After checking out the Jordan Classic site and reading more about future Hoyas Vernon and DaJuan, I started getting more than a little excited. Add to that list newcomers Ewing, Jr. and Rivers, and I'm beginning to hyperventilate. Are you excited yet? Well, if not, think about our three-headed monster of returning starters, and then throw our developing bench into the mix. Excited now? If not, how about a little Davon to boot! OK, let's not get carried away. Take a deap breathe... if you don't need to by now, go check to see if you have a pulse, or get off this board, haha!
After thinking about our future, I can't help but think about the potential we have to achieve special things THIS season. I'm talking about the '05-'06 Hoyas, led my our trio of super seniors, followed by our trio of super sophomores. Along these lines, I have developed a Hoya mantra of sorts. Some of you may have been fortunate/unfortunate enough to hear me preach this in person. Others may have come across it in my sporadic posts. For those of you who dont' know what I'm talking about, here it is:
"It's just the beginning... You gotta believe!"
Did you hear that?
'IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING... YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!!!"
Well, I'm taking things one step further. When your aboard the non-stop express train to MEGAFANLAND, things must be taken to excess!
I must confess that in all my excitement and along the lines of the theme "It's just the beginning...", a tune some of you may be familiar with keeps popping into my head. Ever heard of an earworm? Well, of all tunes that exist, the one I can't get out of my head is:
"We've only just begun."
OK. I know this is a Carpenter's song, and I know it's kinda weird that a single heterosexual bachelor in his late 20's is associating this tune with basketball, but hey, lay off me! There's no logic or reason when it comes to MEGAFANLAND! Don't expec things to be make sense. Just shut up and enjoy the ride...
Well, back to my song. Here are the original lyrics:
"We've only just begun to live, White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we're on our way. And yes, We've just begun.
Before the rising sun we fly, So many roads to choose We start our walking and learn to run. And yes, We've just begun.
Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way, Talking it over just the two of us, Working together day to day Together.
And when the evening comes we smile, So much of life ahead We'll find a place where there's room to grow, And yes, We've just begun."
So here's my challenge to all of you. Let's see if we can pull a collective Nodak89 and Hoya-ify this tune. Then we can dedicate it to our three seniors, first and foremost, but also to the rest of the team, our incoming class, and last but not lesat, the coaching staff!
I know this is more than a little cheesy, but anything that accomplishes both thinking more about the Hoyas while avoiding actually getting any work done can't be all bad...
Here's my pathetic first stab at it:
We've only just begun to [play], Laced up in our blue and grey A pound for luck, we're on our way And yes, We've just begun.
Above the rising hoop we fly, So many roads to March We start with half-court sets and learn to run. And yes, We've just begun.
Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way, Talking it over just the three of us, Seniors, Working together day to day Together.
And when the [Spring] comes we smile, So much of the season remains We'll find a place where there's room to grow, And yes, We've just begun.
LET'S GO HOYAS!!! SERVE ST. JOHN'S!

I remember a less uplifting(?) group exercise, which resulted in this tune-- "Bye Bye Hoyas" A long, long time ago... I can still remember how The Hoyas made me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance That even I could coach them to the Dance And maybe they'd be happy for a while.
But every February I would shiver As Esh again failed to deliver Bad news in the paper Our season gone like vapor
I can't remember if I cried When I read about our starting five But something touched me deep inside The day the Hoyas died.
So...
Bye, Bye Hoyas Success Under Esherick we've seen nothing but our play regress Them good 'ole boys were drinking their own Kool-Aid Singing "this'll be the day we extend him... This'll be the day we extend him."
Did you make things such a mess? Do you feel that we should always press? If John Thompson tells you so... Why don't you believe in the pick and roll? Or any set plays going to the hole? Can you teach our kids anything but to be real slow?
I know that you're in love with the fist 'Cuz you call it after every shot we miss... Thank the Lord for the booze Without it, I'd be singing bluuuuues.. We can't play so we scrap and muck But it's not good, since we really suck But I knew I was out of luck The day the Hoyas died I started singing
(Chorus)
Now for five years, we've been put to the test Trying to live off our past success But that's not how it used to be. When Thompson played in titles three In front of crowds at full capacity And a cheer that came from you and me.
Oh, but while the coach was looking down The sixth Pirate scored from out of bounds The entire game aborted... No victory was recorded...
And when Calhoun and Boeheim's teams were best, The coach had tirades about the refs Everything thing was such a mess The day the Hoyas died We were singing
(Chorus)
Hoya Saxa, we need a new master, see As teams take off for the ACC We're in 11th place and falling fast... We struggle to make the BET Our team doesn't look like it can compete With the jester on the sidelines in a 'Stache...
The Half-time score is incomplete Our team looks like it learned hoops on the street We try to make the Dance, Oh, but never get the chance!
As the players tried to get a win St. John's gave it to them on the chin Do you recall AD Lang's sin The day the Hoyas died? We started singing...
(Chorus)
Then we were all on one board A fan base totally ignored With no time left to start again... So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack DeGioia sat on a candle-stick 'Cause firing is the fan's only friend.
And as I watched him coach my team My hands were clenched in fists so mean It's not like I want him dead But he's in waaaay over his head.
And as losses climbed high into the night to light a fan's will to fight I saw Lang laughing with delight The day the Hoyas died. He was singing...
(Chorus)
I met a fan who sang the blues And I asked him for some happy news But he just shrugged and turned away
I went down to the sacred store Where I'd seen the Hoyas years before But the man there said the Hoyas couldn't play
And in the stands the fans all screamed, The Hoya lovers cried and the students dreamed But not a word was spoken Their spirits all were broken And the three things I admire most Defense, Heart and plays in the post They all now reside in the Atlantic Coast The day my program died...
And they were singing...
Bye, bye to the Hoya Pride It's nothing but misery at the MCI And good ole boys can keep their jobs 'til they die Singing..."He's doing the job just fine...."
-Don McLean, Fan of the Game, Cam, Whoya, Aggypryd
-------- On another note, I'm happy to not know jack about the Carpenters. I think the train has already arrived in MEGAFANLAND.

Oh, how quickly we forget! That Hoya-ified rendition of "American Pie" was definitely a painful, yet poignant, memory that I had managed to sublimate until now.
Let's purge this with an uplifting, dare I say, romantic, rendition of "We've only just begun."

That is one impressive American Pie Remix... far better than Band Camp, by the by...
While I won't try to touch that first song, here's a little ditty I came up with after the Duke game.
Wrote a song about it. Wanna hear it? Here it go ...
The Devils Went Down at Georgetown (Remix) (Charlie Daniels had nothing to do with this ... I swear).
The Devils went down to Georgetown They were looking for a game to steal But they weren't in trouble 'Cause it was Georgetown on the bubble And No. 1 thought it no big deal.
When they came upon these young men playing basketball and shootin' it hot Coach K jumped up on a seat by the bench and said, "Boys let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it but we here are ballers too, And if you care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you. Now you play some pretty good hoops there boys But give the Devils their due I'll bet a spot in the Polls against your souls 'Cause I think we're better than you."
The boys said, "We are Georgetown And some might call it dumb But we'll take your bet, your gonna regret 'Cause we'll put an end to your run."
Hoyas you best bring your 'A' Game and push the ball up hard 'Cause hell's broke loose in Georgetown And the Devils deal the cards And if you win you get this spot in the AP Poll But if you lose the Devils get your souls.
So JJ limbered up his legs and he said, "I'll start this show." And fire flew from his fingertips But he messed up two free throws So he winced and growled and headed back down court As he made an evil hiss Then the Cameron Crazies all joined in Because Duke fans hate to miss.
With JJ dropping 41 the Hoyas said, "You're pretty good ol' son! But sit down in that chair right there And let us show you how it's done!"
Fire on the hardwood, run boys run Devil's in the house of John Thompson's Son Chicken's up at Wisey's, Madness on the go Duke felt old Jack's bite, Go, Hoyas, go!
The Devils bowed their heads Because they knew that they'd been beat, And they laid down that AP ranking On the ground at the Hoyas' feet JTIII said, "Devils, just come on back if you ever wanna try again. I done told you once, You sons-of-a-bitch, we're the best that's ever been!"
Fire on the hardwood, run boys run Devil's in the house of John Thompson's Son Chicken's up at Wisey's, Madness on the go Duke felt old Jack's bite, Go, Hoyas, go!

Wow.
I know Buffalo already said it, but...WOW!
Allow me to elaborate:
Where in the HELL did all of you, my fellow Hoyas, acquire this GOD-AWFUL taste in music?!?!?!?
Sorry, sorry, sorry. I'm still at work, ergo, extremely cranky.
(but wow)
I proffer the Foo Fighters, "Stacked Actors," altered to "Stacked Roster." I'll work on lyrics after I get about 12 hours sleep.

Hoya Love (For Your Love by The Yardbirds)
Hoya love. Hoya love. Hoya love. They give you everything and more, and that's for sure. Hoya love. They'll bring Hoya Blue right to the Final Four. Hoya love.
To thrill you every night, They'll give you teamwork tight. There'll be things that will excite, To make you dream of wins tonight.
Hoya love. Hoya love. Hoya love.
Ho Ya love, Ho Ya love, Jeff will soar far above. Ho Ya love, Ha Ya love, Jon will give you all he could.
Hoya love. Hoya love. Hoya love. DJ to the line, no more fouls to give. Hoya love. Bowman hits the floor 'fore I live. Hoya love.
They thrill with games so tight, Put that win in big blue lights. There'll be things that will excite, Championship dreams tonight.
Hoya love. Hoya love. Hoya love. Hoya love.
