I'm a grad student at Drexel, and I just got an email from the Drexel president to come out to the Preseason NIT game vs. Sam Houston St. Leads me to wonder: maybe it's just my poor memory, but I don't recall DeGioia ever having done that in my 4 years at school. Why not?

I believe varioius members of the team and III himself started this practice (covering the whole student body) last season? Maybe a current student could fill us in.

I don't think so, I don't remember that happening.
Only student season ticket holders normally get emails, and those are from the ticket office.
Once in a while a general email about something basketball related will go out to the student body, but not nearly enough.
I wish DeGioia would sent out a mass email to every undergraduate and graduate student encouraging them to attend the games. If it come from someone like the president who isnt directly involved with athletics I think you really get the feeling that its a big important event that people should go to.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Just getting that e-mail this morning made me want to attend the Drexel game on Thurs. night, and I can't name a single player on their current team. And it probably took him 3 minutes to write it up. It's the little things that count.

My freshman year (00-01) we used to get emails from the players on the day of a game encouraging us to come out. By "we", I don't remember if it was every student on campus, or just student ticket holders.
The vast majority of the time, it was an email from Ruben (hey, he wrote good emails), but a lot of players made an appearance at one time or another.
That was the only year it happened, at least while I was a student. They should really bring that back.

I don't recall DeGioia ever having done that in my 4 years at school. Why not? There is no more important supporter to Georgetown basketball than Jack DeGioia. With all the money Georgetown has lost in basketball over the last few years, the flat or declining attendance, and the financial state of the University, a lesser man than DeGioia might have given up on the Big East altogether. Instead, he's right in the thick of it. That having been said, his is a very political job and there are a lot of competing interests for his attention. He's the CEO of a highly leveraged $700 million corporation that is fighting for its financial future, and blast e-mails are an understandably low priority.

I think it would mean more if it came from the players, or Bernard Muir, or maybe even an alumnus like Ewing, Mutumbo, etc.

While I agree that DeGioia has been a staunch supporter of our program as well as the Big East, I sincerely doubt a 10-second verbal request to one of his secretaries to pump out a paragraph-long e-mail with his name on it would seriously jeopardize his ability to attend to his higher-priority responsibilities.
And I also agree with all the posts that have suggested players, both past and present, ask the student body to come out and support them. The Hoya Hoop Club has already made significant strides towards being pro-active (I think I've gotten more e-mails from them in the past 2 weeks than I had in the past 4 years), and I'm amped to see Hoya Blue become more of a presence on campus too. I'd like to see DeGioia and Muir follow suit.

By no means does this suggest that GU admins should not do something like this, but as a comparison to Drexel, keep in mind, this is a game that they did not expect to host, so they really have to beat the drum to let people know there even is a game. Is it a TV game? They would really want to have a packed house, so maybe they might get another one in the future.
