Fred Brown (defined by a pass and a bear hug but a good ballplayer as well) Ashanti Cook Eric Smith (But not underrated by DFW in the history project!) Don Reid Othella Harrington (despite it all, too many fans hate on O)

Giga makes some good suggestions, but I would substitute Tay Spann for Ashanti. ;D

I think that you are dead on with Big Don. Can I get a shout out for Boubacar Aw??
I really want to be with you on Othella. I just think that expectations - well, and the height fabrication - doomed him from the beginning.

But the majority hasn't seen Tay play. To be considered you've got to at least play some.

From my time on the Hilltop 1999-2003, I'd say the underrated players were:
Demetrius Hunter (sick athlete, forgotten due to transfer) Nat Burton (one of the best role players I have ever seen) Wesley Wilson (for his 2001-2002 season, disappointing he never recreated that success)
I almost put Braswell on here, because he did lead the NCAA team in 2000-01, and he's the all-time steals leader, but he's remembered most on this board for chucking threes at the end of regulation. Looking at his FG%, however, perhaps it's appropriate he's remembered that way.
I think a lot of people came around on Ashanti this season, myself included, so I'm leaving him off my list.

Anyone from the 70s, I'm betting.
From my time on the Hilltop, Ya Ya. He was a better version of Victor Shomnick. For about the same amount of time.

Underated? By this board, I would vote for Derrick Jackson, who was the best Hoya player for 3 and one half seasons and left the school as the Hoyas' career scoring leader. Otherwise, I would bet that few would know that Mark Tillmon was first team Big East as a senior. Others of note - Boubacar Aw, Eric Smith, Steve Martin, Bill Lynn, Don Reid and Ya Ya Dia.

Good call on Derrick Jackson - I had to check him up on the basketball history project because he's a bit before my time and I hadn't seen him mentioned here before. He's a GU Hall of Famer and hails from the suburbs of Chicago - that means he's got to be awesome.
I'm just throwing names out there, but how about Jaren Jackson and Jerome Williams? JJ and JYD each had lengthy careers in the NBA - too obvious?

Fred Brown was a bad knee from being an truly oustanding player and having a chance to somewhat counterbalance "the pass" in his legacy.

My all-underrated is pretty much an all-overshadowed (notice a pattern with the first four?):
C- Slow-Thella F- JYD F- Don Reid F- Aw G- Freddy B.
Not much scoring at all with that line-up if you were actually putting together a team, but those are the five guys I think get overlooked the most considering their contributions.

There will never be a fair rating of all the things Eric Smith did for the Hoyas. From guarding the other team's best scorer to occasionally serving as apoint guard to everything in between, he was the glue for the '82 Hoyas. He also had the presence of mind to chase down James Worthy and foul him, making him at least shoot those two free throws and giving us one last chance (on line, just short) at winning.
That play typified the brains, hustle and overall value of Smitty.

If anything, Scruggs is overrated. The guy played two semesters in two years.
I think that a player like JYD is overrated as well because he had a reasonably successful pro career. Likewise, outside of this board and Georgetown fans, I bet Reggie Williams' college career is severely underrated because of his mediocre (disappointing?) pro career.

someone needs to define underrated here since it could mean a lot of different things. most people seem to be using the definition that someone is underated if they dont rank as high up on the hoya top 50 or get mentioned enough by posters when talking about the past as they should.
JYD is not overrated, he was a beast and was appreciated as such when he was a Hoya.
i also dont think demetrius hunter is forgotten, he is often mentioned in reference to what if discussions, his departure really hurt the program at a fragile time.

Boubacar was a four-year starter and one of the best defenders GU has ever seen, plus he emerged as a scorer his senior year. He's definately on this list (sorry, MCI!).

How in the world was Wes Wilson underrated? I mean, I'm sympathetic, and I liked the guy, but he was a total bust at Georgetown. Basically, he played one great game in his career - the quad OT game against ND that I vowed never to think about again. If there was an all-unfufilled potential Hoya team - Hell Yeah. Underrated? No way.
I think we'll see in short order that Ashanti was underrated for most of his career at Georgetown. Dude was just a step short of elite at guard, and a very good player. Personally, I don't think people really adequately appreciated Mike Sweetney when he was here. I know we sucked, but I think Mike was the best big man in college over the past 5 or so years - maybe throw Ike Diogu into the mix. Sweetney was unreal.
BTW, fun fact for newer folks is that we were Diogu's second choice. Imagine putting Ike and Sweets on the floor together. I don't care who your coach is - that team is going to win a lot of games. Fun fact number two is that we were TJ Ford's second choice too. Sort of a funny what-could-have-been. Over the long haul, I think things have turned out for the best since we now have the right coach for the team, but the line between being very, very good during those seasons and being very, very bad was the decision making processes (such as they are) of a couple of 17 year olds.
