Anyone watching this? Duke only up by 1 at the half- 41-40. Although Duke will probably open things up in the 2nd half, it just shows that anyone can stay with anyone early in the season- or that Duke is WAAYYYY overrated. The funniest part about watching the first half was the absense of Duke Vitale's commentary. He was literally speechless!

Not totally speechless. He did talk about how great a pro Reddick will make if he can play with a good big man. The EXACT same thing he said about Trajan Langdon.

I don't think Duke is "WAAAAY" overrated. They're definitely a top 10 team - they have a lot of talent but they are still a group of 18-22 year olds that can have an off half. The difference between this game and the JMU game is that:
1) Its on TV
2) I bet the Duke fans, after they win this game, won't think the season is over because they were able to take a lesser school's best shot.

St. Pete, you took the words out of my mouth. It's 74-68 with a minute to go and you know Duke fans are saying "everyone gets up for us, that's why it's always tough."
Meanwhile, we go on the road and win by 7 in a team's home opener and our "defense is suspect" and "we're not clicking."

Like I said in my post, I believe that anyone can beat anyone early in the season, precisely because no one is really playing on all cylenders at the beginning- not even Duke. However, Duke doesn't have Vanderbilt, Oregon, and Illinois up next on their schedule. I'm confident in our team and the outlook for this season, but we're going to have to play a hell of a lot better than we played in the first two games if we are going to take any of the next 3. Look for Bowman and Green to step it up on Saturday.

Geez, so negative, you must have spent a lot of time trying to get through the traffic at 8A.
Its a group of 18-22 year old players, they aren't getting paid for this directly, and they know that they are playing an RPI 200+ team that went 6-22 last year - I can see why Bowman and Green weren't up for the game. We can easily go 2-1 in this stretch, we are that good. Look at the positives from the last game - it gets us ready for playing in bigger road contests at Oregon and Illinois, we know that Darryl hasn't lost his shot, Roy was sensational, and Ashanti got into the game. Bowman and Green will be there - we know that they can play - I was more impressed that the other 4 scorers we are relying on could score 70 points - that wouldn't happen last year. Its also not like we have a coach that is going to put up with mediocore performances from his stars.

Agreed on your last point St. Pete- I'm sure JTIII has been working them over the last 3 days- let's see them respond in a big way on Saturday- It'll make my drive home past exit 8A (it's not as bad going north St. Pete) in New Jersey that much better on Monday morning. I just don't think people realize how important these next 3 games are to our tournament aspirations. This is our chance to build that resume for the committee. As long as we step it up, we'll be in good shape. Just like Duke tonight, we've withstood a "test". Now, I want to see what our offense is really going to look like and what we are made of.

Meanwhile, we go on the road and win by 7 in a team's home opener and our "defense is suspect" and "we're not clicking." Well, if Duke fans aren't thinking it, Dick Vitale was happy to say it seventy-five times. I personally liked what BU did with Duke in their first half, using a very deliberate and smart offensive set to get some easy layups. That gives us a better chance I think against Duke--a more physical, deliberate, smart approachDrexel went more of the "low percentage shots and sugar-high" method, although props for the intensity on the glass. Just not enough of the tough shots falling late to keep it within reach. On GU fans v. pessimism: it's possible that both camps are right here. Personally, I happen to think that we have several impressive NEW things going on for the team (Roy's development of his skill set even taking away the actual points, a nice looking press, italics on a Kurt shirt)...and at the same time, we happen to play suspect defense at times and occassionally seem to not be clicking. Good way to find out though--I'll take being more brutally honest about our opinions of the team after these two road testers leading into a tough three-team parlay of BCS conference teams over being 8-0/10-1 and clueless like some of of the later Esherick years. Finally, we will win with an impressive performance precisely b/c StPete will not be there. Apparently, he feels that attending what is annually the biggest sporting event/rivalry in his midwestern state, with huge implications for his family, and actually spending time with his family on arguably the most family-oriented of the holidays takes precedence over sitting on the floor of the MCI Center near a bunch of strung-out and sleepless Hoya Blue fans at like 11:30am waiting for the grate to come up. Yeah, well I hope when you read the recap of how glorious Kurt's sausage McMuffin sandwich smells on three hours of sleep, you'll think better of it next time!

And he's been doing this for Redick since at least last season. He is desperately trying to sell JJ as being a pro. Did that with Battier too when he kept insisting that Shane should be the # 1 pick of the draft.

Difference is JJ and Sheldon have at least demonstrated they would show senior leadership. I'm waiting on the Hoyas' best senior, Bowman, to do the same.

Anyone that has followed Duke knows that they have problems with teams with great guards...
Even in their best seasons, they've struggled with teams that have had so-so frontcourts and great back-courts...St. John's in '99 & '00, Maryland, Carolina and even a very regular Georgetown team about 3 years ago...
Duke is not that good...the problem is, nobody else is either...
