I went to McDonough this afternoon to check out Dematha vs. Paul VI in the pro city high school tournament final game. Dematha won 50-53 in a sloppy game that was not as close as the score indicates.
This was my first time seeing Dematha play and I can say they were impressive. You understand what certain opposing coaches are talking about when they say Dematha is like facing a college team.
Grant and Braswell down low are just devastating. After seeing Braswell play for the first time I was very impressed. He is better then I thought he would be. He has great size and quick hands and feet. He has good hands and showed some excellent interior passing awareness and execution. He sort of reminded me of a slightly less athletic Shawn Merion in his build and the way he moved around the floor. Outside shooting is not his strength but looks like it could develop to a serviceable level. Once he got the ball in the post though it was a different story. He pivots well and had a nice variety of takes to the basket finishing with confidence. If I had to guess I would say he had about 15 points or so with 8 boards.
This was my first time seeing Austin play and I can say he is as advertised. He is a totally unique and interesting player to watch. Most of the things written about Austin on the internet say how he scores quietly and naturally with a smooth and effortless style. That is absolutely true. I would say he scored around 20 points or so but he didn't force a single shot (I feel cliche writing that because its what everyone says about him, but there is no other way to describe him really). He played off the ball for most of the game and would sort of float around and come off screens to create space. He hit a few threes, a few mid-range turn arounds, and few lay ups. He has a scorers mentality and intuition that is hard to explain as he finds the right place at the right time. I would say he reminds of Raul for Real Madrid in that he just kind of hangs out and lets the play develop in front of him and then his only touch is a quick flip into the cup. The other interesting thing about Austin is how efficient he is (Another thing you read on the internet about him). He plays a very simple and straight forward style with excellent understanding of space and angles. His touch is excellent also. Austin is the kind of dude that would be good at darts, beer pong, ping pong, juggling, and just hitting stuff with rocks. He's a good ball-sport type of guy. The one citicism of his game I have is his defense. He definetly needs to work on intensity on defense as he look disinterested on that end.
There were a bunch of scouts there also. Marquette, NC State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Mike Brey from ND, and Niagara were the ones I spotted. John Thompson II was there as was Roy. They asked everyone to leave promptly as Roy was getting ready for what appeared to be an individual workout.
All in all it was great to see Austin and Braswell play. Braswell is a guy I really want us to get after seeing him here.
