Why did this take so long? The violations occured under Jarvis, who, as the article indicates, was fired in December 2003. If I recall correctly Keita went public with the fact he had been paid at the end of the 2003-04 season. If I were SJU I would have preferred to have gotten the punishment out of the way ASAP, rather than handicap Norm Roberts through the 2006-07 season.

The NCAA should award banners for vacated losses. GU now has the 2003 NIT final to go along with the 1996 Regional Final game against U-Mass. And I'm sure there were some games against Kentucky in the mid-to-late 1980s that you guys will tell me about.

The school needs to recommit itself to men's basketball and get assistant coaches who can get the big name NYC recruit or else they are in trouble for the long term.

I'm still hoping that the NCAA will discover that Jordan bet on the '82 title game, and also that Gary McClain's self-alleged cocaine use will get the '85 'Nova team DQ'd, upping our title count to 3!!

Where would we hang the banner for the vacated loss in the NIT final? Sorry, there was a rich opening there.

Just to clarify this a bit. The NCAA actually accepted SJU's self-imposed penalties. The NCAA ruled that it was sufficient, and the probation really doesn't mean much. The scholarship lost is for 06 and SJU has 5 very good recruits and a full class already coming in for 06. Norm Roberts will get that scholarship back for the 07 class meaning that he's in the clear now.
The main thing is that the NCAA cloud which has seemingly lasted forever is gone. Norm has done a great job grabbing some very nice talent that will take the court next season, and I still think you'll see an upward swing in SJU. SJU fans are very excited about this upcoming season where we only lose two bench players and return Lamont Hamilton, a healthy Darryl Hill hopefully, and a big compliment of new players including 3 highly rated guards which SJU needs more than anything.

As stated before, a strong St. John's is good for the Big East, particularly for the long term stability of the two I-AA and five I-AAA schools.
New York remains a major recruiting ground for most Big East schools, though Georgetown has been one of the few Big East schools not to draw a large number of recruits from NYC. Between St. John's, the new coaches at Rutgers and Seton Hall, the strong recruiting efforts from Villanova and UConn, and the rest of the New York area schools in the mix, it's a real battleground, but rebuilding the St. John's brand among high school prospects is the first step.
One more thing--bring back Redmen football. If Georgetown and Villanova can play, so can St. John's.
