I think it would be wise for the athletic department to print tickets for this event and make them available only to students for the first week and then any left over can be for alumni. I think we can expect over 2,000 students will want to attend and if there isn't an organized way to gain entrance to Midnight Madness there is going to be a lot of disappointed people not getting in.
This will be the best midnight madness Georgetown has ever had because:
1) We have the best exhibition dunker we have ever had (PE Jr.) 2) We have the best recruiting class (Jeff/Roy/Jon/Tyler) we have ever had (not just based on performance but also based on character) 3) We have the best student support in the history of the program 4) We have a top 10 team- and the best team team in the big east 5) HoyaBlue has continually exceeded expectations

I'd like to echo my comments about someone in McD looking into the possibility of:
1) Getting temporary stands like we had at the NIT game. 2) Getting Midnight Madness on MASN so people won't be absolutely shut out of the event.

"2) We have the best recruiting class (Jeff/Roy/Jon/Tyler) we have ever had (not just based on performance but also based on character) 3) We have the best student support in the history of the program"
I assume that these have the comment "...since we began having Midnight Madness" tacked on the back.
Otherwise, I think you're right. Tickets might be a very good idea. I'm not sure how many alumni normally attend, but I don't necessarily think you should be relegating them to second place. Again, the students on this board seem to forget that some of these alums are the program's meal ticket.
Getting it on MASN or even streamed on GUHoyas would be awesome.

Thanks SF. You saved me the task of pointing out a little class made up of Ewing, Martin, Jones, Dalton and of course Vadi.
For that matter, I would hazard to say that the Craig Shelton/John Duren class might have a dog in that race as would Sleepy, Smitty, Hancock, Spriggs, Bullis

it would also be a neat but probably impossible to have a live tv feed playing in a big tent right outside the gym. don't they do something liek that for big frshman thing at the begining of the year. Commencment or w/e?

Commencment or w/e? They definitely do have it for commencement ceremonies. That might be an interesting solution.

Alumni, while footing the bill, should always take second place. given the small confines of our high school gym set up, it should be students only at that event. For the wealthiest of those alumni, it would serve as a reminder that they need to dig deep and find some funds to build a real convocation center on campus. for most people it will just be another in a long line of, "wish i were in college again" moments.

I somewhat agree with this, especially in regards to Midnight Madness. However, just in general, the University is trying to project an image of family -- once you're in it, you're in it for life. Sports are one key way of keeping alumni in tough (and giving). So it is an important conduit. I do remember being in school and cannot ever remember thinking that students deserved half-court seats. And now that I know the financial situation of the program, I know that that is completely untenable.

Broadcasting the thing on MASN or projecting a feed to a wall outside McD would be nice touches; I do think the AD will be doing everything they can. I also know that it is a HUGELY good arguement for a New On-Campus CC. So I agree with a lot of people here.
Seriously, to be able to involve alums and students will always be an important part of the program. Has to be. Would be nice to find a way to do so here if possible.

I somewhat doubt that we'll be printing tickets for this event, as we never have before. Basically, if you want to get in, come EARLY. They'll also try to squeeze in as many people as possible for standing room only, as they have the past couple years. While probably against fire codes, you could probably fit more people behind one of the baskets in a mosh pit fashion than you could if there were bleachers set up there. While I'd personally like to see bleachers behind one of the hoops, I just don't think that's going to happen.
MASN, while it would be great, just doesn't seem reasonable at this point either.
There's no contingency we can develop that would avoid having to turn people away at this event, so the moral of the story is, COME EARLY. For alumni that are worried about students getting all the seats, if you come in before some of the students, you get in and they don't.
Hoya Blue will be meeting with the Athletic Department during this week to finalize plans. We should be getting an official announcement on GUHoyas.com sometime soon.

Approximately what time would you have to come to get in?

I sense that the program generally may be having some issues dealing with increased scale of demand. This is a HUGELY good problem to have; that said, it might be good to be open to creative and constructive suggestions on how to scale up a bit.
I believe everyone will work hard to make MM terrific. Early birds get the worm!

Personally, I'd probably limit Midnight Madness to students, play up the Hoop Club open practice as an alternative for the Alumni (that means sending out the date more than a week ahead of time), and go from there. Still, I'd imagine people getting turned away at the door won't look too bad to the recruits.

"3) We have the best student support in the history of the program" - It's unfair to compare it to the internet-less days of the 80's. It was huge back then. I would add "...in the last 15 years."

What a difference a year makes...Last year i casually showed up a few minutes before it started and got great seats...i have a feelin that wont happen this year. AD really should do its best to fit as many students (yes students should get priority) into McDonough, because I know that as a freshmen, Midnight Madness was what really got me hooked on Hoya basketball. Wouldn't want this years freshmen to miss out on that.

I wonder if you could get a live feed to the Tombs. Then you have beer and midnight madness. Let's start digging up the street and putting in the wires.
