This rant serves Boeheim to rally his team and use is it to create an us-against-the-world mentality for the rest of the games.
Do us a favor, Cuse, beat UCon tomorrow and meet us Friday so we can kick more Cuse butt. Let's do our part with MU.

I don't think many people actually realize how horribly inefficient a player "GMac" actually is.
Overrated is kind. I must say the unprovoked rant was great though.

"There's no question his weaknesses have finally been fully exposed this season, and somebody has to say what's long overdue: Gerry McNamara is overrated. A great player who dominates games? Not even close. All his highlight-reel heroics came while playing with actual great players who took up defenders and took away pressure - Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick. Now McNamara is the man, and he can't shoulder the burden. He and the team are having their worst seasons during his career." -Ethan Ramsey, /The Daily Orange/ Honestly, if you take out the snark, the ESPN studio crew said the EXACT SAME THING about McNamara tonight. So do a lot of commentators on TV and in print. When the clip came on TV this afternoon during the Gtown game, a lot of people in the chat room (including me) were like: "uh, okay, but he IS overrated". It's a pretty common thing really--guy loses his more talented running mates that took the attention away from him, everyone figures out he's not a world-beater. G-Mac's still good (though his game has limitations that teams CAN exploit) and means a great deal to his team--Boeheim's right about that--but I'd agree with the sentiment that he's overrated. Good for the Cuse student paper for having the balls to print an article/opinion piece about it (though I THOUGHT I heard it was a sort of point-counterpoint with a second positive piece, which would make it an even more pathetic thing to whine about).

Yeah, but without the background, Jimmy's rant seems like a coach sticking up for his guy, who just had a big game to put his team right in the middle of the bubble. And it definitely looks like a challenge to his team and especially gerry to live up to the hype, and go out there and believe they can win tomorrow.
If JTIII said the same thing about brandon after the hoya printed a similar article about how bowman under-performed all season and was a disappointment, we might see the discussion a little differently. it was definitely a strategic "fire 'em up and get us press" clip. If they weren't already, the selection committee will definitely be watching 'cuse tomorrow!

Totally different situations. Esh never "defended" Sweets - simply called out what he saw as poor treatment of the man on-court. Boe-whine was complaining about what a STUDENT NEWSPAPER wrote. Last time I checked, this was a free country and the press could write a player was overrated, college or not. Typical Boe-whine. I tend to agree with this. It is not apt to compare Boeheim's rant with Esherick's "I'll fly any BIG EAST ref down to Washington" rant. Rather, yesterday's Boeheim rant was more similar to the disgraceful rant Esherick went off on weeks before his dismissal, when he shamefully boasted: "You're talking about 30 years in a row of being invited to the postseason, and that's a pretty incredible streak that I don't think our school got credit for, that I don't think I got any credit for...If I'm evaluated as a college basketball coach and I'm evaluated as a professional coach, I think that 99 percent of the people that would evaluate me and understand what a college basketball coach is supposed to do and understand what I'm supposed to do here at Georgetown, 99 percent of those people would say, 'Craig has done a heck of a job over the last five years, and Georgetown is lucky to have him."As disgraceful--if not more so--as Boeheim's comments yesterday.

mcnamara has been overrated for 3 years. he is boeheims baby, so jimmy had to come to his defense. i think it speaks volumes of how overrated he actually is when the local paper writes it, especially in syracuse since they rarely do that to their players. i pray one of our assistants voted for ratnamara as most overrated.
i'm shocked he didn't throw a chair and storm out of the room like he did when we beat them in '84.

Guys & gals:
Make no mistake. This was not an Esh-style rant. Esh lost his temper and was fed up. Boeheim's rant was entirely calculated. I hate Syracuse, I hate McNamara and I hate Boeheim, but I think this was a pretty savvy move on his part.
This was completely contrived outrage, and my guess is that Boeheim is secretly thanking that student newspaper. His remarks were designed for one audience and one audience alone: the NCAA Selection Committee.
Syracuse is a bubble team, probably on the outside looking in, but it's possible they played their way in yesterday. Boeheim made this rant to remind the selection committee that he and his boy have been there the last three years and do they really want to have an NCAA tournament without All-America and former national champion Gerry McNamara?
It had the added benefit of making putting Syracuse into every single conversation yesterday.
Boeheim's no idiot. Well, he is an idiot, but he's not stupid. You know what I mean. He knows Syracuse has little or no chance to beat the Huskies. They may not get blown out of the gym for a third time, but they will not win. Boeheim took this moment to put his team, it's NCAA qualifications, and it's star player into the national spotlight before they get relegated to observer status the rest of the weekend.
This rant was lobbying for an NCAA bid, nothing more, nothing less. I think it was a smart move.
But it doesn't make me hate Magoo or the Rat PASTY BOY any less. [correction made to appease our esteemed HoyaChat play-by-play announcer].

I have no idea how you people are calling McNamara the rat.
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN BOEHEIM??? He's the biggest rat-looking mofo this side of Jorge Posada. Please... stop calling McNamara a rat when King Of All Rats is his coach (and apparently knight in shining armor).

Boeheim doesn't do things like this to fire anybody up -- GMac looked embarrassed and uncomfortable during the rant -- he does them because he is a whiny jerk.

Yeah, I can see why some would think it was a calculated move, whether to fire up the team or otherwise, but having seen the clip I just don't see it as calculated. He was bordering on the apoplectic, spewing out curses, etc. Maybe I am naive but I really think it was an off-the-cuff meltdown. Of course, I agee with everyone else that it was completely embarrassing and inappropriate in that forum.

My question - doesn't the Big East have to do something about Bucky dropping an f-bomb and following it up withthe BS whine? I know they don't suspend coaches, but some type of fine, or reprimand - or maybe force him to play a nonconference game on the ROAD next season??

For the second time in a week or so, I'm with TheWay.
It seems almost everyone on this board hates Boeheim (and Calhoun and McNamara and anyone else who has made our life miserable). McNamara has taken a lot of flack this year because Syracuse is not a very good team and he has had to carry more load than he's capable of carrying. And Jim stood up for Mac. Bravo.

I am certain Jimmy is crazy like a fox on this one, and his outrage was completely manufactured for the benefit of his team, but I do have to point out that this idea of "standing up for his guy" is absurd. Boeheim was standing up to a straw man of his own creation, answering a question that was never asked. I have yet to see a single source claim Syracuse would be better off without lil' Gerry, and yet the entire substance of the rant was to refute that non-existent assertion.

Can we never use the word disgraceful again on this board? You keep using that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means.

Not that I would ever hope for someone to get injured, but how perfect would it be if McNamara gets injured in the game against UCONN. Boeheim just told the selection committee that they wouldn't have won ten games with McNamara, no other justification would be needed to keep them out.

agree with easyed - I thought it was great to a coach go to bat for his player like that. You can say Boeheim's actions were "manufactured" or contrived to get his team motivated but the criticism has been real and Boeheim sure sounded genuine to me. Boeheim owes part of his national championship to McNamara - I would say he was just as important as Warrick to that team his freshman year. The motivation for his team may be a byproduct of the whole thing by I don't believe it was primary objective.
