Historical examples...
- In 1999-2000, Kentucky started their season 4-4, then lost five more games throughout the season, but still managed a 5 seed in the tournament.
- The same year, St. John's lost to Samford in their season opener, and lost to DePaul in November, but snagged a 2 seed in the tournament when all was said and done.
- In 2003-04, Alabama lost 2 of their first 4 games (to Pitt and Providence) and also lost @ Xavier, but turned their season around to make the Elite 8
- In 2004-05, Arizona started the season 3-2 (with losses against UVa and Wake), but bounced back for a 3 seed and Elite Eight finish.

While I certainly wouldn't charaterize it as an overrated team, our '81-'82 squad really stumbled coming out of the gate. We opened the season in the Great Alsaka Shootout in late November, losing to SW Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette), before winning by only ten points over the powerhouse Alaska-Anchorage team, then promptly lost the next game to Ohio State.
In mid-January we lost three straight conference games, before eventually righting the ship. Only James Worthy and Michael Jordan, with an inadvertent assist from Freddie Brown, prevented us from winning it all that year. Oh, that we should be so fortunate this season....

Interesting stuff, True Hoya, but I wonder where those teams were ranked entering the season.
Also, I'd bet the list of teams rated preseason top 10 and then flaming out is much longer. It would be interesting to look at the makeup of those teams and wonder whether the early hype was due largely to returning players or because of touted incoming freshman. The example I remember best is Seton Hall in 2001, which went from the top ten to total disaster. But I think that hype focused on Eddie Griffin, who was a freshman if I'm not mistaken.

Sadly, I don't have the time for that kind of research, but I think this team is a far cry from the Eddie Griffin-"led" SHU Pirates.

Along those same kind of lines, almost every team has a bad stretch. The keys are how yo urespond to it. Last year the Gators did start 17-0, but against very inferior teams. We then went through a 5-6 stretch and the natives were restless to say the least. Obviously the team came together and responded well, but if the trials had spawned a bunch of guys trying to impress NBA scouts, then I doubt we even make it out of the first weekend of the dance.

Missouri...either last year or the year before... I think it might have been both...speaking of Missouri, has anyone checked out what they've been doing under Mike Anderson so far this season? Not too shabby... Back to the topic at hand, even if the Hoyas suffer three more "bad losses" and you throw in three or so "good" losses, we're still looking at a tourney team. November is not a panic month. If the team doesn't start to show improvement, I'll start panicking sometime in early January.

I watched Mizzou the other night against Arkansas......talk about effort!!! They are non-stop the whole game. Pressure defense reminiscent of the vintage Hoyas at times. Much different than the "Quin Snyder Days"!!
