i didn't hear any taunts about Gaines from the crowd. if they were done, it was by a few people. I'm absolutely fien with taunting another team and letting them know how bad they are. I loved the 1-12 cheers and the "Back to DII" cheers. stop with this crap about them feelign bad. As fans our job is to tourment the other team. If you start thinking of the other team as actual people you loose your focus. That's fair. Haha, I just felt bad because there was 0 chance of them winning and they had to have known it coming in. I guess I sounded a little more Editeded in that message than I actually was.

I figured Gaines was some local car dealer that sponsored the team so he got his name on the jersey. Just like CYO league.

lic, Earl the Pearl made the news here today because he had the previous Bullets (in Baltimore) franchise record for points prior to Arenas getting 60 last night.

Great game...yeah, yeah. That's a game we should have won exactly as we did. I'll be honest though, I was disappointed with some of the cheers. I don't want to sound like a jerk to the people who were doing these cheers but heckling them using their late coach's last name is pretty ridiculous. As is chanting "1 and 12". Believe me, they know they're bad. They know they're gonna lose this game. I'm all for cheering and being loud but these two in particular seem pretty classless. Seems to me that this is like when you go play pick-up basketball with some guys and the player who is clearly far and away the best player on the floor is an incredible jerk to a player who is awful by talking smack and just being an all-around jerk. I mean, I'm all for yelling at Cuse and UCONN and Pitt and teams that have a chance but I think there's a significant difference b/w them and WSSU. im glad somebody else has a problem with the "1 and 12" taunt. i have a problem with most negative cheers (if you can even call them cheers) in general, but this one is over the top. i mean give them a break, they are a bad team and reminding them isnt going to do anything besides somehow making us feel better about the fact that we have 3 losses already. great pick-up basketball example. i feel like the point of fans is to "cheer on your team"... not to demoralize the opponent. ill leave that for UMD-CP fans. i hate to say it but i think we could learn something from duke fans in this area. i yelled "put gaines in" a few times but me along with probably 95% of students had no idea who C.E. Gaines was. even now after knowing its still a silly idea to have his name on the back of all jerseys and just asking to be made fun of. just put a patch on the jersey somewhere. if they want to be seen as a legit D1 school theyve gotta at least be dressed like one.

I agree, demeaning cheers are cheap and taudry... Besides as the oldest of three brothers, I can tell you that giving a smiley, pat on the back, condescending "Great game, we really apprecitate you guys coming out and giving it your all" is always infinitely more painful, humiliating and damaging for the opposing team because it feeds their self-doubt and insecurities. Those forces are a subtle, yet stronger and powerful means to destroy a team's spirit than any of crude and direct insult which will only inspire indignation, wounded pride and other positive elements.

There was a very good article about a year or two ago where "Fang" Mitchell and Butch Beard remarked about how they have to repair their kids psyche(sp) for their MEAC schedule after playing such a murderous non-conference schedule. All of these schools, including the SWAC, play these types of schedules mostly for one reason...money...
