Well, that didn't take long . . . "Iowa State will announce Northern Iowa's Greg McDermott as its next men's basketball coach at a news conference later today, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com Tuesday morning." Link

Amazing. If I recall, the UNI fans on the chat over there were pretty confident that McDermott was going to be around for a while. Bummer for them.

Iowa State moved VERY quickly. They also had Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter in for an interview already. Jeter announced this morning he would stay at UWM--I don't know whether that was before or after he knew what ISU would do.
Makes you wonder if ISU wasn't just a little afraid that their primary cross-state rival might soon also be looking for a new coach. The UNI guy would clearly have been a candidate there.

I'm surprised we haven't heard about IU contacting Alford already, unless Iowa is making a big push to sweeten his deal and keep him.

On another coaching topic: I know that Rob burke interviewed up here with Siena last year before they hired McAffrey. There have been a number of rumors that Dunphy at penn will go to temple, and that McAffrey would then return to his alma mater. Today's paper sounds like Siena will be locking McAffrey up for awhile, I was a little worried that burke might leave the hoyas to come up here. Not that i don't wish promotion for our assistants - but not for at least a couple more years, when we have everything running full speed.

Also, I don't know if this got any attention last week, but Pete Gillen's name is being tossed around for a number of jobs, including possibly his alma mater of Fairfield.

Hard to figure why either school would be so eager to have Steve Alford as their coach. Sure, he is an IU legend and maybe still a big name among farm-boy ballers in the midwest, but he has done nothing at Iowa compared to even Tom Davis' accomplishments, and he has now had quite a bit of time there. On the scale of 80's white point guards who Dick Vitale loves, he has done better than Quin Snyder, but that is about it.
