Why didn't a GU player win for the Duke week? Sick of this honor roll nonsense.

With our offense, I wouldn't expect a GU player to win too often - we're not selfish enough. It'd probably be a bad sign - e.g. Jeff having to take over against Illini, 2nd half.

Why didn't a GU player win for the Duke week? Sick of this honor roll nonsense. Because nobody had a stellar enough performance against USF to warrant trumping Novak's excellent two-game effort: Novak averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and hit a game-winning basket in a 2-0 week. He also shot 59.4 percent from the floor and 60 percent from 3-point range. His basket with 1.1 seconds left gave MU a 67-65 victory over Notre Dame. He finished the contest with 28 points. Earlier in the week, Novak had 24 points in an 82-79 triumph at DePaul. In each game, the senior grabbed six rebounds and shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range.www.bigeast.org/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/012306aaa.html

The Big East awards committee, or however the heck they pick, also isn't going to be using pace-adjusted statistics.
Raw Poss/GM
Connecticut 73.2 Syracuse 72.0 Cincinnati 71.2 Providence 71.2
Marquette 69.7 Villanova 68.1 Louisville 67.6 Seton Hall 67.5 Pittsburgh 67.2 Notre Dame 66.3 USF 65.9 WVU 65.4 Rutgers 65.3
DePaul 64.9 SJU 64.7
Georgetown 61.5
Think anyone is grossing our players' stats up 5-15%?

i don't disagree with that either. But in a 16 team league awarding one or maybe two POW awards, you'd better have two very solid games to be in contention.

you had to know that Big Dog was going to come out in force to back up his homey Novak.

i think there's a misconception of my loyalties. my knowledge and close attention to Marquette hoops should not be interpreted to indicate some lingering support of that program. I would feel comfortable saying that there isn't a Gtown fan in the country who wants us to beat them more than I will on Feb. 16th.
that said, Novak deserved POW before anybody on the Hoyas last week.

Jeff is still warming up. Now that he is back in the national picture with his recent performnces, he will win it (maybe several times) before the end of the season.

I only saw the stats, but was Novak as bad as his line in the Pitt game? It seems like he disappears every once in a while...

i'm actually surprised he's shown up as much as he has this year. People were way down on him last season--ever since freshman year it seemed like he hadn't improved and could never create his own shot. he's been much better than expected this year starting especially with UConn, but he still disappears from time to time, like Saturday.

I hope we can shut him down. I can't believe I am writing this, but I hope he doesn't go Reddick on us.

BigDog and FormerHoya, Steve has a high ankle sprain, suffered in practice last Sunday. It has severely limited his movement and lift on his jumper in our last two games. Keeping him on the floor is still to our advantage, as usually the opponents best defender still has to guard him, but he hasn't been himself since ND. Here's hoping Steve, DJ, and Wesley all return to health before our matchup.

I'd have liked to see Jeff get Player of the Week one of these weeks, as a precursor to him really getting some all-conference honors at the end of the year. But really, it's just so hard to do that when the league is so enormous and when his stats are skewed by our slow-paced offense.
Hopefully he gets his due on the all-conference teams at the end of the season.
