Really great article. I love Barker's ultra-positive outlook.
I am extremely happy for Roy, that things are coming together for him. He is a great guy and he has earned this increase in publicity and the increased success he's had on the court. The sky is the limit for him, and if he keeps working hard, he's going to take the Hoyas a long way and have a very successful career at the next level. As I said in another thread the other day, I am very confidence that Roy is going to be an excellent, excellent representative of our basketball program and our university for a long time.

My new goal in life is to become, like Tyler Crawford, a "drill sergeant of desire".

In the case of Craig Shelton the increase in production solely reflected the fact that he was healthy and had no relationship to blossoming skill. Shelton missed most of his freshman season recovering from a horrific knee injury incurred at the end of his senior year in high school. He averaged 4.9 a game in limited minutes in the 7 games he got into at the end of the season. Even then he played with a noticeable limp. For all intents and purposes, the 14.1 per game he put up as a sophomore reflects the skill level that he entered school with.

Thanks for the notation on Craig Shelton, HoyaChris. I don't remember much about Shelton in 76-77 either, but I recall him having a great game in December of 77 in the Holiday Festival Tournament in the Garden against Holy Cross that seemed to be his coming out.

Barker Davis does such a consistantly magnificent job. Do you think Camille Powell even knows who Craig Shelton or Shernard Long are? I'd wager good money she doesn't have a clue and nor does she care.

Great article. Does anyone remember who the poster was that would continuously bash Roy while he was in HS? Ignatius was the poster who trashed Roy beyond belief. I mean I know that some kids are a bit overhyped, but nobody was saying Hibbert would be "next coming" just a good pickup. This guy said he'd be a "bust", "never play", etc.... and the way he talked, Roy's already surpassed his expectations. Goes back to one simple thing--you can't teach height and you can't judge big men when they are young--it's a position that doesn't develop as quickly because so few have experience being that tall and with Roy being so young, he's still growing into his frame.

I completely agree RDF - I think what makes Roy potentially a special player is his FT percentage - you can't really start hacking him and get away with it, conversely this means that he should theoretically have a sweet 15 foot jumper - although I'm not sure his post skills have progressed to the point where he can catch the ball in the high post pivot and shoot with a defender collapsing on him - I think that is the next facet of his game that he needs to add. I really like the baby hook - those Mikan drills are really paying off there - if that could eventually by combined with a fake and then a scoop shot or finger roll he would have 3 points everytime he caught the ball in the lane.

What a great article. The more press he gets, the better (as long as it's good and he's earned it) because it means we are one step closer to them having a "55" jersey available...

Loved the article. Always great to see somebody's hard work and dedication pay off, and Roy should be proud of how far he's come in such a short time. I remember the Big East Basketball Report saying earlier in the year if he could put up 10/7/2blks per game with additional minutes this year, he'd give us a huge boost. Well he's done even better than that, at 13.9/6.8/2.6. And even more importantly, like Jeff says in the article, he's taken the pressure off several others on the team to score. I hope he keeps improving so he one day can be mentioned with the greats.

Here's a trip back in time (or at least back to the archives). Here's an exchange between me and Ignatius on the old HoyaTalk board. Date is summer of 2001.
Good and bad news concerning Hibbert
Posted by MCIGuy on July 07, 2001 at 22:19:15
The good news concerning Roy Hibbert is that he played very well during his first day at the Nike Camp and stood out among the pack for the 2004 class. The bad news is that if he keeps playing like that we won't have to worry about whether he is truly coming to Gtown or not because he'll probably head straight to the pros. Come on, Roy! Try being a typical teenager and slack off occassionaly. To read about Mr. Hibbert's day and other happenings during day 1 of the Nike Camp please click on the link below. Nike Camp
(response) Have you seen Hibbert play?

I watched Georgetown Prep play 8 or 10 times last year.
Look for Hibbert in the Ivy League, not the Big East. The kid is very soft and the parents couldn't care less about Big Time college basketball. They did, afterall, send the kid to Prep and not DeMatha.
Nice player for Penn, Princeton or Harvard.

I have never seen him play. I have heard from folks that he plays soft at times. But everyone agrees he has the tools and the skills. Plus Prep Stars, Dave Teleps, Clint Jackson and other hoop gurus think the kid is going to be great and I respect their opinions. And the reason why the kid went to Gtown Prep was because Mutombo and John Thompson directed him to the school to be coached by one of their own, Dwayne Bryant. Some say the kid wants to transfer because of the lack of diversity at Prep and the lack of big time hoops (the program is stil developing). However Bryant and other menbers of the Georgetown Mafia have convinced Hibbert to stay put so far. Also its the consensus of most people that he is almost a lock to go to Georgetown. Even our old friend TTKeith of the Terps site had to console Maryland fans by telling them that the kid is most likely Georgetown bound. So if your comments that the parents really care about their son being educated then you'll probably going to have to accept the "disappointing" fact that the kid is heading eventually to GU. Poor us.
(response) "Most people" haven't seen him play

nor have they talked to the parents. I have.
Transferring from Prep because of the lack of diversity is a complete and utter falsehood. The kid is super-happy in this environment and selected it for the very reason that it is a cloistered environment away from the pressures of big time basketball.
If you are getting all your information from the people who write "rags" and talk about basketball incessantly, you're way off base. Quite frankly, either you or they are making this stuff up.
This isn't your typical basketball oriented family. And I'm a Prep insider.
(further response) Actually what's going on

Actually what's going on is that a bunch of guys who make a meager living out of trying to look like they are "in the know" are projecting their own values and interests on to the Hibberts.
But their guesses -- based entirely on rumors and wishful thinking -- aren't any worse than your statements that Hibbert is a lock for Georgetown or that he is considering transferring because he or the parent's are concerned about the lack of diversity at Prep. We are years away from the first projection and the second is absolutely untrue.
The parent's chose Prep because it is the antithesis of basketball factories like DeMatha.
I never said I was a friend of the Hibbert's. I am, however, as close to an expert on Prep and Prep athletics as there is.
I'll stick with my projection based on actual observation and discussion with people -- coaches and parents -- at Prep. I see Hibbert in the Ivy League.
That was the first debate between me and Ignatius. Looking back on it its interesting to see how both of us had some shaky information or at least expectations (Roy going pro from high school--ha, ha. Silly me). As time went on Ignatius' comments concerning Roy became more vicious. He would attack him viciously as a player for the next two years without giving Roy a break because of his age and the operations he had on his feet. As Roy started to put up dominant numbers midway through his junior season, Ignatious got more quiet but still kept his stance. Roy had a great senior season but Ignatious would only bring up his few bad outings such as his showing against the STACKED Oak Hill team of 2003-2004. Personally I thought it was over the top criticism of a kid. But at least Roy's committing to GU buy his soph season convinced Ignatious that Roy (with his family's blessing) was indeed coming to Gtown.

MCIGuy: Where did you find that exchange? I assume you saved it back in the day. Also, I have to wonder why Ignatius was so vicious to Roy if he was a 'friend of the family.' Some friend. In any case, this is all good fun. Roy is such a nice guy and I'm pumped he's having success.
