There was a post on the Notre Dame board about an idea I've long wanted to see returned to Georgetown, the junior varsity team. (Georgetown had a freshman team from the early 1930's through 1972, renamed the JV team through 1981.) UNC is among the last Div. I schools, along with the service academies, to maintain a JV. At North Carolina, players join the JV with hopes of being called up as a walk-on the following season, usually one each year. Carolina plays an 10-12 game schedule, all at home, agaisnt D-III and prep school teams. Most of these kids will never make the varsity, of course, but the opportunity to wear the school colors and play competitive basketball is a tradition all its own. And who wouldn't have tried out if the opportunity presented itself at Georgetown? tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl-jv/unc-m-baskbl-jv-body.html

Freshman team games were great in the sixties - opponents included the best of the local high school teams so we could see all the great players we knew we would never get.

In earlier days freshmen were not allowed to play varsity ball so they had freshman teams. They usually played a game just prior to the varsity game.

I agree, there are many people at GU who could have played at d3 schools in hoops, obviously hoops wasnt important enough for them to go that route so why expend AD resources for another basketball team? students can set up their own games and travel if they like as a Club team, plus, there are walk ons and the practice squad players who fill holes on the varsity when needed.

My cousin actually use to be on the coaching staff of the JV team at Carolina in the 90's. They had some guys to get called up to the varsity squad. Clyde Lynn was one of them.
He was an OK player (My brother was better), but he does have a Final Four ring.

Was my cousin Paul on that team. He had played one year on our IM team, Stubby's Muscle Factory. We had a baseball player, a tennis player, and the kicker on the football team on our team. Even though I was just under six feet, I jumped center. Good days.
