And give them out to people in the first 10 rows all around the arena as well. I looked behind the Florida bench during a game this season and saw an elderly fellow wearing the same shirt as the students. Pretty cool. It's not just the first ten rows either--they give shirts out to pretty much the entire lower bowl at the "O-Dome" in Gainesville. Especially on ESPN game nights--they try to cover everyone that is within the normal camera panning range. And they vary the pattern, sometimes all one color, sometimes one side blue one side orange, sometimes it splits in the middle of a section. Looks very cool on TV. I've got several friends at UF who have been part of the "Rowdy Reptiles" and it's a pretty good atmosphere from what I hear and you get a lot of shirts (a lot of it is sponsors money and stuff). Of course, they get to sit all along the sides of the arena and not behind a basket too, which i would prefer, but that's another topic and I'm prob. in the minority anyhow. The reason the old folks all wear the shirts? Because if they don't, the entire student section yells at them and will not stop chanting "put it on!!" until they do. They've really gone after some people from what I've been told. Compare that to one of my 1st McDonough games my freshman year, when a single grumpy elderly fan would respond to the Hoya Blue section's "Let's Go Hoyas" chants with "Down in Front" b/c he didn't want us standing b/c it obscured his view. And for a while he actually got his way (until he moved his own self in the 2nd half). I personally would love to have a "We Are Georgetown" shirt, it would be freakin' awesome. I can't believe that we never chanted that in four years.

Working on the seating situation, FLHoya. I'm with you on this. Part of the problem is that not enough students have been coming to games to justify moving the well-heeled alums seated there. Basically we've averaged 200 students a game. Pathetic. And yes, that IS a challenge to the students to get season tix!
I like the idea of the shirts coming with student season tix, and maybe also having the alums wear them also. I think it would really connect.

I think the idea of a sponsor is a great one, espeically one G'Town related. I posted a few weeks ago about how U of Buffalo has completely turned their student support around and they pack their 7 or 8,000 seat arena all the time. One of the things the students have are shirts sponsored by Mighty Taco (think Taco Bell, but MUCH higher quality), and the fans are the "Mighty Maniacs" or something like that. The "Tombs Stones" or something from Weisey's or Booey's would be amazing. A few other ideas:
Front: "Georgetown S.W.A.T." Back: Number of whoever emerges as a shotblocker (Hibbert? Green? ANYONE???)
Front: "Hoya Paranoia: The Empire Strikes Back" (Shouldn't be any copyright or trademark issues if not sold for profit?)
Front: Picture of Jack. Back: "Jack Is Back"
And all the "What Rocks?" and "Hoya Saxa" shirts work well too.
I think the idea of tying things into student tickets and March Madness is a great one. Could we try to organize something where maybe Hoya Blue or another group re-introduces the students and even maybe alumni to some chants? I personally know the "We Are..." one from my father, but I guarantee most of the people who've graduated in the past 5 years or so (at least) have no idea what it is.

Yes, lots to get to work on.
Any readers of the Board- do you own a business that would consider being a sponsor of such an event? If so, drop me a line!

YB - While I don't own any business whatsoever and am a broke as a joke grad student, I will be in DC this summer for about 11 weeks working downtown. Any help I can provide, just ask.

For the Georgetown SWAT T-shirt, it might be nice to use a bit o' history:
Here's the players with 200 or more blocked shots:
1.493-Patrick Ewing (1981-85) 2.453-Alonzo Mourning (1988-92) 3.354-Dikembe Mutombo (1988-91) 4.255-Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje (1998-01) 5.201-Othella Harrington (1992-96)
and then maybe:
Jeff Green Cornelio Guibunda Roy Hibbert
By the way, the next five are:
6.152-Jahidi White (1994-98) 7.134-Mike Sweetney (2000-03) 8.122-Don Reid (1991-95) 9.119-Cheikh Dia (1993-97) 10.116-Tom Scates (1975-79) 11. 100-Courtland Freeman (1999-04)

Unclear on whether or not Courtland hit the 100 mark. He shows up as such in the "career records" section of DFW's georgetownbasketballhistory project, but his personal stats only show 86 career blocks. He started very strong this year, but faded in the blocks (and rebounds) column as the season went on. www.hoyabasketball.com

I just got very upset thinking about where Wesley Wilson could have/might have/should have? ended up on this particular list. I thought I should share that personal moment.

I think Darian Townes would've ended up there, too. But I also think that Jeff, Cornelio and Roy, if they all stay four years, have an excellent shot. But you know who else is lingering? Brandon Bowman has 51, although switching to SF again may lower his total.

Or it might actually lead to more blocks, since he'll have a considerable size advantage on opposing swingmen. I'm not sure how that shift usually works out, but I look forward to watching Brandon develop all aspects of his game.

YB- The blue-grey combinations for the T shirts would be terrific. Blue and White is too Dookey.
In any event keep the message simple. Less is more.

YB- The "We are Georgetown" shirts are simple and effective, much better than some other gimmicky idea. I know I'd try to have friends back in DC snag a couple for me.

How about "We Are Georgetown" on the front, and an AC/DC tribute on the back... "Back in Gray"

just "we are georgetown" in big letters on the front, and jack the bulldog growling ferociously on the back. keep it simple, guys, lets not outthink ourselves.
and personally, i prefer the dark blue over gray, but that's just me.

Just an update- we'll know early next week if JT3 can make it for a Friday welcome rally. In the meantime, please feel free to keep giving ideas and suggestions, they are great. If the event happens, it will be really special!

If the event happens, it will be really special! I think this has been mentioned, but it would be great if some folks in Athletics got out their Rolodexes and called up Hoya basketball alums to get them to the rally, if it indeed is going to occur on Friday. I am thinking of guys like 'Zo, Dwayne Bryant, et al.

But you know who else is lingering? Brandon Bowman has 51, although switching to SF again may lower his total. I'd actually guess (and I'm not nitpicking here, just offering a potential positive for next season) that if Bowman commits himself to improving his defensive game, he will block more shots if/when he moves back to the wing because he'll more often be defending players that are 2-4 inches shorter than him. He's a talented player but his game was not suited for a lot of Big East matchups last year. Unfortunately, he was one of our only "presences" in the paint. It's not a given--again, Bowman needs to make a commitment to defense--but if he is more comfortable on the wing, he should have a size/wingspan advantage in a lot of matchups next season that will serve him very well.
