Ken Pomeroy put out a neat post on his blog (www.kenpom.com/blog/) last Thursday showing mean rebounding rates for different listed heights.
It's an interesting graph. He correctly notes that it is biased a bit by role -- taller men play closer to the basket and thus get more boards -- and you can see this by the role shifts between 6'2" and 6'7" when the line gets really steep.
There's not much difference again until you get really tall -- 6'11"+.
Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to compare our players from last year to the height mean. Of course, it isn't perfect, as a player like Bowman is punished for being a tall 3, and having Roy Hibbert on his team, but, oh well...
Hibbert - 22% Dreb, 15.1% OReb.
Roy is the only 7'2" player listed, so I'll compare him to the average 7'.
7' - 18.1/9.9
Roy comes out as a well above average 7' on the boards.
Green - 17.4/8.5
Bowman - 16.3/6.4
6'9" - 16.5/9.3
Jeff and Brandon comes out as average or slightly above average defensive rebounders, but unsurprisingly, maybe, their O rebounding is weaker.
Ewing - 18.0/11.9
6'8" - 16.1/9.1
Ewing, as expected, well above average and nicely above Brandon and Jeff. Add in some of DJ's minutes, and our rebounding should improve.
Owens - 8.8/4.5
6'7" - 15.3/8.5
Sure, Owens played a lot of 2 and 3 with a good froncourt. But he rebounded equivalent to a 6'2" or 6'3" player. Uggh.
Egerson - 18.3/13.0
6'6" - 14.3/7.3
Anyone believe Marc is really 6'6"? No matter. The guy rebounds better than the average 7'. There is a small sample size caveat here.
Sapp - 11.0/4.3
6'3" - 10.1/3.7
I expected Jesse to have a bigger advantage, but average is fine by me once you see where our starting guards were.
Cook - 8.2/2.0
6'2" - 9.6/3.0
Afraid of fast breaks, were we? Despite some impressive crunchtime boards, Cook rebounded like he was 5'9".
Wallace - 7.1/2.9
6'1" - 8.9/2.7
A two rebound defensive gap is pretty bad. Below average, but when combined with Cook, we lost at least 4.5 rebounds here -- and the averages include people with Marc Egerson-esque minutes.
Aside from JW, we're losing three of our four subpar/average rebounders and replacing them with improvements in both areas (Ewing, Sapp). If DJ's replacement, whomever it may be, can be at least average, and Sapp's minutes go to an average rebounder, we'll be a very good rebounding team.
