Not only does the Post have their D-List columnist working the Minneapolis region (maybe they'll send Wilbon for the actual games?), but he actually takes the oh-so-fresh "Princeton Offense" angle in today's paper. Hasn't this been covered before, especially locally? Anyway, I stopped reading when he trotted out the already cliched description of our sets as "Princeton offense - on steroids." UGh. Sorry - just venting.

I actually like Wise in general. He was very good in the New York Times and he's basically Kornheiser's replacement.
Wilbon is taking the lazy route and sticking around locally...his call I'm sure. George Mason is a big story too.

1)It was a good column. Wise has written two columns for Gtown over the last three days so he deserves some credit for that.
2)He is not their D columnist. He is just behind Wilbo and Boswell. And considering Boz doesn't write too much about anything other than baseball and the Redskins, Wise might as well be the Post's #2 all around columnist.
3)Mike Wilbon already stated on the TK Show that he's going to Minneapolis. Kornheiser and David Aldridge thought that was a mistake. They felt the real story is in Washington with the George Mason team. Wilbon countered that he felt the biggest story was in Minnesota because the Florida-Gtown games could provide glimpses of the next great big men to play down the road in the NBA.

I actually thought it was a pretty good column, bringing in some Princeton and G'town NCAA moments, as well as some good quotes from Pops.
Hell, I've read a lot worse this week from a wide range of news outlets.

Well, he's behind Wilbon and Boswell, so best case he's their C-List guy. And I'd say he's lower on the totem pole than Sally Jenkins too. He's a decent writer - it's painful when he tries to be funny, though. And I guess I'm just sick of the Princeton offense angle, just as JT3 is. He bristled - well, as close as his laid back style will let him get to bristling, anyway - when Mike and Mike asked him about it again on ESPN Radio this week. There are other interesting things to write about the Hoyas. I can see a national columnist, or one from another city not familiar with the Hoyas style, doing it, but the local guy? Dig deeper.

He has us as 8th in his power ratings which you've got to like. Florida is 9th for what it is worth.

Those Post rankings are by Mark Schlabach, not Wise.

At least Wise (I believe) lives in the DC area, unlike Sally Jenkins. How can you write for a paper when you don't even live in that town. It's one thing for Tom Friedman to live in MD 'cause he's not writing about local NYC matters. But for a sports columnist not to live in the same town as their paper is odd.

She lives in New York and rarely writes. And when she does write its about New York teams, female athletes and some other stuff that most fans may not care about. She may have more prestige than Wise but she is far behind him in production.

I thought the column was a bit tired and only had life because Pops was quoted. Look, the Princeton offense angle has been beaten to death, and each article/column only has marginal utility from adding some new quote or take on it that the previous one did not have. Add that to the tired JT3/Pops thing, which only still has life because both men give a good interview and have something to say about the other. I'll nominate the PE1/PE2:JT2/JT3 angle for next year's award of most tired column.
That said, any press is good press, but, at this point in the season, give me that AL article about Wallace, the biannual article about Tyler Crawford, and something about Jeff Green or Roy's upbringing over those mentioned in the previous paragraph.

She may have more prestige than Wise but she is far behind him in production. Why does Sally Jenkins have more prestige than Wise? Oh right, because her dad is Dan. Sally, IMO, is the most overrated sports writer out there. She has never put out anything that comes close to her dad's classics like Saturday's America or Semi-Tough, yet it seems she gets work because of them. The only reason to buy a Sally Jenkins book is if Dan wrote the foreword. Admittedly I haven't read any of her newer books with Lance Armstrong, but that's because I read her columns for four years in college. As far as Wise goes, I've never seen him write anything negative about Georgetown and he seems to really like writing about the program when we do well. His column following the Duke game, for example, wasn't bad, and I'm pretty sure he's the only guy that wrote anything about the Hoyas during the Esherick NIT years.

Wise was at Verizon Center today for the open practice. At one point in between teams, he went to the ball rack and picked up a ball. It seemed that he thought that he could shoot hoops in between practices until someone informed him otherwise. I thought the article was good.

Wilbon was at the Metrodome today for press conferences and open practices as was Bob Ryan, Lenn Robbins, and George Smith from ESPN in case anyone was wondering.

I'm sorry but I thought this was the first article/column to boldly address race out in the open instead of indirectly when it comes to playing this style. That alone made it more interesting. Also Wise did us a favor by pointing out how college players can make themselves more attractive to NBA teams by learning the Princeton system. Now, all those articles bout the two JTs and those articles about Noah's vendetta? Those are tired.

I don't want to hear about Noah anymore. I hope we win, then let's hear him talk about it all he wants.

When Wise was with the NYTimes, he did a great piece about the time he was in High School (in Hawaii) and played a pick up game of hoops with Magic Johnson in '79. Johnson was in Hawaii for some r&r before the NBA Draft. Worth reading if you can find it--a 14 year old challenging Johnson to a game, and Johnson agreeing to it.
In terms of the really dumb columns that have been written in the last couple of weeks, Wise's take isn't that bad.

If that guys knows as much about the Hoyas as he does about the Nats then it's just as well he never pen a GU piece.
I'm an old Expos fan who "followed" the team to RFK and some of the stuff that Boswell was writing about the new Nats players last spring just blew my mind. I mean everyone knew for awhile the team was moving to Wsh but this guy didn't even care to watch them before they got there.
It smacked of not doing your homework and since that I have no time for Boswell or anything he writes.
