Just when I had gotten a bunch of Orangeheads to root for us vs Yukon in the BET 2005, then they go and beat us in one of the most painful losses I can remember in our BET history. I say we maul the soul-less Orange this year by 40.

I think, as it's the offseason, this thread has some serious potential. My dislike of Southerncanada University and all things associated with it is through the roof. This weekend, I was playing in an office softball game, and one of the players on the other team was wearing a Syracuse hat. I hated him immediately. Never spoke a word to him, but I'm sure he was an a-hole....nothing he could have done or said would have swayed me anyway, so talking to him wouldn't have made a difference.
You can't spell s-u-c-k without SU

Simply put, I stopped taking advice from a close friend when she told me she was going to Syracuse.

Am I the only person who would have traded the Sweet 16 for beating Syracuse in the Big East on the way to winning the Conference last year? or has this already been discussed? this was discussed last year at tourny time and i know many people including myself who are in the same camp as you although i was surprised that so many people disagreed. 20 years from now we will be counting our big east titles and talking smack with cuse fans about how many times we have crushed them, the trip to the sweet 16 is always nice but is just another moderately successful post season run, it isnt a final four and wont merit much mention. I have to disagree with this, for two reasons. First, if we are fortunate, last season will be looked back upon as the season when the sun again began to rise in the Hoya firmament. Second, last season will be remembered more than any other Sweet 16 run to date, because only the Hoyas pushed the ultimate national champion to the limit, and were most likely one changed play from winning the game. That's a source of both pride and frustration.

My favorite GU / exCUSE moment (not game, obviously) was what I will now refer to as "the punch." Yes, that's right. I'm talking about the Wesley Wilson sucker punch to the gut that cost us a technical, and possibly the game. In a tight match, Wesley hated Syracuse so much that he put the game on the line just to jab a guy in the gut. Beautiful.

A woman who lives in my building is a Syracuse alum. Sometimes, our mailman is lazy and decides not to sort magazines - instead, they sit on a table near the mailboxes, and we have to sort through them ourselves. On more than one occasion, I have deposited her Syracuse Alumni magazine in the trash. True story.

Now if you're thinking of the same game I am (the one at the Carrier Dome in 2001), I always thought the ejection was for a Phantom "Bad Touch" of Tim Higgins...at least that's what I recall the announcers seeming to think it was for, and TIM-MEH!!!! reacting that way. But on the replay it's very clear a) Wes at best grazed him, and b) it was almost assuredly not intentional--more like turning around and accidentally grazing someone. In any case, I once wrote a song/jingle about that incident, to the tune of the "Canyonero" song from that one episode of "The Simpsons". Also notable about that game--Trenton Hillier scored in non-garbage time...breakaway layup IIRC.

Yes we're talking about the same game for sure! My memory could be failing me, or maybe it's wishful thinking, but I thought he got a good shot in. Oh well . . .

Where to begin? Manley Field House? Marty Headd and Andre Hawkins? Michael Jackson and Michael Graham? Sam Jefferson's foul, Brandon Bowman's big toe, G-Mac's last stand? Or Perry McDonald posting up on Rony Seikaly, Charles Smith going coast to coast, and Lee Scruggs' career game? Any way you look at it, a great rivalry, even though it's akin to the Cowboys-Eagles (Dallas fans don't like Philadelphia, but they will never hate the Eagles the way the Eagles hate the Cowboys.) Georgetown cost Syracuse at least four Big East titles in the 1980's, and they haven't forgotten it. (And bring back the Saltine Warrior.) Ronnie Thompson basically handing the ball off to Billy Owens (??) or Stevie Thompson (??) late in a Cap Center classic in '91 or '92.

Thanks, HoyaChris for that detailed account of the 87 BE title game. I had a tape of that game until a few years ago and used to play it regularly.
That and the 80 "Manley is officially closed" game are my fondest memories. If you ever need to shut a Syracuse fan up (and this may only work with the middle-aged ones) mention those two games.

I dunno, Drums -- any reason to hate Kelly Clarkson seems like a good reason to me. Same goes for 'Cuse.

Second, last season will be remembered more than any other Sweet 16 run to date, because only the Hoyas pushed the ultimate national champion to the limit, and were most likely one changed play from winning the game. That's a source of both pride and frustration. yes, being the first JTIII team in a long run of years in the ncaa's will merit mention, especially coming out of the dark ages, but if we won the BET it would have been our first title since 1989. If we go to the tourny 9 of the next 10 years and go to the 16 regularly and go to a final four, will this one be something to be so proud of, it will be discussed here as the begining but would you mention it in an argument with the fan of a rival? Would you instead mention a big east title that was our only title in an almost 20 year streatch as well as the first of several in our return to glory or more importantly a title that lets us say we have more titles than anyone in conference history? while current hoya fans will always remember that we were a bounce away from beating the champs this year, no one else will and it wont merit conversation for long. if you replace fla with SU, nova, Usuck, MD or Duke then it would be remembered since the history of those rivals will always be rehashed, but when you go to a bunch of 16's and some 4's you end up with a lot of close loses. while i think you may be right that this will be the most remembered 16 to date since by my calculations there have only been two others in the history of the program 2001 & 1995 both loses to the eventual champions. i will defer to the board elders if that is incorrect but i did a quick scan of hoya team records on www.hoyabasketball.com/records.htm to verify my assumption and didnt find any others then again i think you could argue that playing the hated MD under esh is more worth discussion due to playing a rival and also cause it delayed the eventual backlash against esh (no i dont want to start a debate on that, it has been done too many times) but that was a blowout. then again i was at that game so i will remember more about that i think...

I don't see Southercanada University making it as close as 10 pts this year. Without their heart in SacNamara, they won't be worth a damn.
My favorite moment (and the one that solidified my Hoya fandom)... 1994, USeless Air Arena. The Hoyas, badly needing a signature win on National TV, get a dominating performance from Othella Harrington- who owned SU, seemed to break out every game against them- and a gutsy performance from a one-handed Joey Brown to beat SU in front of an ESPN audience by 4. Students rush the court, we make the dance.

tgo, I know this has been debated before, and reasonable people can certainly differ. If you were to ask me if I would be willing to trade places with Syracuse last season, i.e., win the BE tournament and then lose in the first round of the Dance, my answer would be no. I can appreciate that you might feel differently.
