Any of the undergrads out there involved at all with Hoya Blue or Gtown Day... Wilbon's words (see below) still ring true that we still haven't celebrated the 20th anniversary of the '84 teams championship... Is there any support for doing somethign at Gtown Day this year? Anyone have any other ideas? I would love to see the organizers of Georgetown Day set something up where Ewing, Reggie Williams, Big John and others were accepting some token from President Degioia on Copley Lawn.
From Michael Wilbon's column in WashPost: "Twenty years ago, Georgetown won the NCAA championship, and was in the middle of three trips to the Final Four in four years. Thompson changed the way the game was played, changed the way black coaches were perceived, changed in some circles the demands coaches put on their players. I don't recall that team being honored by the university this year, not publicly anyway. I cannot believe the powers-that-be at Georgetown forgot, or didn't think the accomplishment worthy of a public anniversary celebration. And if they still need a reminder of how difficult and how important it is for Georgetown basketball to be viable, firing Esherick on the first night of the NCAA tournament ought to be a jolting reminder."

I think we might be able to make it a part of the Welcome Celebration, no?

Could be party of a welcome celebration, but I think it is important to give these guys the honor they deserve... as well, the thread concerning the welcome celebration as gotten a little of topic.

IS there anyway to work with the athletic department at the opening game to do a half time where we honor that team of 20 years ago and welcome the new coach, I would think it would bring alums and current students in for the first game and hopefully keep them in.

Sounds like a great idea as long as we aren't playing some joke of a team like Norfolk State or Delaware State. It should be a pretty good opponent as well to make the whole event really exciting.

Maybe it should be the first big east game of the year.

Good idea, although by the first BE game, it might be 2005 (and past the 20 year mark). Maybe the Temple game, if we get that in in the fall?

technically, i think we need to do something this year if possible... we don't want it to seem like an afterthought - although, i think it will no matter what.

Maybe it should be the first big east game of the year. Agree with the concept except that one usually falls while students are still out on winter break.

Hoya Hoop Club President stated that the idea of honoring the 20th anniversary of Georgetown's national championship was brought to the administration and shot down as it was deemed to be too soon, and the adminstration felt that such a ceremony would be more appropriate at 25 years.

Not sure what the normal protocol on these things is, but I would much rather have us celebrate the 25th anniversary with a return to greatness under JT III...
note: "1979 NCAA CHAMPIONS REUNITED--The 20th anniversary celebration of the 1979 NCAA basketball championship included not only the players--including future NBA pros Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Greg Kelser and Jay Vincent--but also the 1979 MSU cheerleading squad, which also coincidentally won the national cheerleading championship. Introduced at halftime of the Michigan game, which MSU won 81-67, the cheerleaders received thunderous applause from the Breslin crowd when they performed their old routine with the MSU Fight Song, impromptu."
Looks like others have celebrated the 20th.

How were the Georgetown cheerleaders in 1984?

We should do a 20th anniv. celebration of the 1984 group- they were very foolish not to have done it this season.
We might even be able to work it into the welcome rally....

who is planning the welcome rally? i am willing to help if help is needed - i am sure we can find other alums that want to make this happen... do you think the university would be opposed if we get the ball rolling?
