We should remeber that every contributor on this team excluding Sapp/Egerson were Esh's recruits. Esh was not a good coach, but he was a good evaluator of talent. His last year as coach, when almost nobody seemed to be interested in coming to Georgetown - he brought in Green and Hibbert. (2 future NBA players). Not bad. Esh needed to get better X's and O's assistants, since that was his weakness.
I think he feels like he could have had the same success as JTIII - you need this type of confidence to be a coach in the Big East.
If I was a low D-I school looking for a coach or a major program looking for a top assistant I would hire him because he can find talented underrecruited players.

He did also take us to the sweet sixteen, which was one of the most exciting sporting weekends of my life. He's the Brandon Bowman of coaching: brilliant at times, but completely frustrating at others.

Jonathan Wallace was not an Esh recruit. We'd be lost without him.

whoa whoa whoa - take it easy - craig esherick was NEVER a brilliant coach. Never once did I say, while watching a game coached by him, "Wow Craig, BRILLIANT!"
but as for the recruits, i give him a wink and a smile. but say, thank God you arent here for another 30 years.

have you forgotten our Sweet 16 run, or were you not a fan at that time? Have you forgotten knocking off a ranked 'cuse in the BE tourney? He had some GREAT games, but unfortunately he had tons of horrible ones.

dude - yeah i was a senior at Georgetown during the Sweet 16 run. It was great - and NatB's layup was a great individual play. But I still never would label cEsh as brilliant. that's just me. But maybe b/c I caught every home game of his tenure live at MCI until the last year when i went to law school - i saw too much heartbreak and boneheaded strategy to ever, ever bestow esh with the brilliant moniker

Craig Esherick and brilliant should never be used in the same sentence, unless you are talking about his firing.

he is probably smiling because his alma mater, as well as a program he gave years of his life to, is thriving.

Craig Esherick gave us the 4-OT Notre Dame loss and for that he will be condemned to eternal damnation for all time in my mind.
No coach who allows Kevin Braswell to attempt, 5, FIVE!!!! game-winning/tying shots in one game will ever be considered "brilliant."

I'm sure that Craig is proud to have recruited most of the major contributers on this team. I bet he wonders what the case would have been had there not been some, um, issues with certain assistant coaches and players. Who knows? I think that most people would agree that 1) Craig could have done a better job at some things and 2) Craig got some pretty bad breaks during his tenure. After that, you get pretty heated debate that seems to go nowhere. I'm certainly not trying to start any of that at this happy time in Hoyaland.
As for game coaching ability, Craig was neither brilliant nor incompetent. For all of the games that Craig supposedly screwed up in (this board is often without a whole lot of analysis of actually HOW he allegedly screwed those games up-- something that I contest), there were certainly other games in which the team looked great under Craig. Our last win at ND prior to last night (March of 2001) comes to mind as just one example.
Look, we will never know how things would have turned out had Craig stayed. With the infusion of new talent of course we would have been better, but beyond that nothing is clear. One wonders what our recruiting classes would have looked like. Remember that current UCLA freshman Alfred Aboya had already committed after the disappointing 2004 season, which seems to go against the notion that no decent player would have ever wanted to attend Gtown after that disasterous campaign. There is no way to know if Craig would have had success with Macklin, Summers, and Freeman, or other players of similar caliber.
Before getting off the subject, allow me to suggest that insulting a former coach and integral part of the program for several decades following our current success is unnecessary and counterproductive.
Let's beat Cincy!

LET IT GO PEOPLE.
This isn't honest to goodness good home American schadenfruede, like watching Peyton Manning, Coach K or George Steinbrenner get what he deserves.
This is making fun of one of your own. I understood the frustration and dislike when he was running the program; I understood the relief when he was let go.
Now it is time to let go.

I think the inability and/ or unwillingness to let go of this topic speak to the deep divide and strong feelings that developed during Craig's tenure and after his termination. The fact that his name keeps coming up and sparking debate really brings home just how strong some of those feelings were at the time and remain so today.
There is nothing wrong with mentioning or discussing Craig, but there is no point in attacking him, especially if such is done without a hint of analysis or reason.
