As annoying and smirky as Gottleib is, he is right about the rankings. They are too slow to move teams in and out of the polls. Gerogetown should NOT be in the top 25 after losing to South Florida and closely following a three-game losing streak. If we win today, I believe we stay ranked. Otherwise, Marquette, among others will pass us by. What he's not right about is that we don't deserve to be ranked. If you aren't just looking at the last few games, systems like Pomeroy, Sagarin, Pythag and other objective non-RPI systems have us in the Top 25 (and higher than 23). So it isn't crazy. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Karl Ravech obviously HATES working with Gottlieb and had basically thrown in the towel.

It is uncanny the way Pomeroy's rankings line up with what I see with my eyes. This is the first year I have followed his rankings closely, and they just make sense. He has 7 Big East teams in the top 30- the first 6 will surprise no one, the 7th is ND, at no. 28, one slot AHEAD of Gonzaga. Yet another example of why I really want to be in Gonzaga's bracket. www.kenpom.com/rate.php

Most of it was before the Georgetown game.
Gottlieb would go off on a rant, calling Louisville a "dog"or mentioning that we have no business in the Top 25. Karl would call him on it -- a dog? or but who would you put in the Top 25?, practically mumbling it. The thief would shout at him, Ravech would sort of roll his eyes and give up and just move on.
Seems like Ravech has no time for someone who is like the Steven A Smith of college basketball but with no knowledge -- everyone else is horribly wrong. Teams don't have good or bad days -- they are great or dogs, etc.

Clear he'd much rather be down in spring training or calling a WBC game. That's always why I've hated that jerk, too. It's all or nothing with him: he either thinks you're nasty, and poised for a run at the tournament, or you're not worth anybody's time. Goes to his whole "maybe if I'm a bit of a prick, act tough and convincing, and convince myself I'm smarter than anyone else I'll keep this job" personality. He should be swimming with the fishes.

I believe I heard Digger say that nobody has done a better coaching job this year than JTIII. but it may have been phrased in a more narrow line of analysis. In Digger's voice you could sense that he expected big things from the Hoyas this post-season. On a side note, the trio of McDonogh, Bilas and Raftery is fantastic...combining all of the elements you want in a college bb broadcast.

I agree. That McDonough, Bilas and Raf combo is stellar. I really like Bilas except when he abuses the word "long"...
He knows his stuff and is rational. Raf is great...best in the business for my money. A real entertainer.
Plus, I know the guy so I'm not totally unbiased.

Gottlieb isn't bad on substance, he just doesn't have the on-air smoothness Ravech is used to on Baseball Tonight. He'd fit in better on Fox.
(And Ravech should get off his high horse -- didn't ESPN suspend him a couple of years ago for peeing out of a hotel window?)
McD-Bilas-Raftery are solid, especially considering that they have to sit there for 5-6 hours at a time and think of interesting things to say when Louisville is down by 37 in the first half.

Pythag? There's a ranking system called Pythag? LMAO Pomeroy runs two ratings systems. One is a mass margin of victory system -- using transitive scores but using massive amounts of them. The other is a pythagorean system, popularized by Bill James in baseball. A teams expected winning percentage can be expressed in terms of the squares of runs scored and runs allowed. Pomeroy adjusted points scored and allowed to account for competition and pace, then runs a similar calculation. We do well in that, as well. Course, it is mathetmatically related to margin of victory.

Gottleib is going to have to learn sooner or later that being sarcastic and negative about 90% of the teams discussed on the program will a) make you no friends, and b) make you look dumb. Like going on about "This isn't McNamara's last home game! They'll be playing in the NIT!" Or mentioning 1,843 times how we lost to South Florida. Really, Doug? I had forgotten. I think you're supposed to be promoting the BET, which is airing on your network, instead of dogging the #5 seed.
Also I was watching GameNight last week and Gottleib continually answered questions not directed at him and windbagged on and on. Eventually it was time to break for commercial, and Dave Revsine actually had to say, "Doug, Doug stop talking NOW" to get Gottleib to shut up.

He won't get asked back after this performance...miserable. I have lots of friends from various Big East schools...none like him and many are very vocal about his negative treatment of the league.

Digger ate crow. He's such a tool. Why ESPN even pays him is beyond me. Why he has any allegiance to ND is beyone me as we;;. They suck!

I would cut Digger a little slack on his allegiance to Notre Dame. He did coach there for 166 years.
