making too big a deal out of this.

Is there a conspiracy to blot Big Sky Shelton from the Hoya history books? First, he is initially omitted from the voting for greatest Hoyas and now this listing:
"Correct. from the soon-to-be added "Minutes" stats, here are the minutes per game for 1977-78:
J. Duren: 34.2 per game Martin: 31.6 Hopkins: 28.6 Jackson: 34.1 Dutch: 18.1 Riley: 14.6 Esherick: 12.9 Scates: 12.7 Yeoman: 7.8 Frazier: 5.2 Irwin: 3.0 L. Duren: 2.0"
Who played power forward on this team?
Seriously though, adding minutes played will be an awesome addition.
31.4. Sorry about that.--Admin

It's good to see the cool heads prevail in an argument where race is brought up. It may be race, and it may the victory cigar, but the truth is no one really knows and it's probably a combination of things. Among a crowd of thousands, different people probably have different motivations for cheering for the pine-riders. In addition, cheering is infectious...a few start then everyone else joins in just because those first people began the cheer (this is how HB cheering coordination works, no?). Once everyone has seen this for several games/seasons, it just becomes natural to cheer for Sead/Izzo, etc.....no matter the real reason. This lack of late-game cheering history for Tay is definitely part of why he doesn't get the spontaneous cheer as much (though from the posts it seems this is beginning). So in the end, it's definitely a combination of original motives combined with mob mentality and the force of habit. Either way, it's good to see that this board can get over the knee-jerk reactions involved whenever there is the faintest sniff of racism and actually have a vibrant, logical argument.
