You didn't answer my question. As for "thug," I'm not going to pretend I know every bad decision Vick has made, but intentionally trying to injure another player seems pretty bad to me. Not Rayful Edmonds bad, but are you going to argue over degree? Since I'm not the one you used the word "thug" I'm not going to pretend whether or I know intent or subconscious reasons for using it. But it seems like you came running to defend a guy who was kicked out of his school for a year, arrested for various crimes, flipped off his own fans and now it looks like he was trying to injure an opposing player. You came running over what is essentially a semantic argument. I don't remember you defending UVA's left tackle. I thought I was pretty clear... Yes...I'm defending him because he's black... But can you honestly say that the people that labeled Vick a thug ignored the color of his skin? He was arrested for giving alcohol to a 15 year old girl, and speeding & possession of Marajuana...come on, man...that's not the rap-sheet of a thug... I don't consider the white guy from UVa. a thug either. I don't particularly care for him...but I hate everything UVa....except Dawn Staley and Tammi Reiss...

I'm not in total disagreement. (Though I thought that it was more than giving alcohol...)
But I think words mean different things to different people. Almost no one actually uses a dictionary, and modern connotations vary widely.
When you hear thug, you think the person is using it because someone is black. Maybe the other person did; maybe they didn't. Maybe benefit of the doubt should be given.

I think when it comes to sports denoting someone as a thug in my mind means they are the type of person who would purposefully try and injure an opposing player. simple as that. Outside of sports it think it has different conotations but i think when applied to sports vick did the very thing that fits the definition.

I'm pretty sure Vick was initially charged with more than just serving alcohol, but the more serious charges were dropped.

Wasn't this about the WVU football game? Stop stealing my thread for a debate on racism in America. I know quite a few jokers who would kick somebody after a game at Yates so just chill.

Righteous anger should be saved for times when it is actually deserved or it loses all meaning.

I have no problem with sensitivity to the word "thug". I'm sure you've all heard it used way too many times during discussions of Iverson. Anytime I meet someone who finds out I'm a Hoya basketball/Iverson fan, they'll always throw out that word to describe him. When I ask what specifically makes Iverson a "thug", no one seems to be able to give a good description. I have to believe skin color plays a role in the use of that word.

You rarely hear white folks called thugs, but I think the debate about Vick is still semantics. The guy acts like an ass on the field and his university should be embarassed (of course, it's all about W's, L's, and $, so I doubt it).

Although he wasn't kicked off the team until after the bowl game, despite having been caught speeding and driving with a suspended license two weeks prior (VT had stated publicly in January 2005 that any future problems would result in automatic dismissal from the team). I'd say Marcus Vick and VT were appropriate bedfellows. Link to ESPN.com article
